100. Rebuilding Tally Ho - UP TO NOW! (Traditional Boatbuilding / EP100)
Leo you always say that you're a boatbuilder and a sailor, but you never mention that you're an artist and a filmmaker, which is just as true, and perhaps even more true these past few years. This is one of the most extraordinary and beautiful filmed documentaries ever made, and you will be recognised long into the future not only for Tally Ho, but for this saga.
And clearly a fantastic boss, the kind of person you're glad to work for.
Very well stated. Add me to the list of likeminded watchers.
Leo, boatbuilder, sailor, filmmaker, artist, manager, leader and dreamer.
Honestly at the tail end of this you could sell the footage to Discovery or History and build a made for TV series, not sure you would want to do this but I could certainly see it making a fantastic multipart documentary series
Have enjoyed these videos for four years Leo, keep them coming, they such works of art. For those of us who love boats and craftsmanship, these videos are a real tonic. Then when she finally splashes and you raise her sails, with luck there will be enough support to help sponsor her voyages. Bravo.
The Tally Ho series has to be one of the most interesting and genuinely impressive bits of content on UA-cam, dare I say the internet as a whole. Its attributes extend well beyond boats and woodworking, as does its value.
I think there's so much idealistic fervor, self-reliance, constructive and creative spirit, historical piety and simple human good cheer concentrated in one place, it's a beauty to behold.
amen !!!
What he said!
I am 76, an old shipwrigt and a boatbuilder. It makes my long for bygone days. New ways & methods. Appreciate this very much. Thank You for sharing..
Imagine building this boat back in the day. No cordless drills, no power tools... It must have been incredible
Lots of people and budget I'm sure though
Slaves, bruh.
Lots and lots of slaves.
@@DiarrheaBubbles true
@@DiarrheaBubbles Britain barely had any slaves as a % of the population, Not only that but they were unskilled labor not master carpenters. Even worse, this boat was build when there were no slaves of any kind at all. People today are to lazy to imagine crews working with manual tools . The "lots of slaves" comment is the pinnacle of ignorance and a bad education system. Disgusting
@@acsiata Bro don't be that guy. Stop watching IDW videos.
Leo always says he is grateful for what we give to him, but he never mentions what he gives to us. A very humble man.
He is inspiring!
Agree entirely thank you Leo
Same here. Thank you Leo for being who you are. You are a role model to me and to many. I will keep that small Tally Ho wood shaving I picked up on your project site as a precious memorabilia.
You are absolutely correct 👍
No true words have spoken. I have probably randomly watched a half a dozen videos or more, but each time my jaw is literally on the floor. I can't believe one person can dream up a project this big and coordinate all of the parts of this project.
What you're doing is unbelievable and extremely worthwhile project not just historically but it's very motivational. Thank you Leo for what you're doing. 👍
Sir, you have given way more to us then we could ever give to you! Truly, you have breathed life in to a boat that has a soul and have restored my faith in a younger generation that can show that they to can learn a great skill and use it to create something beautiful. Thank you Leo.
I would like to second that, the sheer determination, skill and just plain pleasantness of Leo and the crew he has assembled, makes old guys like me feel better about the future. I watch each episode with fascination. Hope the change bodes well for the future.
I completely agree. I so appreciate the time you spend giving, as I could never repay. Thank you Leo.
Comment of the day right there. Well said Mr.T
Not sure if you'll ever see this comment Leo since I'm posting on a video you made two years ago. I just recently came across your channel and have been binge watching for the last two weeks. I know you already have Tally Ho in the water, but I've been trying not cheat and watch those video's, kinda like not wanting to skip to the last chapter of a really good book. All I wanted to say is I think this journey after watching half of it, is so much more than rebuilding an old boat. I think it's more about all the people you've inspired, brought together and have come to help you. In the movie Field of Dreams, Kevin Costners character kept on hearing a voice say," if you build it, they will come"! I think that's what you've accomplished even though that's probably not what you originally intended. You entertained people from all around the world, inspired us in our own projects, maybe influenced someone to become a sailor or boat builder and of course all the volunteers that came from near and far to contribute to Tally Ho. I look forward to catching up to your most recent video's in the next couple of weeks. Hopefully you'll sail somewhere close by so I can come and see Tally Ho in person. Until then, fair winds and following seas!
