Hey everyone. I know the audio on the first four installments of this project somehow posted loud. If I could adjust the volume post upload, or if I could replace it with a new version with lower volume I would (I do not think it is possible but if someone out here knows how please do tell). The volume is changed in the last few installments. So for now... sorry for the audio inconvenience, just turn it down a couple of notches during the music, thanks.
Ignore the haters Daniel. Your work stands for itself !
Sure, the volume was loud, but the music was weird and didn't go with the project. It wasn't good music. Not a hater, so chill. Just not good music choice.
Music, as with most things in life is a matter of taste. Personally, I also have my dislikes. However, we all can't get everything we encounter to fit perfectly to our own taste, it's a fact of life. You can please some of the people all the time and all of the people some of the time. You can never please all of the people all of the time. I enjoyed this video and appreciate his acknowledgement of the audio issues, that he is willing to correct going forward. Thank you for letting us into your life to see how it's done, your willingness to learn should be an inspiration to us all.
Thanks so much!@@rexhapgood5000
Got to love how the youtube algorithm manages to trow all the Tally Ho side projects at me. first a anchor whinch, then a mold making (for anchor winch) and now a fiddle maker!
Phenomenal how Leo has gotten so many people interested in his project. The off-shoot projects have been equally amazing as Tally-ho herself.
I agree, his project really has gone far and wide!
Sampson Boat Company is the best channel I’ve ever seen on screw tube. The Tally Ho project is revolutionary.
Found leo when he was just 1 guy putting up a shed with a dream. Amazing to see his growth and hope it only grows. Best content on any media
I was the same. I saw it early on and was just amazed to see the project grow!
Now that the violin is in the house I had to come see this. I've watched other "Luthiers" with passing interest but now, a much more important reason to watch. I'm happy not seeing a setup on a CNC and actually done by hand.
Thanks so much taking the time to watch. I agree about the CNC comment. Dont get me wrong it has its place but I love seeing things done by hand as well.
an amazing and unique project for a fantastic cause - pure delight
So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for taking the time to watch.
loving all the Tally-Ho crossovers
I know right! It is such a broad and great community.
❤ Tally ho
I'm all good with this as long as we don't have to listen to Leo learning to play it.
haha! I get that. I had a friend who was learning and he would play in a bathroom across the house with a mute on the bridge and his wife said it was still too loud and made him play outside.
You sir must be standing on the deck playing this creation at launch. New viewer. Subscribed.
I too have followed the Tally Ho restoration from the very beginning. Your contribution is a fantastic addition to the Tally Ho saga. Great job!
Thanks so much! I appreciate that.
And another example of how Leo is touching lives and souls with what he is doing. Great work sir, this is exciting to watch!
Thanks so much!! Yeah that project really stretches far and wide!
What a neat idea!
Amazing!!!
That first song was beautiful! I haven't heard something new that I liked in a long time!
Thanks for that!
@@JDanielGraham I was actually inspired to pick up Banjo from listening to Mr Montana and your beautifulwork on that Fiddle. I found a cheapy on Craigslist for $160 and I spent a couple hours practicing today. Restringed it, cleaned it and learned how to tune today also! Once I feel more proficient and get into it more I'd like to pick up a DIY Moutain Banjo from Carver Banjos, what beautys! Thanks for your awesome work and the music!
So cool!! Thats awesome. Well i have something else you might be interested in... I teach a bare bones beginners banjo video class, on demand at your own pace. And one to build your own banjo from scratch. Links below. ua-cam.com/video/bNmIbzFoGh4/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/xLWuYPbx4ZQ/v-deo.html @@Smokkedandslammed
Nice skills, man. And nice work. And you're doing something for Tally HO! BIG UPS!!
Thanks so much!
Awesome!
As a fan of Tally Ho and of Olaf the Violinmaker, it's fabulous to see the two activities combined! Lee Valley has those miniature coffin planes, I believe the body is solid brass.
Thanks! Im excited to share a little of the process and the project. I have the mini lee valley shoulder plane and use it all the time! ill look into the coffin smoother. I still want the little block plane!

