Why Are Fandoms So BAD?

- There is an endless case of fandoms such as Five Nights at Freddys, Rick and Morty, and Undertale that become bad or toxic without any real reason to why it became bad or toxic in the first place. In this video, we'll theorize what causes so many fandoms and communities to turn sour.
DISCLAIMER: Do not send any hate to anyone involved in these fandoms. I am also in no way encouraging hate towards anyone or anything mentioned above.

I find it ironic that 2 members of the Undertale fandom, one of the most toxic fandoms of all time, and one of the most notorious for ships, have replied to a comment about the problem, and agreed with the comment. It shows that there are good people in the fandom, but there will always be others that ruin the experience. Honestly, this is just proof that fandoms can be positive and negative, at the same time, on the same level.
Edit: Just fixed a grammar mistake.
@@w_ring as Joseph said, yes there are a lot of toxic people in the fandom, especially if we’re talking about undertale, but it is a relatively small percentage of it that has those characteristics. Still you can see a lot of them messing around and being, well, them, but that’s because the fandom grew up so big that even 10 percent of it means thousands of people being that toxic part. I think lots of fandoms are toxic because of a group mentality that causes people to worship the group or else you will be "Not a true fan"
Mhm! If you make ocs in the danganronpa fandom, your instantly a “normie” 😔
@@curlyhaircupid hello there fellow DR fan c:
It’s the same mentality as people that become too religious or devoted to a political ideology tbh
I mean take Undertale, as if you don't like a character or ship you know some people are probably going to attack you. But then you have the music and the creators that push through that to make good content and those are probably the best people in those communities.
This, like any group mentality, is what we evolved to have.
Belonging to a group and keeping out the perceived outsiders is what led to increased survival as well as acceptance by other members of our groups.
It’s something that a very rare few are able to avoid, but for the rest of us, we aren’t free of this group mentality, no matter how big or small it is.
God undertale’s fandom is so f*cking toxic sometimes, it’s just funny skeleton and good music

Toxic fans and haters make it bad. But I still like it even though I'm not part of the fandom.
As a person whos been in many Fandoms for the past years
Let's face it, no Fandom is safe, there's always something that ruins it, like the UA-camr said, the smallest percentage that ruins it all, they will always be relevant in the most active communities
Not all things in a Fanbase are bad, don't get me wrong! As a person in the Undertale Community, that Fanbase has it's share of toxic members and trash but some of it is good, like the Fan-Animation Contributes, or the Good Fanart that shows the beauty of the game! I personally love the game for what *IT* has done and not dislike it for what other's have done to ruin it, my love for that game is undying!
However, there is no blaming one side, everyone and anything has a downside, nothing will ever be perfect no matter how much we want it to be! When it comes to considering yourself apart of a Fanbase, consider yourself apart of the good side that embraces the best side of the Fandom and not the worst!
Edit:
I'd also like to say, every Fandom is bad in it's own way, but you shouldn't focus on the bad, do't let others kill your love for whatever Fandom you're in, embrace your love for what you like and never let people ruin it

A lot of that has to do with Doom being emotionally detached and lacking characters to become attached to and obsess over. Doom is about shooting demons, whereas Animal Crossing has far more personal investment and outlets for vapidity, if that makes sense. Even moreso with any property involving drama and romance, people are going to latch onto anything that makes those fatherless neurons tingle.

How to not be a toxic fan: Remember that the internet is not your life, it is merely entertainment in order to give you a break from the work that you are doing irl. Spend less time on your computer/ phone and give more things for you to do in real life in order for you to deserve that break.
Then once you are back on the internet you tend to take things less seriously, and you will be able to differentiate the internet from your real life.

@sourcreampringles yeah its been 6 yrs

That's because everyone in that fandom, toxic or no, is incredibly passionate about the game. While that may lead to some amazing fan games/animations/comics, it can also lead to vitriolic attacks whenever someone criticizes their game, and/or insults a popular content creator within. On the flip side, people who played Undertale and didn't really enjoy it can get infuriated by the dedicated fans liking something they don't and wasting so much time and effort on something that's "trash and generic'. This is the reason why the Undertale Hatedom is also one of the largest, bitter, angry, and rabid hatedoms out there.

