    How I turned a Harbor freight motorcycle lift into a multi use plywood lift feed table/adjustable height work bench
    Product:

    www.harborfreig...
    You can usually find a coupon and purchase the lift for $359.00
    The only assembly I needed to do was mount 4 wheels. At about 300lbs, it is a tough one to move around.
    I secured my Ron Paulk work bench to the lift
    I Plan to add slide out-riggers for stability and material holding

    Thank you for this video. Based on your experience I bought a Harbor Freight Motorcycle lift to replace the saw horses for my Ron Paulk inspired work benches. The ability to raise and lower my benches is a blessing.

    Good job! I did something similar to solve a space problem, and it's been working great for 4 years now. My two passions are woodworking and old Norton motorcycles. I already had a pneumatic motorcycle lift and my shop is small -- so I made a workbench top for the lift that is removable when I want to work on my moto. It converts from one to the other in less than 5 minutes. Now, if I could just rig a mini-gantry to pull the bench top up to the ceiling...

    Great! Two birds with one stone. I was about to build an infeed table for the radial saw and I also need a lawnmower lift. Thanks for the idea!

      Thanks Nate, like anything else, I will use if for a while, then apply some modifications to it.

    Now that's what I call thinking outside of the box! it seems to me, no matter how high my work bench is, it never seems to be just the right height. whereas the table saw is always the right height.
    Kudos to you. you see a problem/need then you resolve it!

    Having had one of these lifts for a while I learned a few things. Don't leave the lift up overnight unless the bar is used and pressure relieved as the oil will drain away from the piston and the piston might score the side of the cylinder. As the lift goes up the weight goes forward, I have had it go far enough to tip, adding outriggers that go forward is advised. I made a frame underneath with 4 swivel castors and this helps with stability and moving. The price goes as low as 299 and I have seen them on Craigslist for less.

      I noticed I needed the bar on day 1. I guess that is why they supplied it. Outriggers will be done soon...

    This made me laugh because years ago I needed a platform to work on a motorcycle, but knowing that I wasn't going to make a long-term hobby of working on motorcycles I didn't want to buy the Harbor Freight lift, so I made one out of (scrap) plywood. This feels like the opposite solution. :) Definitely a good one for those who have room for it.

    If I were to build this I think that I would turn the outriggers into an adjustable wheel base or simply widen out the wheel base.

    I've been thinking to do this for a few years, but haven't been convinced about stability. Aside from the additional outriggers, how wobbly is it? I mean, if the bottom were rigidly attached to the floor, would the top be stable?

    Some ideas seem great at first but after some actual shop time they just miss the mark for one reason or another. I would love to hear how this has worked out over time. You posted the video in January of 2017 and now it is November. You certainly have enough time to know whether this idea is a winner or not. I am very concerned about how stable it is to side to side movement. I love the idea of a Paulk table that is that easy to height adjust but if is has lateral movement then that would be a major problem. Can you give us some form of update on how well this is working.
    Great videos, keep up the good work

    How is it holding up? Is it still sturdy? I'm looking at doing this but with a laminated 2x4 top for my workbench/ assembly/ indeed/ outfeed table. I have a small shop so I have to really maximize space and tools for efficiency. My workbench will probably be 3'x7' or 8'. Do you think this lift will be stable enough for that?

    • @brianway
      @brianway  6 років тому

      this bench is 3x7, you could go 8' long, but I would not go wider than 3' Also, need a couple of outriggers like i mentioned in the video (but have never done...) Definitely love the bench, always adjusting the height for my current needs.

    would this work with a 4x8 workbench on top? also have you welded the outriggers to see if it helps?

  • @kebatronic
    @kebatronic 7 років тому

    Any update on this project? Did you end up adding any more stabilization? Does the lift have any lateral racking or looseness? I have been thinking about making one a base for a more traditional woodworking bench, but it would need to be pretty stable/sturdy for handwork...

  • @TheWatchit45

    Great idea Brian, hmmmm, how can you make the stabilizers adjust hydraulically to account for an uneven floor? Looking foreword to seeing that solution.

      It would be great to find a small battery powered hydraulic system that could lift and self level items like your bench, table saw, etc. Thank you for replying, have a great day.

    hey brian I'm hoping this will be what I'm looking for in my shop as well. quick question. i have a 4x8 paulk type bench and would be looking to use the HF underneath it as an assembly table. do you think a 4x8 top would be to wobbly on this?

    • @brianway
      @brianway  6 років тому

      Dean Rovedo Jr. Well I think the Paulk table is 3 x 7, could be a little wobbly at 4x8. It is a great secondary table for me, especially as the feed table for my table saw

    • @brianway
      @brianway  6 років тому

      Dean Rovedo Jr. If it is your only assembly table, it may not be sturdy enough
