That is one of the best looking fences I have ever seen! Excellent quality. I’m sure it’s a very costly fence, but you only cry once when you buy quality.

I like Tapcon fasteners for fastening to masonry. Also you might pre-paint all your steel before installation. That way all you would have to paint would be touch-up.

  • @hhattingh

If you ever decide on painting the fence poles and brackets. Look into Red Oxide. It is affordable primer so that home owner can paint on top what ever they want but more specifically it is designed as a anti rust coating and it's really worth it. You can include that as a service and the upcharge is tiny if any and you can do it with a small compressor right on sight. Home owners are generally keen on it because it saves them the hassle of adding a base coat. If you have a small shop and you need to transport the load the metal won't scuff easily and it takes arch welding really well. Thank you for all the pointers you gave in this series. Been wondering on designs and ideas for mine. This is looking really sharp. I like the top bar/ brackets and your idea of letting water drip at bottom 'slats'. Definitely stealing that idea. Great stuff & thank you.

Don't worry about gap you actually need more gap. I build same type of fences and when it rains they will expand and break if there is not enough gap. But it looks awesome

Every wooden deck i ever built from treated lumber the decking lumber shrinks an never fully swelled back up,wen i built the first one i used 16 penny nails to set the gap an they all had at least a quarter of a inch or more a few years later as the treating liquid dries out an water cant penetrate the lumber like pressure treatment does from the hence pressure treatment ,key word pressure to force the chemicals into the lumber to stop rot an insects ,

The cedar boards expand and contract the way the grain is going. There will actually be a small gap between boards next year because fresh cedar like that actually shrinks width wise. Staining the boards will slow the process but not stop it. Tell the customer thats called wind gap. Other customers ask for a wind gap and you have to explain that it will naturally make it's own.
      The fence looks great!

But you can put them in every cpl boards, then they would all like factory to the naked eye. But overall, looks good

As always awsome video, only thing I would say is always core drill your latch post in the situation you had, never attach to the house. One reason is you created a place for water to get into the house brick. Second is in some areas you have to have a contractors license and building permit to attach to a house or permanent structure.

Great project and result Austin. I know the homeowners opted to paint it themself but would you mind sharing what you would have charged additional had you been asked to paint it? A rough figure would be helpful to me (Not what you charged on the build, just an idea of your up charge for paint finishing work) Seems welding content makers are always a bit reluctant to share what they charged for a particular project so I get it if you’d prefer not to, but figure since you didn’t charge for paint, it might be a little less sensitive to share an estimate. I think that would be very valuable info to viewers though if they are trying to break into the industry as self employed welders and there doesn’t seem to be a lot of you tubers covering that (aside from hypothetical type quoting formula videos). Thx in advance if you get this

Now the gate can be wider as it doesn't have to clear the screw heads. Also if the front of the tubing gets dented in it will still be tight against the house.

my experience with fencing and gates has been pretty fun. i work in commercial doors and frames. Noramlly I use tongue and groove for the wood. It allows you to make adjustments while closing off the cracks between pieces, along with the expansion and contraction of wood. Also, i like that door latch you made, pretty simple yet effective. I usually make an ASA strike on the strike leg and a stop like a hollow metal door frame. Put a cylindrical lock on the gate with an astragal. comes out super clean yet pretty simple. i have come to find that it's the little things here and there that make your work stick out big time. along with fit and finish obviously. Your fence came out very clean. good work.

For the bolts i would recommend using a rubber washer for a water tight seal or look up Jimbos Garage and watch how he installs pieces onto brick, normally on the face he will cut a 1" hole and drill through the back side and then he will get a black rubber cap so it looks like its not even there.

Just curious but is there anything more to the "Silver Play Button" other than a piece of plastic to hang on the wall ?

Do you know if the individual planks ever shrank? Maybe some pics/video of it down the road. Been welding for 12 yrs mostly structural steel(Ironworker) but been dabbling in the miscellaneous game for a few yrs now. Would love to pick your brain man. Love your work bud keep on keeping on

Ross, in my opinion, the mid-way / half point bracing, should look symmetrical. Put another way, should appear to be all of the same height. Those two sections (one side of the house, with no gate) the other section that touches that one, (looks like 6" inches or more,) take away from the overall appearance. Great design, Thanks for sharing.

Welders are like Engineers always worrying about the tolerance. Steel moves but not like wood and the uniformity of the product is often doubtful too. I mostly work with wood but play with steel occasionally. That is when I wish I could weld like you. Never been taught just keep trying to make it prettier. That fence looks great from every side so all should be happy.

I really like the fence I just have one question, will the steel rust and stain the lumber or are you going to paint it. Looks like the fence will last forever!

Doesn’t really seem like anyone answer my question. In this video the fence seems to be done ... I assume he wouldn’t take it all apart just to paint the steel at this point. I have watched the other videos but didn’t take notes so I was just asking if there is a reason for the method he took.