My dad and I built a 17-foot wooden sailboat back in the seventies when I was a kid. (Correction: I watched him build and handed him the tools) He was a carpenter by training and had never built a boat before but decided to try it. He ordered some plans through the mail and went to work. We spent fifteen years sailing around the Chesapeake before he finally sold it and I went off to college. Seeing your work on this boat made me feel like I was watching him all over again...Thanks.
Leo, it’s no surprise to the tens of thousands of us who watch and support your project. You have an outstanding personality and boyish charm that lends itself to warm our hearts. I’m so impressed you opened your project to others who have loved to come lay a helping hand on Tally Ho. Best of luck in your coming move. We of course will continue to watch your progress. Thank you!
congrats on 4 years, i've been here the whole way through, i personally don't expect recognition from youtubers i watch but your interaction with your community is unique and deeply tied with your community, i hope for another successful 2 years of boat building and 100+ more episodes :) don't stay up too late making your next video leo

Pure genius, using an old boat as a template to build a new boat. Tally Ho!!!! Michael
The heavy timber join at 7:39 has to be one of the most satisfying scenes in this whole build. Such accuracy on such a grand scale is the picture that's worth a thousand words and speaks volumes about the respect for the ship that's been present all through the restoration. That kind of passion and respect for the soul of this craft is what I love to see being made real from all of your and your crew's hard work. As always, thanks for allowing us to go on this adventure along with you!
This is the sort of reality TV people actually want.
Yes maybe but I really feel it’s more of a real person TV.. Either way u look at it this Vlog proves Dreams do come true!!
The word "reality TV" is a bit of a misnomer, total quality content and unmissable.
This kind of wonderful content really makes it obvious what garbage we, as the masses are being force fed by the main stream media.
It really is
Agreed. This is the type of channel a lot of people are interested in. You may want to argument your video camera and editing to volunteers who don’t have the carpentry and boat building skills but have those skills. Just a thought.
Tears in my eyes Leo. This boat stirs something in my soul, and you gave me ownership just because I like and comment and share. Means a lot.
Very nicely put; I completely agree.
well said, Sir.
Me too
but believe me, it feels even better when you contribute a little cash too
I know it may seem like a lifetime, and yet in retrospect, yes, it has only been a mere 4 years since we chatted online about your future aspirations for Tally Ho. It was back in the early days of this channel, well before many folks had found it. Leo, I am in awe when I think about what you have accomplished. You've made yourself into a world-class, credentialed shipwright, wooden boat builder, artisan, historian and craftsman of the first water. You have managed to create several soon to be six figure businesses, or possibly a non-profit floating marine biology école ou deux, once again created out of thin air, that only a vagabond dreamer and true romantic would have the sheer imagination and courage to have taken on without any fear of failure or expectations of success.
Success has always been a given with you, Leo. People just know it. We have always accepted it as fact, and in listening to you six months ago, back here in Sequim as you were getting ready to transition over to Port Townsend, you speak of leaving it all behind when you've finished with fulfilling your personal commitment to the Albert Strange Association, all in pursuit of the next great adventure. And dammit, I believe you.
As a General Contractor and finish carpenter I can appreciate the amount of labor, blood, sweat and tears involved in this build. You are most definitely insane... keep up the good work !
I started watching back in november 2020, binged through the whole playlist even though I know close to nothing about boats. Honestly, this whole project has been fascinating and I loved every minute spent watching the progress.
Exactly the same here, had a blast getting up to this point.
Me too Joey, lovin this journey learning all the way, amazing crew.
Ditto
Add me to the 'late to the party' list. Ran across this about the same time (Oct/Nov '20) and binged getting up to date. Now a weekly must see, with occasionally backing up a week or two to refresh continuity. Heartfelt thanks to Leo, all his local crews, and to all the folks here that truly make up a community.
Got to see this on the 3rd episode and been hooked ever since.
t=15:00 "Trapped in this amazing prison of my own making..." Classic.
Everyone is trapped in a prison of their own making.