ayo hi twin
i’m an active member of a couple fandoms. what it boils down to is a lot of kids who haven’t usually engaged online a lot who are without adult supervision for the first time. enjoying a fandom is all about curating your experiences there. if i see someone involved in drama, i block them, no questions asked and no hard feelings. i’ve got pretty strict boundaries, i mostly follow adults, and if i realize that a fandom is stressing me out, i leave. i’m okay with disagreeing with people i follow as long as they respect my opinion and i respect theirs. fandom is almost always a dumpster fire, but if you look in the right places, it can be an enjoyable and non-stressful dumpster fire.
Couldn't have said it any better!
When I started playing Genshin impact back shortly after it was released the fandom was really nice
Now today where the game has gotten so huge
The fandom has gotten so BEYOND toxic

Considering everyone's just trying to tell others what to do, who to ship etc.
I really loved your video, it's amazingly well explained
Thank you for this
I think toxic fandoms come from people trying to be “unique”. People want to join fandoms for the same reason people may want to join clubs, they not only get to meet with people who share the same interest, but they get to part of something “exclusive” to a relatively few number of people. However when something goes mainstream, like Rick and Morty or FNAF, that feeling of exclusivity dies off since if everyone is a fan, no one is. This forces the creation of “criteria” being met in order to qualify as being a “true fan”, creating the self-entitled people you see in toxic fandoms today.
Hmmmm. I get your point
I have a really bad story about fnaf, so when i was of 8, fnaf came out, and i watched and played it and seemed like a cool game to me, then fnaf 2 3 and 4 came out and the game was kind of scary to me so i left fnaf when i turned 11, and when ffps came out, i joined again, and wanted to go on a discord server to see what people thaught of it and the only thing i got was sheer horror what i didnt know at the time, and i never joined the fandom again and just watched dawko and 8-bit rayn play these games and sometimes play fnaf fan games, jesus christ horror game to porn show

Did you ever hear the tragedy of the Star Wars fandom?
I thought not. It's not a story Disney would tell you. It's a Lucasfilm Legend. The Star Wars fandom was one of the largest and solid fandoms in history. So large and so united, they could share with each other their thoughts, feelings, and creations to bring in new fans. They had such a knowledge of Star Wars, they could all discuss their opinions with facts and logic on either side of a discussion. The unification of a fandom is a pathway to many abilities some considered to be unnatural.
It became so large, the only thing that could happen was for it to shrink. Which, eventually, of course, it did. Unfortunately, when Disney bought Star Wars, they decanonized everything before, and made a new set of movies that divided the fanbase over a period of 3-5 years, leading to the fandom being abandoned by many as it grew into an all-out war between the remaining fans. Ironic. Disney raised the Star Wars brand, but that caused its downfall.
Is it possible to repair this fandom?

All whats popular shreds to end, it never stops and keeps on going no matter how popular it is.
Take it as an example, the Gacha Fandom.
It started off really well and the community was pretty polite at first but once you were able to customize characters and make your own films like in Gachaverse to Gacha Club, people began to go very trendy with it and at first, their creativity was fine but then it either began to involve other fandoms into their films or just simply copy the films that are trending in the community.
Part of the fandom either started getting really immature with their content or they're also starting to produce sexual content in, and that's when it started ruining the fandom since other fandoms or even theirselves started making fun of it.
And the last time I joined the official discord of Lunime, in my opinion. Most of people there acted very bizarre.
I would be wrong but this is how I see it in my opinion.
I mainly use Gacha Club for character creation due to lack of free resources that make characters that look like anime. I agree and I'd like to keep my use of it at that.
I have gacha club installed just to make my ocs and stuff. Though I want to get better at drawing/editing so I can completely leave gacha and maybe start a channel

I think a lot of the issues stem from the fact that a happy fan is a quiet one. The toxic fans will complain and pick fights whenever they can which inflates the perceived size of these people and taints the general view of the fandom.
That makes so much sense and it explains everything!
Vocal Minority vs Silent Majority
I like to think of it as 1 guy screaming and 99 people just sipping tea. Who ya gonna pay attention too?
This is true in most things. And it really is as simple as saying "calmer people talk less." People who, due to varying reasons, are more prone to anger, can't control their emotions, or don't know good self control, tend to have more "stage presence" and act more loudly. You can imagine a fandom like a room full of people. The creepy, weird, and obnoxious ones are going to garner the most attention, while the quiet, nicer people hide in the corners away from them. This is true for practically any form of human gatherings, however in real life there's a lot more incentive to hide your weird-ness and act civil. In real life, you can also police who enters your group and who doesn't, whereas online, any sick f*ck could just claim they're part of a fandom and drag down it's image.
Unfortunately, the solution(s) are either non-viable, or involve lots of rules that nobody will like, like "gatekeeping." And unlike real-life gatherings, there's no "officials" who can police/control things, so the decisions have to be made by the fandom members themselves, making it hard to enforce rules. Other solutions would be to censor things so that people with problematic personality quirks (from something as small as anger issues, to as vile as them being a p*doph*le) wouldn't be allowed to take part in the fandom. That would be problematic however, due to violating free speech. Some forums/fandoms have mods who can kick/ban people who break rules, but it's the internet, meaning those people can simply go somewhere else. There is no "internet jail" for the sick-minded, nor an asylum for the mentally un-well.

