LUCKY I can only imagine. would've loved to see this in a theater. as a New Englander this movie really gets to me in ways im not sure everyone gets. the seagulls high pitch squawks that flows with the breeze, its calming. or the way winslow talks, or how I can feel the humidity both men must be writhing in during the daylight, especially with heavy fog, and how at night it can get worse when you just want to relax but your ankles feel near soaked with sweat under a blanket that will expose you to the most fridgid cold if you where to take it off.
Could it be because it’s in black in white? Maybe less intense colors are soothing haha. I wonder if people fell asleep in the old theaters with no lights or sound?

During the production of the scene. Dafoe and Pattinson had to force themselves not to be blinded by the light emitted by the lantern which is actually a modern light set illusion that illuminates behind to make the camera and lighting more appealing in Greyscale. Both actors can't see each other and have to act blindly in the light without messing their dialogues.
Just noticed tom doesnt even drink to his own toast cus he's really anticipating winslow taking a drink of the water. Lmao look at toms facial expression as they dink cups, fantastic yet very subtle acting I LOVE IT
That's what you get when you put two fantastic actors in a film where you have no idea what's going to happen next. If they don't make Willem Dafoe the live-action version of Joker in Robert Pattinsons Batman film series , it's a giant missed opportunity. The interactions they could have with each other as The Dark Knight and Clown Prince of Crime would be amazing.
I love those little non-verbal cues. Tom already knows the cistern water is going to taste like sh*t. We're also establishing that Tom has a slightly cruel sense of humor right at the start.
I was thinking the same thing. It's not perfect but looks like a decent home-cooked meal to me. With them just having the same thing over and over for 4 weeks straight I can see why he got frustrated.

Justin Gary I personally don’t see it but even still I think it’s very deliberate that Wakes plate looks piping hot and Winslow’s looks (as the script details) “lukewarm”. Keep in mind the light exposure on both of them is more or less equal.
Ali Shabbiri The script divulges quite extensively at Winslow’s displeasure for their “lukewarm cod and potatoes”. It’s not really meant to symbolize anything other than visually represent the disproportion in the two characters, one feeling cozy and at home and the other feeling depressed and oppressed all to fuck.
PriceyEric The script details Winslow’s displeasure with his dinner always being lukewarm, just another turd to throw on his shit pile if you get what I’m saying. His experience on the island with Wake is just miserable in every way shape and form, including cold dinners.
@@ljp719 that makes sense. But i do think that the hot vs cold contrast could symbolize something else. They put a weird amount of emphasis on food and the dinner table, it's difficult to imagine that this particular image isn't meant to say anything more. What that might be is far beyond me, but I think you've sussed out a piece of a larger puzzle in regards to this particular part of the movie

Serious question here: why did the water taste bad and whats a cistern? I wasnt born in the 1800s so idk nor do i have education in wells and/or sewage stuff
A cistern is used for water storage, and would be the source of all their drinking water on the island, but it shows later on in the film that there's a dead seagull in there that's decomposing and contaminating the water, which is why Winslow spits his water out, as it's mixed with loads of rotten shit. Hope this helps.
@@loomingmoon4682 the dying gull appeared later. A few minutes after this scene, you can see Winslow/Tommy clearing the cistern and there's no dead gull in it. The cistern was just dirty.
