Hips songs are littered with them. Gordie was a poet. The lyric before the one you cite is "In a Zippo lighter he sees the killer's face, or maybe someone standing in a killer's place." referencing the false testimony against the guy.

I think this is a serial killer thinking about the milgard case.. 20 years for nothing .. nothing new .. but im gonna actually do something.. the whole album is a concept, the reflections/thought of a serial killer.

So great you two chose this song, I love your channel. I live in the city Saskatoon where this tragic murder and then the subsequent devastating miscarriage of justice occurred. In the song they refer to the Paris of the Prairies which is Saskatoon as we have a river running through the city with a number of bridges (not quite Paris though with it’s 40 bridges). Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip were always willing to call out injustice, always urging Canadians to reflect and strive to create a greater nation. Just miss that brilliant man. RIP Gord 🇨🇦
I grew up in S'toon and... yeah... a former cop has said that they knew they were running in the wrong guy. Just wanted to close the case fast. So a guy goes to prison for life basically for being lightly sketchy in the wrong place and time, which is not any kind of crime... and the real killer was out there, committing more rapes and eventually another murder.
It was a terrible thing I use to mix up the stories of this song and 38 years old....but that being said Gord made sure to tell Canadian stories either the news wouldn't cover or simply were forgotten by most..

True story
My good friends rent a permanent campsite here in Alberta Canada. David Milgaard set up his trailer right next door to them for 3 summers. I spent quite a few nights camped there during that period. My friends ended up becoming very close with David, spending nights around a camp fire talking. I also had the privilege of spending some time with David. He was a gentleman who always greeted folks with a smile, and had no hate in his heart for the folks who did him wrong. Sadly, one evening while visiting the campsite with his daughter, he began feeling unwell and decided they should head back to town. While driving back to town he suffered some form of medical distress and passed away a short time later. He had a small tree in a pot at his campsite, and later on in the summer my friends planted it in the ground at the campsite. Every time I go there, that tree is still there and I think of him. Rest easy Dave.

I've seen The Hip at least 130 times since 1989 and was fortunate to be able to attend the final concert. Scratch the surface of any Hip song and find a story you can't believe you never knew.
Going to see them was the closest thing to true democracy I've ever seen. Bikers, soccer moms, bangers, losers, and posers all rocking out together with no one out of place, because if you were a fan you were part of a family that was equal parts historians, patriots and poets.

Hometown Kingston girl here and "The Hip" are our local heroes and one our National treasures. The Hip performed thier last concert here in Kingston and then Gord died of Brain cancer. Everyone set a hockey stick on thier front porch to honour him. Still makes me cry......
no...the hockey stick out the front door thing was for the Hombolt Broncos hockey team where half the team was killed in a bus crash in Saskchewan.

This song is based on a true story. I once heard David Milgard the guy in jail, refused a parole hearing 20 times because he would have to admit guilt, That's some serious integrity.

David Milgaard was from Winnipeg, Manitoba where I am from. Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta are the prairie provinces which is the bread basket of Canada. That is where the phrase Wheat Kings comes from. There is actually a hockey team called the Wheat Kings. The Tragically Hip or "The Hip" although never made it very big in the U.S. were beloved in Canada. Check out Cordelia, Twist my Arm, New Orleans is Sinking to name a few.
Another Canadian band to check out is Crown Lands. A lot of their songs deal with Aboriginal issues.
End of the road is a song about a stretch of road in British Columbia where a lot of Aboriginal women have gone missing or were murdered. White Buffalo and Mountain are also other excellent songs by them. Cheers

I think originally Wheat Kings is slang for the grain elevators in the prairies, which are quickly disappearing and replaced by big, ugly, modern concrete grain "terminals". Ugh. What a shame.
Crown Lands is such a cool fucking band name. And really has a meaning... name for Government owned/administrated land. More of such land should be granted to be made available for reserve land shortfalls. But I digress... I was actually kinda jealous when I heard the band name and I don't even have a band. So clever.