Rather than defame the entire fandom, defame the people that *MADE* the fandom look bad.
Reminder to fandoms: don’t ship people if they hate each other ( Tom and Tord for example), and don’t ship people to the same gender if they’re obviously straight and has been stated that they are straight by the creator itself ( my hero academia for example).
I mean, as long as they aren't real i think it's fine shipping two character that hate each other lol
@@movedchannels3680 Tom and Tord are both based on real life people. The character themselves were literally trying to kill each other. People shouldn’t fantasize about toxic relationships because it’s unrealistic and damaging.

I saw someone say once that a reason for large fandoms often ending up toxic is a 1% rule (or whatever other small percent), basically that there's always a small percentage of people that are gonna be toxic, and they're always going to be some of the loudest. Smaller fandoms can better handle these types of people; a niche fandom with around a thousand people for example will only maybe have a dozen people like this, a group which can easily be distanced from and can't sustain themselves. With larger fandoms, these groups are also much larger, and they're much harder to deal with well, especially since in large fandoms they can end up being completely self-sustaining. For example, a large, hundred thousand people group might have a thousand toxic people, as many as some small communities/fandoms.
Fandoms these days ruin everything, more than the creators and/or studios ever will.

the toxic people in fandoms tend to cause so much drama and more spotlight that it will affect good ones in the fandom

Honestly the most negative experiences in fandoms I have are in those who either hate (ironically or otherwise) on some part of the source material (such as the Danganronpa fandom), the fandoms that seem to get really sanctimonious about the 'correct way' to enjoy the source material (such as Fate, at least in my experience), and the ones that get into endless fights about which character's the best and/or waifu wars (Quintessential Quintuplets traumatised me)
My personal least favourite fandom I've seen is the ToAru fandom, some people are chill but it's... hell on earth as it combines all three of the above traits and slams them together in the worst way possible- I love the series but every time I go anywhere near the fandom I feel all my enjoyment being sucked out of it, and that's just not right, I want to enjoy my damn fantasy/action/comedy series without someone complaining about how the MC is the worst, or how the adaptation is shit and the source material is the only proper thing you can read, or how one girl is better than the other, or how this major character is amazing whilst this one is shit...
Oh well, I suppose that's this rant over. But yeah, fandoms suck ass in a lot of ways
A good way to gauge whether a fandom may become toxic is to visualize the worst case scenario person to be attracted to the type of content that it is. How likely is it to attract antisocial behavior, how likely it is to be overly personable to certain people, or how likely it is to attract avid and vocal fetishists or fanfic writers.

I’m kinda late to the party, but I saw a lot of arguing in the comments (to be expected) and wanted to come and give an update on the Undertale fandom. I’ve been in it for 5 years and just recently became active in it again. Back in 2016 and 2017 there were definitely a lot of toxic fans, no denying that. When I checked in on it a couple months ago, though, it seemed like a lot of those people had moved on to other fandoms to corrupt. I’m not saying there’s no toxic fans left - there’s probably hordes of them lurking somewhere - but most of what I’ve seen as of recently is very positive and friendly, especially on Instagram! The art community I’m in also focuses on characters other than Sans so that’s great too lmao
@Rezakoplak ! You have my sympathies.
Ah. Of course it's the ONE fandom that has affected me the most. I mean, I stick to the creative/chill side of the Dream SMP/Team fandom so I wasn't really aware of that. Ngl, it's good to keep in mind that it's the toxic Undertale "fans"
@@itsgirlcraft5842 Those people's existence is why we can't have nice things.

