- For a few years around the turn of the century, Julia Stiles was one of the biggest names in Hollywood, particularly in the teen movie circuit. Her role in the 1999 film, 10 Things I Hate About You, made her a household name, and she followed it with a string of successful flicks, including a recurring role as Nicolette “Nicky” Parsons in the popular Jason Bourne franchise of action thrillers.
These days, however, Stiles hasn’t been getting the lead roles she once was, leading many who grew up with her movies to wonder what happened. Let’s take a look at why Hollywood hasn’t been casting Julia Stiles as much recently.

Heath Ledger would never have been considered weird or overrated pre Dark Knight. That film and his performance just amplified his legacy. He was talented in other roles though.

Did it ever occur to you guys that those films failed because they had shitty scripts? Or they weren't properly promoted? How is Stiles single handedly responsible for the failure of a movie with dozens of people involved in it? And Mona Lisa smile was a great movie. Perhaps it is less interesting if you aren't into art but I thought it was a great movie.

She's a great actor, she just ended up in some bad movies and that was the fault of directors, writers, etc.
Julia Stiles is talented and I like her very much. Many of the movies she has been in, however, failed due to poor writing, production, and/or marketing. Movies are the ultimate collaborative effort. Their success or failure are usually due to many factors. The lead actors wrongly get blame or credit.

Julia Stiles continues to be cast in Hollywood. Just because she isn't in a major headlining role in a movie doesn't mean she isn't getting work. She continues to be cast every year in various films and TV series projects.

I guess it depends on what kinda movies you like to watch. If you like action movies better then she'll probably always be Nicky Parsons from the Bourne series to you. Me, I mostly remember her from The Omen and Dexter, because those are more my genre of movies/series.

I think she is quite underrated actually. She just needs more definitive roles like earlier on in her career, but I actually don’t mind her being in the shadows either. I like underdogs. She’ll probably come up with a good leading role in the future, hopefully get nominated for an award and get more roles again.

And yet she's a talented actress as she showed in Dexter. I think in Stiles' case "Hollywood not casting anymore" probably boils down to her making choices that aren't based on box office receipts. Can audiences honestly say that box office blockbusters = great acting or great plots? They don't. They're like fast food - designed to appeal to as many people as possible in as short a time as possible. For every Beyonce and Jennifer Lawrence (who I like) there's a Jennifer Hudson and Julia Stiles making choices that aren't solely based on making money.

Actors: if you're cast for anything else than your talent at the beginning of your career, then time is your enemy.
And if you're a woman, time can often be your enemy ANYWAY as Hollywood doesn't really want to cast older women in good roles for some reason.

***** Well joke or not a sequel to something like this without Heath Ledger is still a tough sell to audience. I understand that it was a joke but sequel with a whole new cast generally don't do well with audiences who are fans of the original. The Ten things TV show is a great example of that if anyone remembers that. But I can be wrong, however this is all just a what if sinario.

my friends & I use to see her around NYC when she attended Columbia - we always joked that she looked like a white female version of Wayne Brady but all jokes aside she is a phenomenal actress and growing up I thought she would be our Merly Streep or Glenn Close....I think her time will come around again- shes not done.

Box office bombs can't be laid at her feet. No one has ever "opened" movie with Julia Stiles as the "bankable" crowd pleaser. It sounds more like she needed to change her agent a long time ago who could create buzz about her to work with better material and probably better production and directing talent. There are so many variables that go into making a "blockbuster" but laying it Stiles feet isn't the reason.

I don't understand why she isn't in more films and series. She is a great actress and is absolutely beautiful. I loved her in Dexter and she nailed that part. Seeing her in anything makes me want to watch it more. I guess I can just relate to how she portrays her characters, or maybe its because I have had a crush on her for a long time. Hell don't we all have a crush on someone. ;-)

I thought that the end of Dexter, when he was sitting in the diner alone in the lumberjack get up, the camera would have panned out, and Lumen would be there. That would have been so awesome.
I met Julia in a Trader Joe's Store once...she initiated the conversation, too. What a truly genuinely down to earth person with a lot going for her...She is America's #1 Sweetheart for sure!!!
Movies get big because the actors in it looked great. That's unfortunate, but that's what wins fans, awards, etc. She looked amazing in 10 Things I Hate About You, but in more recent films, she hasn't looked that great. People overlook good actors if they're not aging that well. She's only 35, but she doesn't have that gorgeous, doll-like look she had in her early days.
She's been hooked on The Bell Jar since 10 Things I Hate About You! Does anyone remember her reading that book at a certain segment of the movie? Good for her if she wants, or could have, turned it into a reality on-screen. She's successful, and hopefully hasn't been forgotten yet of her deceased character in the Bourne series.

Don't blame the actor; blame the filmmakers. An actor's main job is looking for work. But it's hard to find high quality roles, films, shows, so you take what you can get.

I liked her from the first time I saw her play a part in a movie... She's just got that something "it" about her... Whether the roles they get her to do, accent her real talent or, just surround her with a bad plot and, scripting to start with, she does her part of top out...
