  • Here's my review of Rogue, where the Doctor and Ruby Sunday travel to 1813 and encounter a mysterious bounty hunter named Rogue. I discuss those cosplaying shapeshifters, the Doctor's queer romance and speculate on what this week's episode will reveal about the mysterious Susan Triad (Susan Twist)!
What did YOU think of the episode?
The Confused Adipose's Sutekh theory: • DOCTOR WHO IS ABOUT TO...
The Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and his companion, Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) travel to 1813 where they meet a mysterious bounty hunter named Rogue. Portrayed by Jonathan Groff, Rogue is trying to hunt and kill a criminal member of the shape-shifting Chuldur species.

I think the red/blue sonic thing is just a fun homage to 11's bow ties but reversed. Red sonic for stories set in the past, blue one for stories set in the future/present day.

There is such a Time Lord in the comics called The Corsair. She is known for frequently switching genders when she regenerates. So much so she always gets a snake eating itself tattoo. Her distress signal and arm are seen in the episode of Doctor Who where the 11th Doctor meets The Tardis as a woman. She has a curved sword and sonic.

A theory I like about Richard E Grants canonicity is that, since rogue has multidimensional technology, his scanners may have picked up on a doctor from a split timeline. Either that, or its the toymakers influence, merging an alternate timeline and bringing the shalka doctor into main canon.

I don't think the Doctor putting on Rogue's ring means an engagement necessarily. For a start, he puts it on his little finger rather than the more traditional ring finger. Personally, I just thought he put it on as a reminder to try and find Rogue. That was my interpretation, anyway.

That very well could be, and I don't remember if they wore wedding rings after they got married. Doctor and River that is as they just used his bow tie as a form of bond.
For all we know, maybe Time Lords don't specifically have a certain finger they wear it on.

I don't think the marriage proposal was legitimate. They'd only know each other for like... An hour or two. I think the proposal was part of the ruse - Rogue didn't know what to say so he just decided to propose. It may have caught the Doctor off guard but I don't think it was taken out of context to their pantomime.

Rogue has to be somehow capable of time travel given that he has a space ship, plays D&D and listens to Kylie Minogue all in 1813. Gien all of that though how does he not know about cosplay, especially if he plays D&D?
I don't know that the Doctor is 'marrying' Rogue, but he definitely wants to remember him.
You don't credit the person sitting for a portrait. You credit the artist who created it. Russell is just flat-out trolling us now.
I wonder what Mrs. Flood is up to? Anyone remember her?
Lastly, this episode makes me even madder about _The Devil's Chord._ In this episode we get music by Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga, and Kylie Minogue, but Disney _(freakin' corporate Midgard Serpent Disney!)_ can't spring for even a line of "Love Me Do"?!? Sixty years on and _The Chase_ is still the definitive Beatles episode of Doctor Who. _GRRR!_ They should have just made that episode about Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga, or Kylie Minogue.

I was a bit disappointed how the Doctor brushes off finding Rogue at the end. The Doctor normally takes impossible hurdles as a challenge and rallies to find a solution, but here he just gets deflated and effectively gives up. Also I thought the performance of Rogue was a bit flat and characterless. It didn’t feel like he was a strong enough personality to justify the Doctor’s sparks. Felt a bit one sided.

  • @jimrockford9486
    @jimrockford9486 Місяць тому +1

I had no problem with seeing the kiss shared between the Doctor and Rogue. I really think though that a romantic or involved Doctor brings problems and does make he/him or she/her make hap hazard decisions that can lead to catastrophe. The Doctor was about to lose it when 1st, he thought Ruby was dead, 2nd, when he lost who he thought might be a soul mate and then he just shuts it off. That's dangerous. It makes him impulsive and this Doctor is by far the most emotional Doctor we have seen. He reminds me of a woman while she is pregnant and goes through extreme mood swings. I don't think bi-generation is a good thing. I believe it shows that he might be a demigod that has celestial powers and bi-generation is only used in an extreme crisis, both mentally and the situation with his own past is catching up with him. Almost a bi-polar Doctor Who. Which would be a great way to include people even fans, that they aren't alone in their struggle through this life. But I am off in the weeds here, so we will see what happens. Maybe the 3rd Doctor will make an appearance to help out his future self. WHO NOSE! ☝🏻👃🏻

The doctor for me has always had relationships, albeit short, off camera. I seem to remember in 11th's Christmas Carol episode, the doctor was about to go to Vegas with Marilyn Monroe. And the 10th at the beginning of the 50th special was involved with Queen Elizabeth I, like a fling or something like that.
They've avoided involving themself with companions, and whenever they've invited love interests to travel on the tradis, bad things happen: madame de pompadour early death and now rogue lost in dimensions.