But what can ya' do?
This is the problem with fandoms nowadays! seeing how any fandoms now are becoming so bad! like ones that are cringey or ones that are toxic though.
But yet we even have things that have their own fandoms turn from being cringey to toxic! from seeing the two games five nights at freddy's and fortnite
The two games I know of that did used to have cringey fandoms I remember but turn to toxic that I never find that to be a good sign to see those fandoms.
Turning from cringey to toxic which even I can see how bad fandoms can give those things bad rep and even bad fandoms can be one of the main reasons
Why those things get hate! which I even can see how bad fandoms can actually affect those things to be honest.
FNAF fandom is either toxic as heck or cool as heck.
As someone in the fandom, i gotta 100% agree with that one.

im pretty sure that never happened since it happens a lot, we just comment about it
There's also people who stand in the middle, whether they are sometimes toxic and sometimes nice. Some only act the way they're beating treated; they are nice to nice people but toxic to toxic people. I honestly feel like I fall into this category, after all, treat others the way you want to be treated. Someone being an asshole to you? Return the favor, but don't take it a step too far.
I fall into that middle category too
I feel like it's the best category

Like personally I respect people's opinions on steven universe. After all, I can tell it's a very flawed show and not everyone's cup of tea. But then there's those people that just hate it,,, to hate it. No reason why, just because it's popular to hate it.

@@tunasalad9693 thats dumb as fuck, ive never seen it but i dont immediatly think its bad, atleast it has lore.
There was a girl in my class, and if you said *anything* remotely negative against BTS she would actually start throwing hands screaming, “YoUr RaCiSt” (Which isn’t the case) so each time, everyone had to explain that BTS isn’t their cup of tea
okay im sure not everyone? and im sure a lot of people like BTS but some of them keep a low profile. Like my brother,
Caught him tuning to BTS just recently when i thought he had no interest in them.I hope you actually focus in the good side of armys, we honestly contributed a LOT
the thing that stopped me from even stepping foot in certain fandoms is the people who multiship underaged characters with adults. this goes for five nights at freddies and undertale. i realised quickly that most communities will have immature audiences, and i understood that i had to avoid those people.
But what some people don't realise is that every single fandom will have their downfall, and will eventually blow up with a ton of teenagers. this goes for my hero academia or dsmp. and that fandom will rely on those teenagers to keep the community popular. But also, there is a minority that screw up that reputation. like most things, it will get backlash even for those who weren't part of that wrong doing.
toxic people are everywhere. from a workplace, to people behind a screen. there always will be someone to dislike a show, or the animation within a game or anime. people like that don't like others to have a different opinion, and sometimes that's the reality that comes with a fandom. and to avoid those people, we have to be vocal about how they are wrong, and not everyone within that fandom is like said person. this goes for genshin impact specifically.
if anything, tiktok and other social media websites are the root problem to these fandoms. problematic people will always find a way to ruin something for someone else. their actions get spread faster than any other platform, and outsiders would find it disgusting and push away the entire fandom instead of those individuals.
At least the games and shows tend to be good
Ayy, bit of positivity :)
I thought the games hot a bad rep cause of toxic gamers
@Sowf Echo Personally disagree. But yes, there are a lot of writing potholes, but the characters (and fucking aniMATION HAVE YOU SEEN THAT SHIT AHHHH-) often make it up for me when it comes to character development falling flat or the plot becoming redundant. I also think the fact I get hyperfixations too easy and cant let go of shows or characters doesn't uhm,,, help me. At all. But I _could_ go on a rant about the issues in writing still. I just uhm,,, won't be able to let them stop me enjoying the show and attaching myself to characters.

Mha fandom in a nutshell
Yes
I think that toxic people have interpreted the word “fan” from “hey I like this” into “ I must be addicted to this”. For example, I am a fnaf fan but I have not played all of the games or maybe not know the full lore but I still enjoy the series and the content and this also applies to other fandom fans. I should not have to be addicted or know everything that is going on to be “a fan”.
i wished more people like you existed
Thanks man and I wish more people are respecting fandoms like you
That's gatekeeping
you know, if that's their interpretation, i would rather _not_ be a "true fan"
glad to find someone i agree with
they take "fan" as shorthand for "fanatic"
I am a firm believer that fandoms as a whole are good. Some are more toxic and unpleasant, but I feel most are chill and kind where it’s just a bunch of people who all share the same love for a piece of media. Great video! Lots of good points! ♥️♥️
