Seen alotta how to adjust traps Vids, but let me say this one is by far one of the best.....simple, direct and to the point....no hocus pocus with 50 tools!! Good vid...subscribed!! Happy Trapping!!
This is a wonderful video. I have to adjust my new traps that are the same as these. Wish me luck in catching the varmint's that are killing my chickens and pigeons. Thanks for the video Steve.
Thanks Steve. Nice tips on trap adjustments. The 1.5duke is a great trap for water trapping or land trapping. I trapped my first ever animal in one. It was a grinner lol.
I know this is an old video but it was basically the only one that came up in search. I've seen people talk about trap tuning on trapperman forum but no real instructions. This is my first season trapping. Had a miss because a fox or coyote stepped on the pan it fully went down but the dog didn't break loose. Seems like whenever I get the pan level with the jaws it won't let the dog go and snap. I'm going to try crimping the dog a little bit like you did. I have duke 1.5s and 1.75s if that makes any difference. I've had 2 snapped traps from fox because I set the traps with the dog side facing from the dirt hole. Learned to fix that and yesterday missed the one where the dog was stuck even with fully depressed pan. Super frustrating lol.
On the Duke 1.75 oval pan. I have had trouble with the pan getting stuck between the springs. I had to bend up the edges of the pan to stop this. Sorry took so long to reply. Good luck.
The trigger play on a Duke is the worse! I believe that trigger adjustment on a Duke brand trap will mean more fur waiting for you. Toe's in your trap don't put fur in your shed, ya' know?! I have about 2 dozen Dukes and I've used them for everything I trap for so I'm not knocking the brand. Yet, it is important that we take the time to tune them before we trap with them. Steve has an easy way of doing his videos but make no mistake folks, there is a lot of helpful info in that 6 minutes. Good one Steve.
I agree ..But they do have good springs ...My only gripe is they are not made in the U.S...I do have trouble with the 1.75 oval pan catching on the spring levers ,so the edges of the pan have to be ground or a bolt put under the pan to limit the drop...Thanks Pennsyltucky Trapper
I used traps for ground hogs and raccoons in the garden.. Just had old rusty leg traps that hung in the tool shed. None of those smarter fur bearing animals.
I have found, with the strength of the new springs any tension is too much..Specially with light footed critters like muskrat and Mink . Thank's for the tip
Your video is excellent! Wish I would have known this years ago. That's why I never caught anything with my pan looking up in the sky. That's why I buy MB traps now. ready to go right out of the box. So instead of $13 for a Duke I spend $19 for an MB and its ready to go. I would rather spend my time trapping then modding traps. I say that and yet I just went into field and stream and manager sold me Duke #2 for $7. I bought them all. Now I have to file the dog, level the pan, loosen pan tension and night latch it. How long is that going to take? 15-20 minutes a trap? It takes a awhile to file the latch right. then the pan tension @ 3 pounds usually have to set the trap 4-5X to get it right.
Good Instruction even though I don't Trap, But enjoy Your Vids Bro!
Well that had to be tough to watch...Thank you