I'm sorry but they wrote the old doctors as completely asexual. He didnt flirt with people, he didnt fall in love with random people or his companions. he just explored the universe, finding new wonders and saving the day. It isnt exactly clear who susan actually is in the first series either, outside of him calling her his grand daughter, we have no idea how timelord society works, how they procreate or if she is actually even related to him. He was never written that way until RTD came along in 2005. Even then he never went as far to show the doctor as actively hitting on people to bed them, they came onto him and he usually rejected them on the basis that he will outlive them and isnt interested in that at all.

I don't know, I am not as attached to Ruby, nothing wrong with the actress, just I partly don't care for her. The only true companions I really liked all throughout New Who and New New Who is Donna, Rory, and Graham. With special mentions of Captain Jack, River Song, Madame Vastra, Jenny, and Straxx. I really liked the Victorian Clara more so than the Clara we get from then on in. Clara as the Dalek Oswin Oswald was good too
I was actually really hoping that Ruby did die, her mystery just dropped and the show continues on with The Doctor and Rogue from then on it for the rest of Ncuti's Run.
I really hope The Doctor actually does try and go looking for him, because my goodness do I want them to be together. Also there was a bit of flirting between Captain Jack and Christopher's Doctor too.

Of course it happened all the time, it just wouldn't be acknowledged in 'polite' society.

I'm ace and view the doctorbas asexual, but asexual folks aren't automatically aromantic, so I think the doctor catching feelings for folks he grows close to doesn't negate the potential of him being ace.
Even in Rogue, while the relationship happens quickly because of the necessity of fitting it in one episode, they clearly have moments of bonding where they both realize they are very alike.

Well.... as a gayer myself.... I was perhaps less impressed with this element of the plot.... or perhaps I should say the execution of it. And I feel it's lack of finesse will be used as ammunition by any more regressive heterosexual audience member to reinforce their negative opinions of 'non conventional' people
Every other time we have seen the Doctor in some form of 'intimacy' it's been presented with the concept that it's as alien to him as he is to us. With River, he was constantly wrong footed and intrigued. With Reinette it was intimate and romantic after her initial 'snog' initiation. With Rose it was slow building and ultimately explained as being impossible due to the life expectancy situation. With Yaz it felt like even acknowledging her feelings would hurt her more as they couldn't be returned.
This just felt like a bad Grindr hook up... the Doctor got a boner at some alien hot guy and decided to get straight to action (Via a stereotypical bit of 'Camp Clubbing'). RTD has been very forthright about presenting his version of Gay Life in Drama (which is a very different experience to mine) so it shouldn't surprise me that that is the version that the writers present to screen here. It's just such a shame that this is the, so far, only time the Doctor has been unequivocally shown to have 'feelings' towards a man..... and it's presented as a hook up with none of the complexities afforded the other 'romances' he's had. It's shows the Doctor a bit like those married guys who get off with blokes on the DL after picking them up in restrooms, cruising spots or online.
Perhaps if Rogue was less like Captain Jack with the accent, invisible ship, sexual flexibility etc etc I wouldn't have been reminded of the far superior Torchwood episode 'Captain Jack Harkness' of which this episode felt like a very bad cosplay of... and while I wish that were the case, I think reminding people of a years old story is crediting this with more metatexuality than it deseves. Because it feel more like really bad shipping fan fiction... or an AI generated storywith 'Jack Harkness' as the cue words.
And to finish my rant.... just to put it in context why I'm a gay man (attracted to other male people.... not just their 'hotness' or their genitals) finds this story objectionable: imagine how you would feel if the character of the Doctor suddenly started wearing sports team clothing, drinking beer and screaming out 'Pussy Power' while trying to finger bang the next random attractive female he meets. While he farts in Ruby's face. It's that level of offensive stereotyping. But having read 'The Writer's Tale' back in the day....I realised RTD has a very different 'gay outlook' to me, so I can see why this story was made
    Rant over

And the reason, I think, is the Disney influence that is being exerted upon the production.
