Building a Vintage Chevy 3100 Show Truck in the Driveway On a Budget Part 1

- Follow me along as I begin a new build. This time I'll be be doing a full frame off restoration of a 1948 Chevy 3100 Thriftmaster. My plan is to turn this truck from a rusty junk into a truck that will win awards at the car shows. I will perform all of my own fabrication, metal work, body work, wiring and paint work. And I will show you how all of this will get done right in my driveway. This is going to be a budget build, but don't assume that I'll be using cheap parts to reach my goal. There is a way do it on the budget while using high end part. Stick around and I'll show you how!!

So excited for this project
Had to put it on a back burner for sometime just because the amount of time that it will take to complete this project is going to be huge
Ok !!! Let’s go! Ready for this journey !!!
Yeah me to, this project has been on the back burner for a while now. But I figured, the sooner I'll start on it the sooner it will be done...
That truck is solid
That truck is pretty solid indeed. Hope to have it all up and running by summer 👍
Oooo, Man that's a sweet project!! Also one of my favorite trucks. Excited to see you use a modern drive train in a older rod. Keep us posted, stay safe!
Thanks brother, I want that vintage look to go along with the modern dependability. That's how you get the best of both worlds :)
Awesome!!!!! Looking forward to this build!!!!!
You and me both! 😉
Masterpiece after you complete it .....ilove this truck
I know I can get it to look just as good as it does in that picture. But I think I'll be going for a more aggressive stance. Only time will tell how it will look in the end :-)
Looking forward to the build ! Your going to need a shop one of this days ! Keep up the good work ! BTW thanks for the buffer tips
As of late I've been posting two videos per week which requires quite a bit of work in filming and also editing. Really hope UA-cam can promote my channel a bit more so I can actually start making some money, that way I can reinvest that money back into the channel so I have more epic builds for you guys :-) I'm trying to buy a piece of property to build a bigger house and shop on. Fingers crossed the deal goes through.
Can't wait to see the finished product on this. It's going to take a lot more work than those other projects have been, but hopefully you can keep up the positive attitude and even learn a few things on your first restoration job.
I'm doing a ton of research right now because I'll be doing a lot of custom things with suspension and frame that I've never had to do in the past. And I want to make sure that I do it right the first time so I wouldn't have to redo things down the road.... or having to get a whole another frame because this one got ruined :-)
I love these trucks. I want to be able to build one myself sometime soon!
I do have a solid five window cab for sale :-) that will get you to a good start 👍
Muy bien Bro seguimos de cerca ese nuevo proyecto saludos desde Honduras 🇭🇳🇭🇳🇭🇳😎
Mucho gracias Marco !!!
This is going to be good !
Indeed !
On its worst day that body is better than my 2000 Silverado. Cool truck!
LOL you must be somewhere on East Coast?
Detroit. Thanks for sharing this build.
We don't really have that problem here in Washington state, normally whenever you see a car with some rust it's a safe bet to assume that it came from the East Coast :-)
looking forward for this resto-mod ! Yay .. listen to you speaking about the project sounds like it's going to take a couple of years to complete O_O
It's for sure not gonna be something I'll be able to bang out in a couple of weeks... But hopefully if the weather won't be total crap and I'll have my motivation going strong I might be able to get this thing done by the spring or early summer, fingers crossed
Looking forward to the build. In your description you mentioned the other cab was from 47 to 54. 1954 was a loaner year, it was the first year of the one piece windshield and had a different dash set up. The bed rails were flat not angled like the 47-53. Your second cab is a 47-53. Also the grill was much different on the 54. Good luck on the build.
47-53 has all of my favorite attributes that the truck had to offer. Not a big fan of a 54 front end :)
Greetings from Yakutia.
Пётр, благодарю за коммент. Как там Якутия? Я сам родом из Томска...
👍🏻 I am anxious to see how the spotter works on this thick metal. If needed.
I may have to make my pulse duration little longer for the tip of the puller to fuse the thicker metal a bit better
And possibly use thicker washers?
Yes, possibly. Normally I use the washers if I'm trying to pull out a larger/longer dent. The only larger dent that I have on this whole truck is on one of the rear fenders, I guess I'll figure out my course of action once i'll start fixing the body which will be a bit down the road, I'm gonna start with suspension and the engine first and I'll work my way from the ground up
👍🏻
It is a 52 Chevy pickup beautiful truck
Haven't seen any video of yours in two months, hope you are well during these strange times of the pandemic.
I was involved in an accident, where I got hit by a car while walking in my neighborhood so I took it easy for a bit... but I just started filming again, so hopefully I'll have a vid out this week
@@fix206 Wow, so scary! Happy you are fine, do please take care, get well and stay safe!
Thank you Robert !!
Just checking in with you. Have you had much luck with the truck? 😁
Really, will build this truck?
That's your?
Will be interesting see you rebuild this truck!!!!!
Yes, this is my truck and I am going to build it. It's going to be an interesting project. Hope you'll stick around to see it to the end !
@@fix206 yes yes yes, I will see all videos.
Thank you my friend, I promise not to disappoint !!
This is going to be an interesting build. I hope you have the time to work on it regularly and post videos often. I have a slightly similar project on the back-burner. It's a 1964 EH Holden ute (small pickup) that I've owned for over 40 years. Unfortunately it got put off the road over 20 years ago and deteriorated badly with rust. I'd already done extensive rust repairs on it earlier, but now I have a replacement body for it, so I hope I can get to it some time to restore it. Unfortunately, I have too much else going on at the moment, but like you, I have been sourcing parts over time for the project. I don't think you mentioned what the frame you are using is from, unless I missed it? How's the fitment going to go? I'll definitely be watching this build very closely. As always, stay safe and all the best from Queensland Australia.
I was wondering about the frame also
The frame I'm using came out of late 80s Chevy S 10 truck. I was going to go over that in the next video when I'm gonna start working on modifying the frame

