This might sound weird, but I was watching this video during a 4.5-hour Zwift ride that, on paper, shouldn’t feel that hard, but I was struggling a LOT with it. Seeing you go through all of this this week helped me get through my own workout. Thank you for that, Eric! Keep crushing it, and I have a really good feeling about a 2:31 marathon in Chicago!! See you there!!
Man, I can relate to this so much! I ran a 2.41 in Boston and was targeting a sub 2.40 in sydney in September for the age group world champs, then I got sick and my HR has been super high since. Still, you've reminded me that there's still time and not to panic, at least not just yet. Really needed this today!
Another great start of the morning before my recovery run, this is a treat as my birthday is tomorrow but no one seemed to care about it. Calling this as an early present 😢
Loved this video Flo! It’s good to see that even you athletes are still human and get sick from time to time. I’m 9 weeks out from a half here in the UK and aiming to go sub 1:30! Your videos are an inspiration and keep me motivated, keep up the hard work and great content 💪🏻
Ran 2:37 last spring and shooting for 2:32 and Chicago as well. It’s nice to see the reality of training at this level isn’t always perfect workouts and pain-free easy runs.
Awesome footage of NYC! Absolutely love when everyone’s Fall training blocks start! Gives me plenty of content and motivation for my own half marathon training! Keep grinding out these hot days. Hot-humid Summer runs = FALL PR’s
Dude, I feel your pain! I live in Fort Worth and the Texas heat this time of year really is BRUTAL. Some days it feels like the only acceptable time to get a run in is at like 2 in the morning lol. Definitely had a few soul-stealing days recently. Nice job getting the work in regardless, love to see it 💪
Such an honest appraisal of where you’re at, thank you. Having the discipline to rest up when you need it is a good habit. Your work ethic will ensure you show up and run well at Chicago, it’s inspiring 🙌🏻💪🏻
Grateful for your transparency. I've had a PTT injury presenting as arch pain since April and every day I go to sleep praying it cools off enough by the next morning to hit my miles. It's improving, but it's crushing to have it in my legs and my heart and just praying this dumb injury doesn't smash my goals for Chicago. Nice to know I'm not alone. Ha.
I did this on my last long run this last weekend. I had to split my last 4 mile MP block to two 2 milers. I feel you! I’m glad it’s not just me who gets these problems sometimes! Love watching your videos! It’s been my motivation for sub 3 this year.
I’m starting my training block for KC half this week and have suffered from traveling. Glad to know other people are struggling their way through trying to be their best. Thanks!
Great video, as always. I love the honesty that is hard to find with running influencers sometimes. You sort of answered my question about doubles, that they are for adding milage. I'm guessing coach will up the miles on the double day easy runs a little bit? Maybe you'll cover it in a later episode, but I'd love to know about your weekly schedule. I went sub 3 in March, with a speed workout on wednesday and a long run with tempo intervals on Saturday. Now I'm aiming to go sub 2:50 in october, and im thinking of keeping a pure speed session on tuesday, a tempo session on Thursday, and a changeable long run on Saturday. To maximise all heart rate zones. I'm self coached, so im always looking to learn and add infomation to my running.
Love the video! You’re killing it with the raw and honest content and I appreciate it! You do look like you’re dangerously on the edge of overtraining and I know you have a great coach but be careful!! Never be afraid of slowing down on an easy run day to keep the effort low! You got this!! 🎉
it's fun watching the kids. thanks for letting us into that part of your life. one day, let's get all 6 of them out at a race all together! looking forward to the rest of this series, eric~
I did my first marathon last May. I had to travel for in my first week of taper. I wasn’t feeling great either. I reduced my mileage more than prescribed for the week. My watch predicted a way different time than what I ran (I was 15 min slower). All that to say, I feel you on traveling and trying to train at the same time. It’s tough on me and that is what I learned. Chin up and looking forward to the next updates.
Morning from the UK , Spot on about the heart rate and the comments re Strava .. I get the same thing (my range is 137 -167 @55 ) and I say the exact same we all have our own ranges and is highly likely that our exersion % is very much like everyone else.
Thanks for sharing, sleep is part of recovery. Lack of sleep compromises your immune system. Your body is asking for more recovery due to higher load. You will have to make some hard decisions about lifestyle during travel, Godspeed!
No doubt. Thankfully I nailed sleep the whole last week and a half as I struggled through this lingering sickness, and I'm finally doing better. Going to be prioritizing rest like crazy on this block.
