I appreciate what you are trying to quantify with the water absorption, however, I believe that the surface area of the polyester filler was significantly larger than that of the duraglass, which may have skewed your results. I think a better approach would have been to use the same volume of each filler going into the same mold; let harden and then remove the molds. Weigh each initially and then leave each in water for 24-hours. They weigh the end result and calculate the percent gain in water with [(end weight - initial weight) / initial weight] * 100. Just a thought to consider.
Really like what Eastwood has been doing. Keep up the good work!
We will pass this along to the R&D manager! Thanks for the feedback.
I think too that when the duraglass was filed it opened up the pores where if it were wiped in a welded seam the only portion to see moisture would be the backside. Which cannot be sanded, hence the repair. I'm just wondering if unsanded filler vs open pore filler absorbs more water
the problem with the test is that the bondo was submerged for 24 hours and that type of water exposure would never happen in a real life situation unless the vehicle was under water for 24 hours so maybe the problem with the paint job was caused by something else .
Always go over welded areas with fiberglass filler before you use polyester filler.
That or all metal
Yup I always use short strand fiberglass over all welded areas then my filler no problems on my 98 Z71 five years 100 000km later💪 Never use that all metal crap the stuff will crack and fuck up !
Awesome job. I spray undercoating behind the fixed area to prevent moisture penetrating
I appreciate it's old fashioned but tinning and lead is brilliant when you strip a rusty car 30 years later.
Hello; Don't believe that the body filler absorbed the moisture.Body filler , by itself is porous, water will go through it. The weld or braze should be washed and treated before it is covered and yes the back of the weld should always be sealed. Impressed with your thorough test though. Thank You
The mass should’ve remained the same. Simple math would’ve provided the results. But I suppose not everybody can be as thorough as Project Farm.
You mention Duraglass but neither of the products in the description have that name in them. Assume you mean "Eastwood's Contour® Micro-Strand Filler"?
Well I thought you could just sand a weld and move on. Thank you for the free knowledge
What would be best to spray over areas you used filler on a car you are working on outdoors?(so it doesn't absorb water) Can I just spray primer over it? Does it need to be epoxy or can i just use self etching?
A time study would be interesting. See if it gains weight over time, like a month or so...
Is bondo-glass the same as duraglass?
Good to know thanks.