Such a cool project
I found you via Tally Ho's latest video. It's easy to tell that you're an educator. I found it very easy to follow your assembly. In fact, you've inspired me to try something like this myself. Thanks much.
Great! Thanks for giving your time to watch. Instrument making is super fun but be careful it can be addictive, especially making banjos.
cool! great video!
I haven't seen the complete videos yet ... just wanted to get into thanking you for making that offer to bring a particular brand of music to the Tally Ho. I love the sound of the violin, have one of my own, used to be able to play it too. Boy oh boy I do like the detail you give to your craft to produce the instruments. Merry Christmas
Thanks so much! I hope you enjoy watching them! I am personally just starting to learn to play after making them for years. I play and make banjos mostly. I hope you have a Merry Christmas as well.
awesome
Ohhhhhhh, I was wondering why all of a sudden violin repair had been pushed into my feed - now the connection is there, the Tally Ho project. That series is my Sunday treat.
It is such a fun project to watch!
I’m second time here, so re-watching and enjoying just as much as the first time. Beautiful work!
My wife has just started learning in the violin and I’ve passed this to her, hopefully she can enjoy learning too what goes into making one of the world’s most exquisite musical instruments, built here with care and love.
Cheers from a Hong Kong sailor and long-time follower of Leo.
Wow! Thats awesome! I just wrapped another violin build if you have not seen that one. It is a good one. ua-cam.com/play/PL-oy0wwDZFUaZHHWOTlg-TQfJz4ubEQvv.html
And hey if you your wife ever wants a custom violin you know who to reach out to! Thanks for taking the time to watch.
I'm just now beginning to watch this series, after learning about the violin/fiddle thru Leo's latest video when he shares the news with us that you've so graciously built this wonderful instrument for him and Tally Ho. It is absolutely beautiful! Merry Christmas to you!
Thanks so much! It was an honor and pleasure to make it for them. Merry Christmas to you and your family as well.
JDG, you had me at Tally Ho. Great soundtrack, narration and camerawork. Looking forward to the series.
Thanks so much! I appreciate it, yeah and stay tuned!
What a lovely idea making a muscal insturment from wood that may have gone into Tally-Ho but never quite made it. Sort of compensation for the pieces of wood isn't it. ?
Thanks! I always like the idea that the smallest pieces that could be discarded could become something beautiful!
So glad youre involved Mr. Graham. Leo finds the BEST. TH's rig will sing along.
I hope they enjoy it! Im glad to be involved.
Brilliant!
Thanks so much.
Love to see Patrick et al doing a hornpipe to this instrument. Watching skilled artisans is always inspiring.
haha! love Patrick. I should really make him a kazoo (or something) made from Tally Ho wood.
@@JDanielGrahamIf you haven’t already that would be a great video. Maybe adorn some curly wood “hair” like the Duchess of Desire as you’re building it.
@@c0mputer that would be good!
This is a new way to get viewers
Oh, I am loving this... I haven't missed a second of the Tally Ho build and I wont be missing any of this build either. Subscribed....
Thanks so much! I really appreciate that.
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL pieces of wood! Perfect grain, no knots, checks,or any other defects. WOW!
I thought it was going to be made from Tally-Ho original woods , but I’m confused if these were planed up original woods recovered from the ship , or are they new pieces , but just from the same woods they are refurbishing Tall-Ho with ?
New Zealand viewer, nerding out before you even cracked the box. Who would have thought?
Nice to see such talent as yours flowing through Tally-Ho's veins. "Good Work!"....
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it.
What an awesome project! You are a true Craftsman. Can't wait to see the finished product. I know Leo will really like and enjoy this traditional fiddle.
Thanks I appreciate it. I hope he likes it as well!
As a patreon of Tally Ho, and a retired violinist, I am delighted to find your incredible project complementing Leo's and his colleagues' creation. Thank you Mr. Graham for dedicating your time and skills to build a great tribute to the story of Tally Ho.
Thanks so much. It was a real pleasure to be able to contribute in some little way to the project.
First time watching a violin/fiddle creation. Fascinating. Thank you.
Its a wild rabbit hole!
Cool project. Also, love clock chimes! They sounded nice.