Had a workout yesterday with 5 x 1 mile repeats at 6:45 with 800m recovery jog, 11 total. Temp was 82, dew point was 70. Plug that all into a calculator and it said that effort would feel like 7:09 pace on a day with better conditions. I was able to hit paces, but man was that hardest workout I've ever done in my life. Humidity is KILLLER.
Thank you for sharing another epic episode, sorry you struggle right now hopefully you will get back on track soon! I kind of faced similar experience lately, i visited family in Europe got some virus, first week of runs after i came back felt the worse. Just as you struggled in the video 😅, anyway as you say 10 weeks is a lots of time to get ready 💪keep up on the good work! 👍
Thanks for all your positivity! A lot of people have shared that they've experienced something similar recently, so it's nice knowing I'm not alone in it. Feeling amazing this week, so I'm very excited to be getting after it again! Thanks for watching!!
Some people just have low HR’s I’ve been taking running seriously the last couple years and I’ve never seen mine above 173 before. Be interesting to see if I can unlock a new gear and get it higher! I’m still learning my body on all out efforts. My progress has been really good, have improved my 5k down to 18.12 and hoping I can lock in a target of 82-85 half in October. Hope your training block goes as well you hope it will. 💪
Awesome video as always, super excited to watch you progress this block! Particularly regarding nutrition and diet, really like seeing that aspect 😁Those stomach groans sounded horrible, glad to have you back healthy 😊🙌
Heeeck yes. I’ve been sick for almost a week now and am struggling with resting/recovering but still wanting to get out and train too. Nice to know you’re not the only one sometimes😅
People really do need to be careful about comparing heart rates. For example, your average heart rate for the last mile of that 5K was my average for my last marathon.
I'm aiming to run in '25, I'm training to try and get a 3:30 though. Got a year and then some. My first half was this year at 1:50, got a ways to go, but feeling good about it!
So assuming Chicago happens as planned, is Indy in November still on the schedule? That's my hometown race, going for a big PR and would love to see you out there!
There are those days where we feel like the hammer and those days we feel like the nail. Then, there are those days we feel like the tack that was whacked by a sledgehammer.
Hey i know you are a dad and a husband before a runner, andi see how much effort you put in and like i think you’re leaving a lot of recovery potential by sleeping less!!!
On the exact same day I was running on the almost exact same route at Brooklyn Bridge, if I did my run 30 min later I would have met you! Oh well, lets meet in Chicago, by that I mean next year Chicago--hopefully I can keep up with you this time(I was destroyed during the Brooklyn Half when trying to follow you)

Oh, and I think what shows on race day is the previous 8-9 weeks, at least according to a lot of those race predictor algorithms. So you’ve got plenty of time to double your way to sick mileage
I guess I can empathize with you a bit. Training for CHI but just came down with COVID (for the first time today). But I think I’m going to rest until symptoms are better. Don’t want to raise the cortisol levels. On the plus side I’m eating less and hopefully losing some much needed weight. 😂
Would love to, but I don't feel as sharp as I was before Twilight 5000, and I definitely need to focus in on my block now. I also have a half marathon tune-up in September, so I gotta lock that all in.

Yes, you are in 2:28 marathon. Anything slower than 2:30 would be shorting too low. Especially considering the fact that you ran that 5km "sick". I just added 15 seconds per km on your 16:15 (5km time).
I wouldn’t beat yourself up on the 5k effort i think your heart rate could just be suppressed because your I’ll. 170’s would be like your half effort and from the footage you definitely look like your going for it. Sorry to hear that! Any particular thing that made you feel that way? Legitimately not trying to be cocky at all. Mostly just an idiot who gets sick very easily and can't stop throwing up on hard efforts.
@flobergruns I don’t want to speak for him, but I’m assuming it’s the audacity to target sub 2:32. Your workouts and fitness trajectory (assuming no illness and everything else goes perfectly) would likely put you just under 2:35 on a perfect weather day in Chicago. Everyone has different talent levels and I can say for a guy like myself that I’d need to be doing 80-100 MPW for 16-20 weeks with even more quality workouts than yours to even dream of putting a sub 2:30 out there. I basically had a perfect build and several years of high quality training in my legs and ran a 2:33 this past Spring. That being said, it’s possible that you’re just more talented and I respect you for dreaming big. It can come off as arrogant/cocky though. I will continue to follow you along and am wishing you all the best though!
I would say you are a victim of your own success. You’ve basically become the dude on Facebook that is posting constant humble brags. Trips to Hawaii in your Lambo, etc #blessed.