@@chazarkansas1366 There is an opportunity cost to living the dream. Be careful what you wish for.
Keep in mind that at any time you can walk away if your health requires it or other responsibilities beckon. We do not insist on you continuing this to the end or even require it. No human life is less valuable than an object made by human hands.
I am a little confused though. Unlike most other jobs, we don't mind if the videos are a little slower or shorter, and Leo could hire an editor to get his extra nights sleep. Surely he must have realised this himself if it is at all possible. And I don't see why it wouldn't be.
This channel often goes for the highest quality in everything from little details in the boatbuilding to little details in the video. I deeply hope that Leo doesn't feel pressure to keep up being perfect. We like the project, even if the videos are a little bit less perfect. Yes we will be sad when a video doesn't come out as planned, but what are we going to do?, nonwatch the video and unsubscribe from the channel in protest, hell no, we like the project too much for that.
If you happen to be Leo and you are reading this. Know that you are allowed to make mistakes. You are allowed to struggle. You are allowed to be less perfect sometimes. You are allowed to give yourself some slack.
@@nielskorpel8860 Thanks dude. Whenever I've let other people edit the videos, although they do a great job, it just doesn't feel quite right. But being a perfectionist is one of my biggest faults, I am working on trying to let things go!
I can only offer moral support, but Leo ou need to kno you are a big part of many people's lives as we muddle through 2020 and 2021 in particular. May the move to PT go smoothly. I think it will create a new energy for you in that setting. Good times ahead.
This is the sort of reality TV people actually want.. Невероятное количество труда! Потрясающий результат! Герои!.
This the most fascinating video series i have ever seen, who knew i was a closet boat builder, you are truly an inspiring person
I thought you handled the whole county controversy in a very positive and mature way. You set a great example of how to resolve a complicated conflict.
My wife and I built a boat ourselves. Two things come to mind after watching your videos. 1) There will always be naysayers and negative Nellie's. Ignore them. They bring no good energy to your endeavors. 2) Your craftsmanship is incredible! I could only dream of making those joints on our boat!
Keep up the great work. Love the videos. Team Gullickson
Leo, you're a living legend. I am constantly shocked by your progress and your ability to film and edit these videos. From one video creator to a video legend: well done!
Congrats on 100 episodes!
the reason so many are here, are there, are along for the ride is due to YOU. you are worth watching, worth listening to. through your videos we get to live this dream too. thank YOU Leo.
Greetings from Greece! Have no words ... Great ... the whole story! Great respect for taking your life in your hands! God bless you!!
I just love good craftmanship. Seeing parts put together fitting perfectly puts a smile on my face!
For those who haven't, you should go to Leo's web page and read the stories of his adventures before Tally Ho. You'll find he's a pretty good writer in addition to his other talents.
I am moved by this remarkable and inspirational young man and all of the values and ethics he represents!!!
I absolutely agree. Watch the episode where he talks about the complaining neighbor and the county letters. His positive attitude, forward thinking, understanding of where everyone is coming from and acceptance of what may transpire, he is truly a man for everyone to try and be like. I've known a few men in my life like Leo, but they very few. He's inspiring to watch at all levels.
This is just bloody amazing to watch. I can't believe how far this has come. An impressively daunting project to take on, but it's looking so incredible so far. Simply outstanding.
Britain's best UA-cam channel ...truth
Is it just me or does this feel like a big family and we are all raising a kid (Tally Ho of course!)?
I've never felt so close to a project from such a distance. I often wonder where the magic comes from. Is it the insane commitment? The beautiful editing? The incredible people we've met along the way? Tally-ho is the traditional cry made by the huntsman to tell others the quarry has been sighted. Maybe her quarry was to bring us all together. Talley Ho!
My trade is Diesel Mechanics, and Im an amateur carpenter. This is my all time favorite master builder series. I don't need a reply to validate myself. As a Master from another trade, I simply wish to express my Admiration and Respect for your work.
An excellent summary Leo. A documented history of the first four years. Local and foreign public broadcasters would love shows like this. Keep it up!! It is worthy of all the donations that we give.