This will be a splendid addition to the Tally Ho project. One thing just leads to another doesn't it? The luthier and the boat builder have much in common. It's all about the curves. You will not regret taking this on.
Boat builders and luthiers have so much in common! yeah I am excited to see what comes of this.
Very interesting video and a great soundtrack , great work..🪚
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it.
Wow. 2 of my best things ,boats and fiddles.. perfect 🎉. Thank u sir .
Hope you enjoy!
Love that my connection to Tally Ho introduced me to your work! Amazing craftsmanship and hey who wouldn’t want a custom fiddle made from the same timber as one’s boat! Nice.
Thanks so much! Im glad you found me on here.
What an awesome gift. Love the idea. Can't wait to see more
Thanks so much!
I too follow Tally Ho. Several others in fact. Tally Ho is very interesting videos. The acorn to arabella is interesting also. Arabella was just launched several weeks ago. Salt and Tar is another build I watched. These are all great to watch.
There are just too many cool projects out there!
I been following Leo on his channel as a passive viewer since the beginning of the rebuild of Tally Ho. I think its awesome what your doing and can't wait to se the end result. Cheers from DK and can't help myself for saying fiddle diddley doo, what a nice videoo..
Thanks so much! I appreciate it!
What a great companion project for Tally Ho watchers. Live long and prosper fiddle guy! Love the pacing and terse commentary combined with timelapse. It reminds me of Leo.
I appreciate it! Thanks.
Making a fiddle for Tally Ho part 3?? Well, what happened to parts one and two?? Oh, there they are! On to part two! Huge fan of everything Leo has been doing for years. He's come so far!!
Glad you found them!
Excellent craftsmanship!
I appreciate it. Thank you.
Fast subscribed, your channel seems great, time for a deep dive!!!
haha! thanks, enjoy. If you like these you would like the tea kettle banjo build videos.
Awesome ❤❤❤
very cool way to contribute with a tribute ! realy enjoyed your work and the background music was nice .
Thanks so much. It has been a fun project to share!
Impressive work, impressive video. Joy to watch
Thanks so much! Im glad you are enjoying them
Excellent!!
Thanks!
Wow, that's some fiddley work.
Okay, I'll see myself out now.
haha That's great.
As a long time viewer & contributor of the Tally Ho project & having made a few instruments myself, I look forward to see how this turns out! 👍👍🎸🎸 You have a new subscriber!
Thanks so much! I appreciate it. So what kind of instruments have you made?
Fascinating! Thank you for the video.
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes it is such a fascinating process. So much more involved than I thought before making them.
Subscribed, love the music and the video style. Great work!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it.
This is absolutely fascinating. The heating iron with the progressive curve and strap to steam bend the pieces was, indeed, a revelation. The camera angles really let me follow the process without having to guess what you were doing.
I've worked with many mediums for over 50 years and this was really intriguing. Thank you!
Thanks so much I really appreciate that. As a one person shop it is nice to hear that you like the camera work.
@@JDanielGraham I've got ~650 videos on here, many instructional, and that's what I have tried to do.
Thank you Daniel for taking this on. I am now imagining a guitar, double bass, banjo, flute and recorders also being made from the materials to produce a set of instruments that Wayward Jane could play their beautiful song September onboard Tally Ho.
I know I can get a banjo done by then if he wants one! That would be amazing.
A craftsmanship quality on par with what Leo an his team do for Tally Ho, it should be a great companion to the whole project. As a budding guitar luthier I also appreciate the insight into the complex world of violin making. Will be following along the whole process
Thanks so much for those words. It's awesome that you are stepping into guitar making! so fun
Just stumbed upon this video (via Tally Ho of course) and it's fascinating. Loved watching the process, thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching I hope you enjoy watching it come together.
I've been following Leo's work on Tally Ho for 2-3 years from my sofa in Bartlett, TN. The fellow has phenomenal woodworking skills.
Yeah his woodworking, persistence, and drive are top notch.
All things tally ho are always great I’m so grateful for tally Ho and everything attached great Contant .I was told by a fiddle player the difference between a fiddle and violin is a violin was never dropped
haha!! thats great.