Hey mate, is that cab still available? I’m in the middle of a rebuild and I’d love a 5 window cab!
Yes it is still available... where about are you located?
@@fix206 I’m in Australia. Sunshine Coast, Queensland. I have a 1952 3100 pick up and it is covered in 6 layers of bog so the guys fixing it up have told me it’s just be easier to find a new cabin.
Any chance you’ve sanded it back? Or is it in the same condition as in this vid?
I haven't touched it, it still has all of it's original paint as you see it in the video. it is pretty solid though, in much better condition then most of the cabs you'd find these days...
Still interested?
@@fix206 yes please. I’m trying to get in touch with the guys doing my build so I can show them your video :)
Did you sell the cab? I'm in New England.
I still got it, let me know if you're interested
@@fix206 Please let me know what parts are included (ie. do you have the doors and nose? email slainte03@comcast.net, thanks.
What are you doing with the other cab?
I still have the other cab, it is available for sale
@@fix206 what kinda number do you have on it?
Are you local to me? I'm in Seattle area... where about are you?
@@fix206 I’m in Ridgefield wa
Oh ok, you're just down south... I'm located pretty close to "Wild Waves" in Federal way if you know where that is...
Вот это Димон куда интереснее чем
Rolls royce.👍
Согласен, Придётся попыхтеть с этим проектом походу до Весны или даже до лета, работы здесь будет куда больше чем с Роллс-РойсoM...
Did you find the VIN#?
If so, where is the VIN#?
In this follow up video I showed where the information was stamped into the frame: ua-cam.com/video/mSIzs1zKEO0/v-deo.html
oh, i'm subscribed all right. please don't put a visor on your truck like that one in the picture. i think the paint scheme is perfect.
I am 50/50 on the visor, why don't you like it?
A guy needs to understand title laws in their state before jumping into something like this. Yeah it can always be done, but knowing what the state wants can stop a lot of bureaucratic non-sense.
I did get the original title to the truck when I made the purchase, so getting it titled and licensed into my name shouldn't be any harder then going through the same process with a modern vehicle
