    Michael Palin is so wonderful - I adore his travelogues, and to be singing the Finland song as he enters the country? That's just lovely!

    Palin is so charming that he's even nice when he's making fun of you.
    But who in his right mind wouldn't love and admire Finland?
    Palin also sang his song to congratulate Finland on 💯 years of independence - a touching gesture from a friend... 🇫🇮

    Well I sat on his knee. Joulupukki's, not Michael Palin's. I was also blessed to spend 5 years working in this beautiful part of the world teaching graphics at Rovaniemen Taide ja Kasiteollisuus Oppilaitos which is now The Unversity of Lapland. I would highly recommend a visit at any time of the year. Hyvaa Joulua!

    I must've misread you. I thought you said that 'god' always refers to a perfect being. I merely pointed out that ancient greeks referred to their gods as 'gods' and they were anything but perfect, but I guess you were only talking about christians here.. ?
    It's all a bit confusing with you lot.

    On the contrary. I doubt that you'd find it surprising at all that I don't have time to "read up on" things a random person in a YT comment section tells me to.
    Telling me to read up on things is redundant. You have to understand, I consider arguing about these subjects mainly entertainment, as they rarely lead to anyone changing their minds. When I make a simple "undergraduate level" argument, more often than not I am aware of it and there's a reason for it as well. Won't you humour me? :)

    Also, I was hoping you'd concentrate more on the "perfection is subjective" line rather than the rather obvious side-note before it.
    If you can show me two people who, when asked to list characteristics of a perfect being, will come up with the same exact list - in fact, most probably won't come up with anything at all. For example, I don't consider being able to know and see everything to be perfect.. in fact I find it a distressing concept.

    Not even bothering to have an actual discussion with you or touch on your other, very loaded questions, but I have a point to make.
    You believe in a personal god, correct? So if this god decides what is moral and what is not, isn't morality indeed subjective?

    I think it's you who doesn't understand the argument here. Instead of repeating what you said, why not concentrate on the point I made?
    Whether this god of yours is perfect (which I quite clearly think I demonstrated is a contradictory idea) and so on is irrelevant to the argument, that is subjective vs. objective.
    Look, the character limit is annoying as hell so if you really want to keep this going you're going to have to pm me, i can't be bothered doing it in comments.

    Probability is not evidence. Probability is chance. Two pieces of bread do not make a sandwich. They just make up a bit of a loaf.
    You assume the universe came out of nothing, and that it was tuned just to suit you.
    It obviously wasn't tuned well enough to correct your spelling errors. One "m" in cumulative, one "n" in tuning.

    Not invented but atleast some of the infrastructure we have today is originally funded by religious organisations.

  • @TristanJCumpole
    @TristanJCumpole 15 років тому

    What reality would that be? The one where you believe that the "hand of god" exists, or the one where you ascribe divinity into those gaps in your understanding of this universe? Millions of people can be wrong and deluded inasmuch as a single person can be. A "consensus religious majority" does not mean god exists. It just means there is a lot of you, and that is all.
    So what makes you a theist? Does god touch you daily, or do you merely just BELIEVE that?
    What evidence? Got any photos?

  • @StPaul76
    @StPaul76 15 років тому

    WTF is this religion vs. science discussion doing in a video about Michael Palin in Lappland..? Btw. to argue about religion and science is just as unproductive as comparing beliefs and knowledge. Belief in a religious way is an entity in itself. It's in the word. "Belief". It has nothing to do with measured facts.

  • @Venomousse

    I know, I said I thought it was very clever when I was 10.
    Instead of telling me to read up on things, why not go ahead and tell me how I'm wrong and I'm prepared to discuss it. I was expecting you to refute that resulting in a more interesting topic but if you don't want to play along then it's no fun :(
    If you just keep telling me to read up on things (you know I won't, either), it'll just make me think if you really know what you're on about yourself..

  • @Venomousse
    @Venomousse 15 років тому

    tl;dr - Whether god is perfect or not is irrelevant. Morality is subject to his will, and this effectively makes it subjective.
    I don't understand theists' obsession with the word 'objective'..

  • @Venomousse
    @Venomousse 15 років тому

    You just had to go and characterise your god as perfect. Perfection is a self-contradicting concept. "If god is perfect then can he make a rock that's too big for him to lift?" is something I thought was very clever when I was 10, and it seems fitting here..
    Furthermore, perfection is subjective.
    The only way I can see you going from here is saying that everyone perceives god differently and that his only universal characteristic is that he is 'perfect'.
    This doesn't make morality objective.