I can't believe it's been 4 years. In that time I've separated from my wife of 30 years, my children have left home and returned to live when things haven't worked out, I fallen in love again and been broken hearted. I've worked hard, had a motorcycle accident, lost friends. And throughout it all I can honestly say that these videos have sustained me and filled me with wonder and joy. Thank you Leo
Cheers from a kindred spirit!
Yes, you are lucky to be doing what you love. But never put your well-being in second place. Your feelings are valid and overworking yourself is a very real problem regardless of whether it’s work you hate or work you love! Btw, I grew up in rural Somerset too!
I’m an old guy and a carpenter and I’m in awe. !!!
We went to view "Tally Ho" in Brookings, Oregon when the owner's divorce was happening and it was too much for us. So glad you took on the project, Leo.
Leo you are an inspiration. This project has far-reaching consequences and has inspired and influenced great numbers of people. I myself have turbocharged my own boat projects having watched a good portion of your content. It is also refreshing to see young people not obsessing over writing code and other typical career paths. Fortune favors the brave. Well done sir.
Wow. From Argentina following this project, 4 years... Congratulations, the effort and inspiration is amazing. I have just pass my captain licence
Congratulations!!
Man youtube's recommendations killed it today. Gained a new sub and I have a LOT of videos to watch! Incredible.
Leo, your humility and honesty speaks loudly....and no doubt is and has been why you have such a wonderful community of support and true life long shared experiences with so many.I have watched your videos from the very beginning, with admiration ,for your pursuit and talent in making a dream come to life ,for yourself and so many others.
While I only see the videos ,I truly love to hear your personal experience, because it speaks to me of your honor and love for what you are creating with the shared love of so many.Thank you
Congrats on 100. As one of many retired old guys that live in Sequim, I look at you as sort of a surrogate son. Hope the move goes smooth. Cheers!
Bigfoot is your neighbor.
This UA-cam channel one can regard as a course for life. Learning, perseverance, craftsmanship team building etc. It is all in the game here and fun. I wish I could join and help.
When you are in season 3 and sailing you will find lots of interesting and grateful people at each of your destinations. And find new ambitions you will fulfill.
My level of English is not sufficient to tell you all the admiration I have for all the work you have already done !
Félicitations et merci
You have built a dream from a piece of history. Your drive and dedication are an example to other young people. One comment please call your boat "Her" not "It"
Leo and the team are legends. I so look forward to Saturdays.
Am I the only one who feels a bit guilty hearing Leo thank me for watching his videos? I assure you, the reasons I watch these are entirely selfish: I enjoy them! Yes, I understand views help generate revenue, which in turn help fund the project, but the only reason a person with only a passing interest in woodworking and sailing would watch 100 of these things is because they are interesting, entertaining, and excellently produced. Looking forward to the next 100 videos!
So true!

Leo, You are not just a boat builder and sailor, you are a great leader . Amazing energy in allot of directions with an amazing out come.
Leo & Team (present & past) you have gifted us all with this stunning adventure of yours. It's so rare to find that there are people like you; very young and so grounded and established in himself and his gifts that you share willingly with us all. Thank You so much ❤️
What a joy it would be to see Tally Ho, Sail Cargo, Arabella (Acorn to Arabella), Red Aviva (Salt and Tar) the Sea Dreamer (5 points woodworks) as well as some of the other great wooden boats together in an armada. The wooden boats need to be on the sea together at least one time to show this type of vessel is as viable for sea cruising as any of the modern designs and materials. There is something magical about wooden sailing vessels that needs to be kept alive and thriving. Wooden boats contain the DNA of their builders. Each and every drop of sweat and at times blood that drops and is absorbed in the wood leaves their DNA behind. It's a very true statement when Leo said "they are all part of this boat".
and Finn's boat!
Years ago I was at Tall Ships in the NY Harbor such a glorious memory!!
Just imagine all the wooden ships of UA-cam in that same Harbor..
Thanks for the thought…
It is amazing how much of Tally Ho has been thrown away, and now MUCH of her spirit stayed on. Timbers may rot, Tally Ho is still here!
Strange how time has flown, and we are here now, seeing her in her white and brightred livery. Before we know it she wil have her rigging up, and water under her keel.
This is absolutely the best video I have ever watched on youtube.