Mean!
This was a completely fortuitous find!! Rally Ho captivated me from the very beginning - such a monumental task undertaken by a extraordinary group of people led by Leo Sampson. It has developed an almost cult following due to the level of drive and unerring attention to detail and quality. Your work seems to fit with this mindset - bravo!! Fiddles are indelibly part of the maritime narrative - what a brilliant idea to compliment an important project. I'll definitely be following the TH fiddle construction.
Tally Ho captivated me
Thanks so much! Tally Ho is such a great project I am excited to be connected with it. Thanks for watching.
That finger hammer! 😮 ❤❤❤❤❤
Haha glad you like that.
OMG!!! A Ky. connection. I, like you have followed Leo from the start. GREAT work and I can’t believe part of Tally Ho is in KY. I’m in Frankfort and I can feel the vibe😂
Awesome!! I'm in Georgetown, we are like 20 min away from each other. If you ever want to come visit my shop just let me know.
Hey amazing job, you do a great job of showing the painstaking process of doing the job, I find it so easy to watch people make things look quick and easy on UA-cam, something about your video style shows your skill and the time that goes into this. I love it, thankyou
I really appreciate that! Yeah I like the long haul processes but it is a hard balance between oversharing and making a 200 hour video or making it too breezy and missing too much.
What a great video! I can wait to see Leo's face when he gets this in the mail!
I would love to see him unbox it!
I'm digging the soundtrack!!!!!
Im so glad. Make sure to check out his whole album it is great.
I love the music!
New viewer and subscriber today. I been following Leo's channel, so of course your channel popped up. And as a former violin player (I'm old now with arthritis, so can't play worth anything anymore), I find it fascinating to watch a skilled builder put together a new fiddle from the beginning...and using cutoffs from the Tally Ho! Great stuff. Thanks for taking the time to video and share this project.
Thanks I appreciate it! Im sorry violin playing is over for you. I have a mom that is a craftsperson with rheumatoid arthritis, I know what it is like to close a chapter like that.
Love this. There is a joy in using and even watching others using hand tools. Thirty years ago I was so wanting a side rebate plane and paid what I thought was a fortune for a new Record side rebate plane-no regrets, such a good tool.
I feel the same way! A good tool is worth a lot. A tool that does a good job and you enjoy using is worth its weight in gold.
amazing!!!. I have been watching Leo since day one and I am a fiddle player myself. What a wonderful idea
wonderful!! Thanks for following along. The Tally Ho project is such a cool one and has some real fun parallels to instrument making.
Great video Daniel! Looking forward to the next one.
They will be coming out faster than it took to make them haha. It took about 3 months to make the fiddle but I'm going to post the videos about one each week.
This is a perfect fit for Tally Ho. Apart from sea shantys and hornpipes for the crew's entertainment a fiddler was often employed on square riggers of the 18th and 19th centuries to time the hauling of sheets and braces and capstan winding to weigh anchor in a timely manner, especially in the British Navy warships of that era. This will be an important part of Tally Ho's sailing equipment.
WOW how cool I didnt know that. Thanks for sharing!
There absolutely is a difference between a fiddle and a violin. It's the nut that holds the bow!
Great combination of project concept, craftsmanship, video making and music selection.
Glad you like it all! thanks!
I had no idea of the work involved in making a violin and probably never would have without the Tally Ho connection. These projects have given me a new appreciation for craftsmanship. That tiny plane is adorable!
Im so glad you can appreciate it! and yes it is so adorable!!
As an original follower of Leo's Tally Ho, I find watching JDG's work very enjoyable, and a great complimentary channel to watch. Mike 🇦🇺
thanks so much
Here from the Tally Ho channel... Subscribed.
Awesome! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch.
On the difference between a violin and a fiddle:
True story.
Question in a physics test:
If the bow is moved twice as fast across the strings:
*The sound gets higher in pitch
*The sound gets louder
* The sound stays the same
Write in answer that got an extra point by the teacher:
"The violin turns into a fiddle"
HAHA that's awesome! love that
Such an interesting and informative video. Can't wait for the next one. Fine work (in both senses)!