Lead singer Gord Downie was bestowed the Lakota name, Wicapi Omani, meaning The Man who Walks Amongst the Stars. He fought to bring attention to Reconciliation for Indigenous peoples of our country. Secret Path chronicled the life and death of Chanie Wenjack, a First Nations boy who fled a residential school in northern Ontario in 1966, only to die of hunger and cold exposure while trying to find his way home. He did much of this while dealing with aggressive brain cancer. Check out their Live last concert from Kingston, Ontario. He knew he was dying, and it was live-streamed Canada-wide. That concert was the night Cnanda collectively came together to hug, to sing, to reminisce, to CRY. RIP GORD DOWNIE I cry everytime I hear them still. Gord was a special man.
Not just live-streamed, it was broadcast live on every network. The CBC cut away from The Olympics to show it. Here in Kingston they set up a huge screen in Market Square and thousands of people came out to watch it together.

I met David Milgard's mom & sister they told the story of David and how he is innocent I signed the petition wished them luck. This was at Sunfest an outdoor concert in Gimli MB in the early 1990s

They wrote that song when Milgaard was in prison and 5 years before he was exonerated so they took a lot of risk with that song.
In the Canadian Prairies, wheat is king. And there is a hockey team, of course. So, in the song, a man's life seems so small to all that goes on around us. The Hip were a national treasure.
I remember the day that they walked into the same bar that I was in .....
they got there instruments and they put on a show that was truly amazing.....
I will never forget that day

What a great HIP song. Gord Downie was such a gifted songwriter/performer. By the way, Bob Dylan also wrote an incredible song called 'Hurricane'. It's based on the true story about Rubin "Hurricane" Carter (May 6, 1937 - April 20, 2014) who was an American-Canadian middleweight boxer, wrongfully convicted of murder and later released following a petition of habeas corpus after serving almost 20 years in prison. The Hurricane was also a 1999 American biographical sports-drama film directed and produced by Norman Jewison. The film starred Denzel Washington in the role of Rubin Carter. Dylan's 'Hurricane' is most certainly a timeless song worthy of reacting to.
Wheat Kings has always reminded me of Hurricane. Two amazing songs.

David milgaard, the man this song was written about, died two days ago at age 69, from pneumonia.
Gord Downie and the Hip are Canadian treasures.

Gord Downie was, without question, a special soul. If you can, you should watch the last concert that The Hip played. It was broadcast Live on TV all across Canada and was a very emotional event.

It's June, and the guy in this song, David Milgard, died this spring, age 70, so he had 30 years free as an adult, all over age 40.
David’s story is so sad. Love this song. The Hip were just fantastic. The Gord Downie Project is his true legacy. RIP Wicapi Omani ❤
One of the most convincing details of his innocence is that he could have been out in 8 years if he admitted to the crime he didn't commit. He stood by his innocence for 23 years. He just passed away a few days ago. RIP D.M.

David Milgaard passed away on Sunday, aged 69.
They never made it big in the States cause they sang about Canada and American's could not relate to what they were singing about but the Hip was cool with being Huge at home.
The case that abolished the death penalty in Canada was that of Wilber Coffin's execution.

