Actually it was a very harmful rumour spread by news sites. There were examples of 'early bird deals' where people got an entire week, all inclusive for £500. Due to that rumour many people didn't have any sympathy for these people who had an awful time. I'd suggest watching Internet historians video on it. It's both informative and very entertaining
Fun fact: During the weekend it was happening, I saw a guy there post pictures of a staff handbook he'd found that told employees to keep a notebook and write down the brands they saw customers wearing--to look at clothing, phones, and watches, and glance at the customer's nametag and write all that down so the info could be packaged and sold later.

The actual results were that an absolute fucktonne of ordinary people got really horribly conned, not a bunch of shitty rich-kids, and again - the idea that it was JUST shitty rich kids that got fucked over by this is the biggest thing the organizers have made a point of using to make themselves look better and make the general public less sympathetic to their victims. It's something that only a few places have done the digging to find out (because they buried the lead on this as much as they could) so it's not surprising that y'all didn't know this - but it might be worth putting somewhere just so more people know that this isn't a story about some cheeky fuckers conning some Rich Kids and is a story about some rich fuckers conning ordinary people into a horrible situation.

As a producer myself I can guarantee that Google can teach you a lot more than you think, like renting a stage or renting pretty much anything actually, but if you want to produce an event, no matter how big or small, you need to have experience with budget and time estimates, logistics (specially off transport) , crew hiring, insurance, location permits and contracts, among other things, and of course if you are hiring artists to perform you need someone that understand the field, and a legal team that is specialized in the field you are trying to make the event (you can hire those pretty easily if you know what you are doing), meaning that in a lot of things you can kinda get by just using Google, but the chance for everything to go wrong is very high without experienced people behind the project.
Don’t forget that there were SOME normal people who bought the tickets on sale for $250. It was all fun in games until we learn that normal people got burned too.

Terrible thing is they were told by actual event planners that they needed more time to prepare this and the original island they booked wasnt large enough to house all those people. They were told to rent a cruise ship to house the rest of the people.

The mayor of a town in Belgium canceled a festival at the last minute because the required safety measures weren't present. (Vestiville if you want to look it up.) In the Netherlands a mayor lost her job for not canceling a New Year's Eve bonfire that was 4 times higher than it should have been. (About 131 ft./40 m instead of 32 ft./10 m.) The result was a rain of cinders that blew all over town and started fires all over town. A lynch mob went after the Mayor of Duisburg (Germany) after the 2010 Love Parade disaster. (21 people died.) As far as I can tell, this case is still in court as of 2017. Both organizers and city officials are charged in this case. So yes, local government does have a responsibility when it comes to festivals.

It's unreasonable to expect a mayor to review the safety and evacuation plan for every public event in their territory. How would that scale to a city like New York? The mayor's entire job would just be going over concerts safety plans 40hrs a week