Four of them are up as now but more coming.
What a cool project! I've been watching Tally Ho from the start. We're practically neighbors as we live in Elizabethtown.
That's awesome. Im all the way in Kentucky or else I would have love to help out when he was taking volunteers.
Uuuuuh what a treat! I have also been following along Leo and the team since the start.. Plus I love watching Luthiers and such (Crimson guitars comes to mind) .. So when this popped up in my feed I was pumped! Also got a little chuckle at the start when you were filing down the side supports and I said to myself; Hey, thats a Iwasaki carving file!
Cant wait to watch this project, looks awesome! Keep it up!
Im glad you are watching and Yes it is an Iwasaki file! Hope you enjoy the rest of the series.
Hi Daniel! I do NOT forgive your clock -- because it has done nothing to require forgiveness! It sounded absolutely lovely!
It is my great good fortune to live in -- ok just outside of -- Port Townsend Washington, home of not only Tally Ho but the annual Festival of American Fiddle Tunes! I drive through the boatyard every time I'm in town and sometimes am fortunate enough to see Tally Ho when the door is open. Come visit us some time!
Thanks so much for that. I have actually thought about delivering it vs mailing it but I dont want to be an imposition. I didnt even know they had a festival of american fiddle tunes! How fun! I would love to get out there at some point it finances allow it.
What a lovely sentiment to engage in. Well done you….recognising the determination and commitment of another craftsman…and contributing to re-incarnation of raw materials into something just a equally beautiful as the source of origin.
Thank you so much for the kind words! That really means a lot.
Wonderful project ! Good for you.
Thanks so much!
This is the first time I saw a fiddle being built. Your iron forms the sides and their shape transforms them from delicate strips to rock solid frames. I want to learn more.
It is such a fun process. I will be sharing more process videos of the project for sure. I did an apprenticeship to learn the craft. So many steps and things to learn.
what a tremendously beautiful thing. I was intrigued by the woodwork that has gone on with the ship project, but as they say, you had me at Violin / Fiddle. I have never seen this process before, and I find it absolutely amazing. Sub'd, commented, liked.
So glad you have enjoyed it! It has been fun to make the videos for you all.
What an awesome initiative. You are skilled in the process and creation and the pace and explanation of the process is perfect.
I'm amazed at the skills attached to this.
Thanks so much! Yeah it is a whole other world of process and information. Thanks for watching.
Very interesting. As a long time Tally Ho supporter, really enjoyed this artisan’s contribution.
Thanks so much! Tally Ho has been so great to watch it's the least I could do.
Just found your Channel. I to have been watching Leo restore this very beautiful boat. I have enjoyed it very much it helped with the boredness of the pandemic stay home bit. I've always wanted to make my own violin but I guess I could say I'm too chicken to do so LOL. Watching you do this with this violin I don't think I'd be so shy at doing it now. With Leo deals with with this crew working on the boat he needs more of cello because of the comedy humor he has to deal with and the boulder dash lol I find it really funny the humor the day the dude was cutting the door out of the boat I thought he was serious LOL. I think you need to make a lot of his crew walk the plank LOL. surprised they don't carve him a peg leg give him an eye patch he's already got the bird when he's there LOL just needs facial hair LOL. With your Channel and making of the violin Feed me more. The bigger the better. I can't wait for the final of the violin for tally ho. Thank you for sharing your wonderful skill and craftsmanship. Thank you and God bless
Leo can cut a bunch of holes in it and put dials and meters for the power system in it…and call it an “Instrument Panel”! (Ba-dump! Chsh!)
A violin has four strings and a fiddle has five. A violin gets put away very carefully in its case for safe keeping and a fiddle has a fifth string so as to hang it on the wall.
haha!!!
Excellent - subscribed. Very good production values.👍
Oh thanks! It's just me and a camera, so I really appreciate that.
Thanks Daniel..you have amazing talents! Can you play the fiddle?.. if so, maybe on a Tally Ho cruise, sometime in the future!
That would be awesome. I am a banjo player but I am starting to learn to play the fiddle this year.
Very cool gesture mate very cool!!!
Thanks so much!
