I believe that all carp family are bottom feeders, so they get to eat almost all that sinks (being most of it vegetable material... )! :-) correct me if I'm wrong any of the experts in the matter :-)
If anyone interested, try also canned sweet corn. I believe they will love it.

I love that you are feeding your fish some real natural foods too. It was fun to watch them with the watermelon rings. When I was a child, we bought a house with a pond and waterfall set up. There were small goldfish type fish in their that breed on their own. We just let the natural algae mats and stuff grow decent sized and they mostly fed on those plus the natural bugs. I did add some commercial fish food in maybe weekly. I was always having to cull (give away) babies as it made a quite natural habitat. On a similar but side subject, it always amazes me that people insist on feeding their dogs kibble which is not really very good for them. They just poop most of it through. Before the 60's, people feed their dogs mostly just table scraps and they were healthy.

Re that grocery store lobster, from Canada:
As it happens, my father in law, years back came from Robin Hood Newfoundland, and my wife came from the Moncton-Shediac area of New Brunswick. So I have some "lobster learning".
1) This Lobster is a Canadian Lobster by the size of its claws. This is a cold water lobster and would not survuive in the sea unless it were north of Cape Hatteras. The ocean water south would be too warm.
South of Cape Hatteras you would find the Caribbean lobster which has much smaller claws and a big fat belly.
Also, and likely you knew, the lobster can die if exposed to even a few drops of fresh water. In his time my father in law was also invoved with Canadian National Railways and the shiping of lobster from the maritimes to Toronto.
He told the story of a shipment that had been shipped in ice. By the time the lobsters got to montreal they were OK, but by the time they got to Toronto they were all dead. in the Montreal-Toronto lap (about 500 km.) the ice had melted and the reslt killed the lobsters. They then all had to be scrapped but the lesson was learned.
He also told the story of a tripo along the coast of Newfoundland after a big storm. The storm had ashed up a huge mess on the shore in one of the beach areas. Dead Lobsters varied in size from 2/4 of an inch to about 4 feet.
Hence I would expect that if yours continues to do well, he will grow some more until he has to shed and change his shell!
Naturally when that time comes he is going to feel vulnerable and his behaviour will change until he is settled in his new shell.
I think by that time you will likely have a real need for that larger tank you had mentioned!
As for food, lobsters are scavengers so "cleaning house" is no surpirise as he searched for edible scrap. It ight be ery interesting to feed hima Quahaug ("CO-hog") This is a large edible clam that can be found along the cost of the Strait of Northumberland between New Brunswick and P.E.I. but they are not commercialised outside of New Brunswick, so you would have to go there to get them. they are also sold in roadside kiosks during the summer as Fried Quahaugs, but be careful, some people are allergic, as i found out!
One summer I had some of those and that night was quite sick! However bizarre as it is, I loved Howard Johanson's fried clams when there was a Howard Johnson in PLattsbugh, NY. Those likely came from warm American waters and were likely better prepared.
Lobster meat is also very rich. Once again I had a lesson to learn. At a church lobster fest in P.E.I.I ate 4 "canners" (small and less than the size dictated by the government gauge used to grade the lobsters as they are landed (one of the proceedures done as a part of a special procedure to evaluate the fishermens' income taxes. This is a cash accounting procedure allowed for a few specific professions as has proven necessary. The procedure takes place on the dock as the Lobsters are landed, and likely is old enough to have been created at a historic time when many of the fishermen would have been illiterate.
A humourous note: On one trip returning by air to Montreal after a maritime vacation, when I boarded the air Canada flight about 6 PM local (Maritime daylight time) with a couple of boxes of lobster packed in artificial ice, the Stewardess remarked witha bit of a mischievoud tone: "I see you brought your dinner with you!"
However having cooked fresh lobster that was a very far cry from having them to eat on the flight. Apart fromhaving any sort of fire on board, an extreme taboo on an aircraft, the stench of them cooking would certainly raise a LOT of protest!
The evening I cooked a couple of these it was done in a propane-fired boiler aboard a landed boat hull that was log beyond being seaworthy, NOT inside!!
Those was served with Cooked Sandfire Greens which were harvestwed in the salt water marches, striled of the edible part, boiled like spinach and served with butter. As with many edibles in New Brunswick, there are not commercialised andnot found outside of there.
If anyone is thinking of visiting that area and getting in a swim on Parlee beach, its a LONG drive even from Montreal (about a day and a half.) Better to fly from U.S. to Halfax, and then change for a local flight to Moncton.
Shediac is about a 15 minute drive from Moncton, so you would then rent a car at Moncton airport on arrival.
Also when swimming beware of stepping on (pink) jellyfish as they will sting!

i recently volunteered to care for koi fish at a garden. The fish looked neglected and was only fed pellets. The turn over rate of volunteers is high, so the original care taker left years ago.
I love your advice to use watermelon as a toy! That is a great idea I will try later this growing season.

Hi, Brady! Nice video, very interesting behaviour and nice opportunity to keep studying it. Do you know that lobsters are incredibly long-living creatures. They can live up to 100 years and even more and they keep growing all the time. Let's see how much can grow this one!!
Lobsters are biologically immortal. They only die of age because they eventually get too big to provide enough energy to moult.

