My children(18,13,11) have such a great time looking back at my hobonichi weeks. I am in the third year of my hobonichi week, and I cannot believe I have stuck with it. I think it is awesome that you are adding hobonichis to your lineup.
I remember when the happy planner craze started at work some years ago and I would sneer at the women tearing up my aisles. But then I got one when they went down in price 😆 I kinda did the junk journal/ daily planner thing for 2.5 years. I felt really proud about it but last year I just stopped when quarantine happened. I did almost no art last year. It's the absolute worst. Happy to see your sweet collection. So exciting 😁
I bought a random journal at Michael’s. Turns out it is a Denik and holds gouache really well with no transfer to the backside of pages! It’s my planning journal for projects and bigger paintings. I’m also working on The Sketchbook Project for the Brooklyn Art Library. I love your tarot project!! Thanks for sharing your journals.
Great lineup, Roxanne. I, too, have jumped on the Hobonichi craze/rabbit hole. I've been documenting in the Hobo 5 year since 2019, but this year I've started an A6 Free-Day or Day-Free (whatever) for recording personal events with pix and paintings. For daily use the Hobo Weeks, which is making lists, keeping me on task, brain dumping, recording ideas, etc. I've decided to keep it somewhat "plannerly", but also loose and artsy. Thanks for sharing your lineup, and I can't wait to see more. I'm hoping 2021 will be kinder to all of us, and in that, I'm hoping to rejoin your Patreon, I really, really miss your site.
thanks Julie! and how exciting that you're already a few years into your 5 year! I look forward to getting to that point. the thought of it keeps me motivated to stick with it.
Thanks for this, very relatable as well! Where as I don't have a baby any longer at my knee it is when I began using a planner & found my art books/creative books off to the side & sadly were collecting dust. Looking back at that time now when the planner society on here was so small because I recall looking for a review on a suggestion for a concise "mom planner". Now I have those pages to look back over the years where I sat in doctor's offices sketching on those pages and doodling, documenting & just using up time & nervous energy. I really wish I had a five year journal at the time, it would probably have been a better place to dump all the information. I have a special needs child so documenting every area was essential but I didn't realize how much at the time it was just something I did. Continued luck on your creative journey along with your documenting one. I enjoy all you share. Best to you, be well.
✨❣️YAY!! Always look forward to your posts! I have so many notebooks and journals that need some creative flow. Your content always reminds me to just go and do it! ❣️✨
I’m really excited to see the tarot project evolve! And for me....I think most of my sketchbooks are just dumping grounds...I wish I could get it together and just have a sketchbook that is just one specific thing lol ...I struggle...but I do have a word of the year which is TRUST.
Nice lineup! I've been using a Hobonichi since 2016 and this year I'm using the cousin for journaling. I only need a weekly format for planning so I'm using a different planner for planning. I too purchased a Hobonichi 5-year diary because my husband will be retiring in 2025 and I thought it would be fun to count down the days but yet document how our lives shift while we prepare for that. The other thing is that I think our kids would like to read it when we are gone. After my mom died in 2006 we found some of her papers/journals and it was so fascinating and healing to experience her in that way. As for art journaling, sticker usage, etc. I'm on a minimal spend/use it up year (not really by choice). I plan on filling up a bunch of sketchbooks, art journals, note books; using up a bunch of art supplies, paper, pens, pencils, stickers and washi. I'm actually going to keep my empties throughout the year so I can quantify my usage and (hopefully) get one last rush of satisfaction from seeing it all at one time. I too am hoping to rejoin your Patreon. You and your precious family are a joy and a hoot!
I loved reading your reasoning for getting a 5 year...it sounds like the perfect time to start documenting things! same with the kiddos - I think about Roman reading my things in the future. cheers to making more art and using all the things this year!!
Watched James Burke's video on his 5 year hobonichi flip through since he started in 2019...now its got me thinking I might start one. I like the snap shot aspect and being able to see what was going previously but trying to tame my handwriting to write small will be an effort. Oh totally agree with you there...the gluing, the stickers...all the bits definitely feels like a productive and creative time spent ...love it. I'm working in a Lamy journal..its chunky with all the bits I've got stuck in it and will be using till May.
After many failed attempts at keeping a diary I hopped onto the bullet journal trend in 2016. I first started with an A6, too small, didn't like the A5, too big. After filling up my first bullet journal I made my own, sized between A6 - A5 and my 4th is nearing the last page. I'm surprised at myself.
This was so great. I have multiple sketchbook/planners as well. They’re like my external brain & help me so much to stay on track. I’ve nailed down a my own planner system using a Moleskin that I think i’ve done for over 10 years now. It’s not a problem at all. 🖐🏻🤣lol! Can’t WAIT to see the Tarot cards develop! ✨
"Project development sketchbook" sounds fancy :D I call it my "workhorse" sketchbook because I had no idea what else to call it. But whatever it's called, I think this type of sketchbook is essential for a creative process. I really don't like the Moleskine sketchbook paper, but that Strathmore looks interesting for the mediums I use, I'd love to try it!
I sometimes have a moment of anxiety thinking about how many BOOKS I'm filling and storing, and what that might look like 30 years from now, or what if I kick the bucket and it becomes somebody's problem, or what if I'm homeless, etc. Seeing as you've moved recently... (lol), have you ever had this thought, and have you (or anyone) heard of any cool systems of sorting or reusing or maybe even selling sketchbooks so that they don't become a burden down the line? 😅
Honestly, that will probably be a decision for my son in the future! When I 'kick the bucket' he'll get to decide what to do with them ;) As far as things go now, my completed books (and even partially finished one) really don't take up a whole lot of space. I have a bin in my garage where most of them are stored, and a few I keep on a shelf in my studio. Easy peasy!
Linda Richards naw...I’ve got a lot to work on as it is 😂 although maybe my 5 year counts, I do that everyday? I’ve actually never done a 100 day challenge before.

Thank you so much for sharing with us!!!
Love the BSS being a pattern book. I could see the patterns becoming fabrics!

Watching the tarot project evolve is very entertaining.

oh I love the name 'workhorse sketchbook'...so good! and yes, it really is essential!

Are you planning on doing The 100 Day Project? It starts early this year; January 31st.
Linda Richards naw...I’ve got a lot to work on as it is 😂 although maybe my 5 year counts, I do that everyday? I’ve actually never done a 100 day challenge before.
Now I want a 5-year-journal as well! But it's 2 weeks into the year so I don't know if it's to late to start now