Authenticity and historical thoughts are hard to come up with “correct” answers. My take has always been that the vessel would most likely be one of the lost ones that are scrapped or destroyed and in rebuilding and making changes for the longevity of the vessel your just adding to the history. I would love to see an old wooden vessel that hasn’t been changed in some way since it was first built. Ship building is both a science and a fine artwork.
Look at you! Stand up Leo, take a well-deserved bow. When I first heard of your plan years ago, I thought you were nuts. Apparently, one's good mental health was no a pre-requisite to success. Congratulations to you and the team!
Leo, aside from the entertainment that this series provides, you are an inspirational force.
Once you had resolved the move in your mind, you grasp the potential and let it energize you.
Thank you for sharing this story. I look forward to season 2 and 3.
Powerful video Leo. Thanks for the look back. Having seen it all from the start, there was much that I had forgotten. So glad I found this channel and for you putting it out there for the world to see.
Holy resume! I knew you were smart, but wow...lol. Thank you for what you are doing, now and in the future. "Your efforts, so far as one man can deliver, will help sustain boat building well into the next century"
Can't wait for the "everyone is invited" launch party!
If he ever dus have that launch party I hope it's in the biggest boat yard in port townsant he would need it I would love to be there!
One person who absolutely must be invited is Steve Cross, the Live Oak guy from GA. Such a knowledgeable, gentle, clever man you would struggle to find, oh, and his wonderful accent.
Leo, regarding sustainable forestry, check out Shelmore Timber in Staffordshire. Their model of growth and use is, I think exactly what you're aiming at. I bought some oak for a table commission, growing tree to sawmill to my garage, no more than 40 'furniture miles'. Worth a dose of looking at.
Leo, we are the ones blessed every couple of weeks to get to see the beautiful work. We get to see the teamwork, friendships and the love of craft documented. Thank you for including so many people in the adventure.
I’m a woodworker myself , and I love seeing the craftsmanship that goes into tally Ho it’s amazing .you all are so very talented people!!
thank all of you!!! for making this build fantastic !!! i work so many hours as a millwright , i dont get time to watch every video these days ... your project leo is fantastic!!!!! i hope it continues !!!!!! if i had a break in work i would love to come when the drive train would be installed !!! let me know ...
This has been an incredible journey, and has made me appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into wood boats even more. We're all looking forward to the next stages of the build at the new location!

"Oh no, is the video over already?"
Reflection is food for the soul.
A wonderful summation of the last four years - and a frank discussion of what's ahead and what on-going challenges there are. I wish that Leo had that non-profit in place for Tally Ho. I think there are many people here that could donate larger sums than Patreon subscriptions to Leo's bank account, which would help to assure that funding becomes less of an issue in the near term.
Sir, I love working with timber our timber in NZ are a lot different. But in my 70 years I like your master class in working timber
Please try to come to Tasmania, Australia Leo because I would love to see Tally Ho in the flesh. I have been following your progress from the very first video. Your videos are inspirational to all who have or are considering a restoration of any kind. I have restored/rebuilt a car and swore I would never do it again (and I thought I would never finish it) but now I find myself wanting to do it once more. I think once you have the "bug" it never leaves you. Keep up the great work you are doing.
I am watching this from high up in a valley in the heart of the French countryside. It was really interesting to hear your background and how you'd arrived at Tally Ho. Thank you for sharing, am enjoying every minute.

Hat's off to Pete and the entire crew! I am so excited to watch the rest of the restoration. If I was forty years younger I would be there to help out.
This video should be nominated for some kind of international award. If I figure out what that is I will do it myself.
The only thing I watch on TV apart from 18 Footers TV, Sail GP & America's Cup! Oh, and Randy Cunningham's Banging The Corners
I've been watching around 1 year or a little more. I've found the time to catch up on all the episodes and the side videos. I have no real affinity for boats or sailing. It's just great to watch a genius at work.
Poncho really needs to be there every so often for a safety inspection.
Thank you I can never remember
Ponchos name and I look forward to his unrehearsed weekly appearances.
Poncho was probably more qualified for safety inspections than the county.
Inspector Pancho is always keen for a bit of destructive testing to ensure Leo’s only using top quality materials!