This is the second time I'm watching this video and it makes more and more sense. I've been feeding my koi, goldfish and other fish pellets plus your famous watermelon a treat.. but after watching this again I'm going to give them fewer pellets and more natural food. Thanks again!

I give marigold or oranges for their colour and against parasites. And chickpies and indeed spaghetti.
But my wild birds fight for that one. I saw this other guy putting a whole savoy Cole in it..upside down .the big koi's and steurfish had eaten it in 24hrs..left on axstump..haha
I will try that watermelon..ASA frisbee and Cale as a ball to play around with..

I have a 110 gallon indoor koi/goldfish pond, and like my 2 dogs who I make human grade dog food for, I would like to do the same for my Fin babies, as I don't like feeding any commercial foods, I understand the concept of the foods to give the fish, but, I would like to know what a daily routine of food you would suggest?
The price of koi food is getting harder and harder to be able to afford so I’m slowly introducing my fish to alternatives such as lettuce, peas, brown bread, sweetcorn, prawns, things like that
Skip the bread if you can It's not good even for us these days.

fish food is ultra processed garbage mostly by product from grains and animal processing waste you shouldnt feed animals or koi that garbage natural foods are better as a whole koi are essentially carp kile common "goldfish" they will eat constantly and shit even more ...so :/
Any problem with feeding my pond fish wet and dry dog food? Is a 5,000 gallon Pond full of bugs and other things for them to eat. I just supplement with dog food. The koi are still young. 3 to 6 inches. The Goldfish range from babies to adults.
Dirt bottom pond. No filtration. The water just overflows out when it rains heavy.

If koi eat shrimp shells, which is not digestable, would that go back to the pond and hard on the filter to clean?
There is a lot of nutrition and also color enhancers in shrimp shells. The Koi will grind on them with the teeth in the back of their throats,... and what ends up in the pond as waste should be picked up by leaf baskets and filters just like leaf particles, pine needles a d other things that end up in the pond. ✌️✌️✌️

Why is there so much conflicting information. I read on some sites don’t feed them peas and why would you feed them cooked shrimp or crayfish? They certainly don’t cook anything. I have been feeding mine a homemade food which does include peas and sweet potatoes, krill, flaxseed or oil, and spirulina, they love it are healthier than ever before. Nice video, we feed ours watermelon too.
Yeah there is a lot of conflicting info. in the Koi world as well as aquarium keeper world. Since this video is about feeding leftovers, feeding cooked shrimp, or cooked crayfish is more a matter of would you rather throw it out? Or would you rather feed it to your Koi. Raw is likely a better choice, but when you’re buying from seafood markets who knows what odd bacteria you might be bringing to your pond.
I have an outdoor pond with large goldfish. Can they safely eat all these same things, and will they?

No, Koi have crushing teeth in the back of their throat, they can easily chew and digest peas. ✌️✌️✌️
when you feed them watermelon, what about the seeds? both the black seeds and the white ones?
They easily crunch them up with the grinding teeth in the back of their throats.

No I don’t do that. Koi have grinding molars in the back of their mouth they can easily grind up peels or shells.

None of the koi in this video. Those young koi were all in a different pond. I will point a few of them out in a Leon video sometime soon.
@@Bradybrandwood oh okay. I just got two small female magoi from a farm in CA. You definitely inspired me… aside from their genetic benefits for breeding koi, I have found them to be very friendly, almost more so than the koi, after just a few days in my quarantine tank, once they figured out I was the food guy.

Icam definitely see the results of a cleaner pond since the Japanese garden j go too has a lot of green algae making the pond hard to see because they feed them pellets. I'll see if I can convince them to switch their diet to have a cleaner water
Aw man I was hoping this was the solution to doing my dishes, but I eat a lot of red meat and processed foods.
One of my koi are lyin on there side on the bottom of the pond but swims away very fast when i walk to the pond its cold here minus 1 sometimes
tommy riordan That is very cold, and koi are cold blooded, so they will often lay on their sides in very cold water. That is likely what is happening, but obviously very hard to say over the internet.

tommy riordan Yeah definitely. I did some tests at the farm a few years ago, and the pond that I covered with plastic stayed about 10° warmer than ponds that were not covered in plastic over the winter.

Start with soup, then a bread course. Maybe a salad, then the mains of shrimp and peas. Finish with chocolate pudding.

I saw on youtube frozen peas given to koi which have SD something (when they stay in a vertical position). I didn't give my koi anything for 3 days. On the 4th day I fed him peas and he got well the same day... back in horizontal postion.

It same to dogs and cats, dry kibble is the absolute worse type of pet food. For fish it is dry pellet which is at the lowest type of food that you can choose, as a pet owner those pet food company trying their best to brainwash us so we only think our pet should eat food that they made and called balance while charging us for tons of money. We are basically giving cash for trash, it's a processed food which is very unhealthy. Imagine you eating a canned food or something like instant noodle or cereal, you won't live a longer life.
feed something like frozen food frozen worm or live food if you prefer live version or even cooked food like boiled egg, boiled shrimp, squid, mussel, fish, etc so much better than that kibble or pellet.

Keep in mind though that almost all processed Koi pellets are wheat, oat, or corn meal based,... as are breads and pasta.
