You gotta have SOME cav presence. Personally I would always go with 2 lancers. I suck at cav but I'm amazing with infantry, so my cav would essentially service to take out a decent chunk of theirs with one charge and let my infantry change formation to match what they're doing.
About having unit AI be smart enough for soldiers to not attempt firing through each other: this was already solved in Shogun 2. Individual men in a gun unit will not fire unless they have a clear shot at a target, allowing for effective usage of staggered gun lines, defense in depth, and pike and shot. It also means that cavalry are especially vulnerable since their taller models allow guns to fire at them from behind melee lines.
You can put light infantry in-front of line infantry(in light infantry mode) and they won't kill the light infantry, and then you also place cavalry behind those line, effectively giving you 3 entire units firing from the same position, spread them out as much as possible, and you have the most possible guns shooting lead down range at the enemy. NTW
Hi, I sent this in and played as Richard Sharpe and was the central Anglo Portuguese army lead by his Grace the Duke of Wellington. I must confess to a couple of bloopers myself firstly leaving two full units of KGL line infantry out of the battle and forgetting about them till it was all over and second my KGL light company routed the Duke of Wellington just after he had just escaped an attempt by French cav to put him in the bag. If you would like to see the end stats and casualty figures I can send them.
Apollo about the blob rule: the NTW engine is flawed in that it allows you to stack several units on top of each other and occupy the same space, something obviously impossible IRL. So if people do this it makes them be able to do a N versus 1 charge, so N units spreading the damage taken from a single unit among themselves, having added morale (friendlies nearby i.e. the whole blob) and generally being able to punch through. It's considered cheating and against the spirit of the mod
Wrong all units will take the charge damage, this means its completely opposite of what you say buddy. This means a single cavalry lancer unit could charge 6 units stacked from the rear and literally route all 6 with a single flanking charge...... I would laugh my ass off if an actual human with a brain thought that was a good idea. The problem is usually the Ai does this and gets completely destroyed. Also like Fracopolli said. The units have collision, they aren't ghosting into themselves. (over 1200 hours)
The Emperor _certainly_ would. The half-trained early Republic levies that turned into vague blobs of pseudo-skirmishers out of sheer inability to hold formation but were perfectly happy to stick on the bayonets and go a-chargin' anyways, to the confusion and alarm of their adversaries for whom that kinda thing violated fundamental principles of infantry combat? Yeah they were a bit of a different story.