The middle of January, 2022 with Tally Ho nestled in its home in Port Townsend and I've been reflecting back on this amazing journey I've followed from the beginning. I didn't watch this video when it was released so it was fun watching it now. To my mind, this is the finest channel on UA-cam. The craftsmanship in rebuilding this fine sailing boat calls for attention and appreciation but it is the community of people devoted to this effort that raises it above other similar projects. That Leo is talented and dedicated certainly counts for much. His videos keep us involved. It isn't surprising that viewers feel committed. I wrote a letter to the county when the dispute with the neighbor was coming to a head and also wrote a check. Given how much pleasure I take from these videos it probably makes sense to become a patron as well. There is NOTHING on television I'd rather watch that one of Leo's videos whether he is capturing the polishing of brass knees or faring the hull with torture boards or celebrating the whisky plank. Amazing journey. Thanks Leo and thanks to all the folks working so hard to make this happen.
I am a MASSIVE fan of all your videos. Your professionalism and leadership is way above the rest of the wood boat construction. Thanks to you for raising my passion for sailing vessels.
i think i’ve been watching since the 5th video. i remember thinking that the old boat was basically firewood and i was wondering what this wild haired, romantic, british guy was up to. if he had any notion of the situation he was putting himself into. i’m happy to say that he’s been more than capable all along. i’ve never been a boat builder but i’ve been a carpenter and worked in construction my whole adult life and i could at least have some references to what was going to be involved with the scope of this project. it’s been a great experience even for just another viewer and subscriber to this adventure and i can’t even count how many times i’ve gotten misty eyed by the emotion of it all. i’m happy for leo and crew and if it was feasible i’d love to contribute more in whatever way. so thank you, leo. thank you for this experience. i know that there are many, many others like me who take a little time to relax and enjoy a half hour or so with you and your vessel’s rebirth every couple weeks. it is a luxury but a worthwhile one for me and i take comfort in sitting on my sofa watching sharp chisels and happy parrots working to put a dream back out to sea. my best wishes to you and your crew and your beautiful tally ho!
If there is another UA-cam project, Building a boat of this quality, in as proficient a fashion, I haven't seen it. Thanks for taking the trouble to make the videos so watchable too.
Check out Acorn to Arabella.
@@michaelvangundy226 Oh A2A is certainly on my list of YT boat builds, that are required viewing. Steve and Alix are an admirable pair of resourceful guys who will build a fine craft. However, the wheels came off with a tortuous planking process in contrast to Leo's flawless lining off. This is just the difference experience makes and as I have already said Arabella will be an exceptional boat in the end.
Well if is anything like home owners building their own it is about to screech to a halt. They look at homes as when it's dried in it's almost done. But the truth is closer to 25% complete.

Even though we will not be ever able to sail the blue. This boat has so many sailing with her. She will never be at a port where someone will come to say hello..Even though I live 2200 feet up like many others. Far from the ocean. We will follow every creak wind sound in the shrouds. .Well done.
It's good to see Finn in these recap scenes. I miss seeing him there helping you. It'd be such an amazing thing to have you, Pete, and Finn there together.
It was a laugh seeing him with short hair too. His boat is coming along slowly, he's seems to be doing ok.

Although there are many people who support and make possible what it is you are doing, do not under estimate the value of what you are bringing to us, your community, in return. Your passion, craftsmanship, patience, humility, graciousness and tutelage are an inspiration and ever present reminder of the beauty in life. Everything that has been given or donated in support of this project has been earn many times over through the journey and experience you having been willing to share with us. Thank you!
This video, by itself, is better than any single thing on Netflix, cable tv, public access, etc.
May the algorithm bless you with good viewership and exposure. Godspeed!
Not all that long ago, a few hundred years, what you're doing would have been a normal day at work for some. Today it is very much a lost and dying art that you're helping keep alive. I can say with One Hundred Percent certainty that only a select few will ever accomplish something as monumental as to what you have and are in their life times. It is truly astonishing for lack of a better word. I truly wish you nothing but the best moving forward. May you forever have fair winds, safe travels and the Lord's Blessings. God Bless sir, God Bless...
