The Avengers Alternative Series 6 Opening Titles and Closing Credits

  • This set of titles and credits were shown on early episodes of Series 6 however they were subsequently re spliced using the "Field of Knights and Cards" sequence for re-runs. The only episode to inexplicably retain these titles is "Split" whilst the end credits come from "The Forget Me Not".
Both titles and credits had gun shot sound effects however these got inexplicably censored by the Canadian broadcaster.

Linda Thorson is certainly beautiful in her own right- she's got lots of appeal, and great legs. But Diana Rigg will definitely be John Steed's best remembered sidekick.

Linda Thorson's time on "The Avengers" always provokes a mixed reaction from fans.
Granted Thorson lacked the maturity and experience that Honor Blackman and Diana Rigg both brought to the show.
However she displayed a youthful charm and energy that was needed and despite the haphazard way her character was developed, Thorson proves herself a quick study.

she was cute, and fun. and the chemistry between john steed and she was always one of fondness and innocent friendship. where as with Diana Rigg you did get the feeling they bonked off camera

This was the opening title used for the Linda Thorson episodes that debuted in the United States in the SPRING of 1968, while the UK just had to suck it and wait for the fall. ;) On the flipside, their spring 1968 scheduling immediately followed the last eight Diana Rigg episodes, which had debuted in the UK in the fall of '67, while the US had to suck it and wait 'til early 1968! In the US the same pattern had been folowed for three years: in early 1966 the B&W Rigg episodes aired (only 21 of the 26, alas); in early '67 the first 16 colour Rigg episodes arrived (same as in the UK), and in early '68 eight more Riggs and seven Thorsons.

Recently saw an episode that featured Linda Thorson kicking the butts of a whole slew of kidnappers in a lighthouse. She had the entire operation wrapped up by the time Steed arrived to "rescue" her.

That was a very good episode indeed, entitled “All Done With Mirrors”, and it was the only time she used some form of pseudo-judo type moves. Wished they had incorporated that a bit more for her in other episodes for it would’ve added that much more to the excitement of her fight scenes, as well as to her character.

    • @MisterWhat
      @MisterWhat 6 років тому +1

That can`t be correct, she performs shoulder and back maneuvers as well as sacrífice throws in nearly every episode of the season. She has a fight with a Karate master in "Follow The Leader" and shows takedown and neck pinches in "Forget-Me-Knot". She uses her tighs to imobilize enemies when her hands are tied up in "Who Was The Man I Saw You With" and "You`ll Catch Your Death" too.

This is totally superior to the one they did outdoors after this- much more clever and visually interesting, with the combinaiton of action and sly humor the show was known for. It's also a natural outgrowth of the titles for the Rigg series.

Notice how the gunshot sound effect is missing only from the opening titles - they are clearly present in the end titles. This is not an example of censorship for any reason. It is lazy editing on the part of those who re-mastered the series for home video. They cleaned up the soundtrack just once, obviously for the field of armor version of the credits, and inexplicably didn't realize or care that it didn't exactly match this version of the credits. Really annoying, in my opinion!

  • @MrTrashcan1

The closing credits are to The Forget-Me-Knot, the transition episode from Mrs. Peel to Tara King. There are actually two different credits used for this particular episode. This one, at 1:51 has them walking together toward the rear. Another version has a still picture of them in the distance. I don't know if it was changed for syndication or for different markets.

I have that episode on VHS isn't that the one where the bad guy was wearing shoes made out of radiation or some type of chemical that illuminated his body I thought that was interesting and I like the transision from Emma peele to Linda Thompson very casual not a big deal Mrs Peele gets in her car and drives away to meet her husband that's it but the question is what did Mrs peeles husband do for a living was he also a spy for British intelligence but only with a different organization that was not run by MOTHER

This "end title" sequence was the introduction of Laurie Johnson's "revamped" Avenger's theme. It was, and still is, the best yet!
I have Laurie Johnson's 3 CD set featuring the music from "The Avengers." I'm just not sure if this end title theme is on there. I'll have to investigate.

Great how you linked the opening & closing credits for continuity - these credits (like the color Rigg credits) help establish the somewhat surreal nature of the program, & I prefer them to the suits of armor titles (although I do like those as well). By the way, did you know that there is even an alternate version to these? In some versions, the very last scene shows Tara & Steed standing still side by side, facing the camera, rather than walking away. Just a bit of trivia!

All the Avenger women were great. All had their own unique style which added to the flavor of the series greatly. Perhaps Tara King being in love with John Steed made her seem weaker, but, far from it!
Her fight scene in the optics factory in " My Wildest Dream" is my favorite fight scene in the entire series. Tara REALLY kicks ass and quite believable too.

I remember at one time that The Avengers came on and stated it was John Steed with his partner "talented amateur" Emma Peel. This used to always crack me up. Emma Peel was far more than a "talented amateur." I know this was more of their tongue-in-cheek humor. I wish I could find out where that Series Opening was or where I heard it. I was just a kid at the time this show was on but I remember my Dad watching this along with Wild Wild West, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and others.

It comes from the chess board opening which you can't find on any episodes any longer. They screwed up the openings on DVD's all you get now is the Field of Knights with Tara and the Still Picture and Champagne opening with Mrs. Peel. You can find the old chess board opening here ua-cam.com/video/frFWpzwos4I/v-deo.html

Your video description is not accurate for the episodes shown in the US. This set of titles was only used for about 6 episodes before changing over to the field and cards. All the reruns retained their original style of titles. In syndication in the US I continued to see all the episodes using the artist palette/targets for as long as they ran.

patrick macnee (or at least john steed) strikes me as a real nice bloke whose a bit posh but who you'd trust with your life and with your wife. he'd never dream of being a caddish type. But he'd more than be capable of doing what his country, his charges, his duty, and his friends required to keep them safe, and all without needing a thank you.
in some ways better than jimmy bond, that over active young man with the gadgets who treated women dishonorably, and fought like a girl without a proper umbrella

There was not enough for Macnee as Steed to do in the last season. Remember he had started a minor character on the show in the first season with Ian Hendry as the lead actor. He was becoming minor again.
As for Thorson she was fine as a leading lady. And she had the beauty and sex appeal. But credibility was stretched by having her be a little too heroic. Half as much heroics by her Tara character would have been perfect.

These titles are not very good, are they? A very unflattering outfit to dress Linda in, and she is still wearing a wig, after her hair fell out (peroxide). These titles must have been made in about Jan. 1968, in hurry, to accompany the seven episodes that were needed in America for May 1968, running directly after the Diana Rigg episodes. The first of these episodes (The Forget-me-Knot) was not shown in Britain until six months later, by which time the producers had had a chance to film the more-familiar "suits of armour" sequence, which i think is much sharper, more colourful and more flattering to the actors. I may be wrong, but I don't think these alternate titles were ever used in Britain (because there had been time to replace them).