Another thing about this song is it’s written after a true event. Look up David Milgaard and his story. I have lived in Winnipeg my entire life and this was very big. I have been lucky enough to see The Hip playing the bars. I was actually the only person on the dance floor having a blast while everyone booed because they were booked into a County Bar -Silverados- and were fired at first intermission lol. They were out back having a smoke and i was like, wtf no way man lmao. They then went to The Osborne Village and I took off there and got in, they played an amazing set in the basement. Seen them many times at bars, then Sunfest, all which were amazing. Their songs are very story driven and poetic.
So many Hip songs are littered with Canadian history. I remember when David was released. I cry every time I listen to this song. As a mom, knowing his own mother kept fighting for him. I can't imagine this happening to one of my sons
I heard this over and over on cassette tape in the 90's. I kept rewinding the beginning with the birds and the guitar starting. Just amazing .
RIP Gord Downie 😢 The Tragically Hip is closest thing to Canadian royalty. They took stories from around Canada and made awesome music. Gord Downie after learning about his brain cancer they did a farewell tour across Canada. The final show was televised Nationally. Everyone in Canada knows where they were when that concert played. After Gord devoted his remaining time to raise awareness for the first nations and Canada's dark secret of Residential schools which countless first nations children were taken from their homes and culture. Residential schools were mainly operated by different churches. The first nations kids were forced to cut their hair and forget their culture. Thousands of kids died at those schools and many more survivors that were abused in multiple ways.
Gord received one of the top honours from a first nations Chief. When Gord died the country was in mourning, our Prime Minister was in tears as he tried to do his press conference.
Rest in peace legend....we miss ya. 🙏🇨🇦
Thanks for this post (and this reaction!) I grew up on a farm outside Saskatoon. I think it was when I was young, I remember seeing on the news about him being set free. It was a huge deal.
Couple details about ther song... this is my partner's favourite song of the Hip. He's older than me by 12 years, by that line about "classrooms hung with pictures of our parents' prime ministers". He says that's exactly what his classroom was like (in rural Saskatchewan as well).
I always wondered about the title.. makes me think if the WHL (hockey) team Brandon Wheat Kings - which is a small city in Manitoba. I believe "wheat kings" might be a name for the iconic but disappearing grain elevators of the prairies, including Saskatchewan.

Still remember seeing The Hip at the 930 club in DC. Saw them in Canada in a stadium and in the states in a club. So cool! Place was packed full of Canadian Expats. Such a great memory.
For awhile it seemed like 'Dial M For Murder' in Canada. Guy Paul Morin, Donald Marshall and David Milgard. Thank all the gods we don't have the death penalty. Courts make mistakes.
I just discovered your channel and have been enjoying your Hip reactions. I've been a lifelong Hip fan here in Canada and it's so nice to see people appreciating them.
I've would like to make a suggestion. It's not a music video but it was a project that included music that was very dear to Gord Downie before his passing. It's called The Secret Path. It's about the residential school's in Canada and the story of one boy, Chanie Wenjack. There is an official music video (It's called The Stranger) with beautiful animation here on youtube. I would highly recommend.

Canada's National Band. Their last concert, before Good Downey passed of cancer, was televised live across the country, and televised to arenas across the country. The Hip are a deep deep well. '50 Mission Cap' 'New Orleans is Sinking (by the way pulled from the airwaves for a time after Katrina), Courage, '100th Meridian' etc etc. Love your channel....Alberta, Canada.

Another important song about a wrongful murder conviction is Bob Dylan's "Hurricane". Ruben "Hurricane" Carter was wrongfully convicted in the USA, and it took many people many years to have his case reviewed. After his conviction was overturned, in part because of the publicity surrounding the Dylan song, and he was released, Mr. Carter moved to Canada.

Imagine driving east bound on the 101 comingbout of Brandon (home of the Brandon wheat kings hockey team) in late summer. Driving past fields of wheat as far as you can see in every direction and this song is on as loud as it goes. Windows down and watching the sunset behind you. Something that touches a flat landers soul.

So many classics....I love the Hip, have for a long time, but never knew the story behind the song.
I still miss Gord Downie. Love this band. They also do a song about a hockey player Bill Barilko called Fifty -Mission Cap. When Gord died, they placed a banner next to Bill's number in the rafters of the Air Canada Centre.
He was raped repeatedly in prison, had all his teeth knocked out, he suffered an unimaginable horror. I tear up just thinking about him. And only hope before his unfortunate passing that he found his peace. His mother Joyce was a true Saint, her faith and love and determination sustained him and brought about his absolution.
My friend's dad grew up in the neighborhood where David lived and said he had a reputation as a trouble maker. When she was found dead everyone said David must have did it. He was convicted by his community and police before he could even defend himself.
