  • how to fix or repair the compressor. This is a 1993 Cadillac Eldorado. Most 4.9L, 4.5L, and 4.1L front wheel drive engines should be about the same job from about 1985-1995 I do believe. Ac compressor is an exact fit for 1994-1999 DeVille, 1993-2002 Eldorado, and 1993-1997 Seville. This is not a Northstar engine!

    A pretty good summary of what a mechanic goes through, tricky access, problematic bolts, rust etc. Nice walk through.

    I've got a 1990 Eldorado I'm restoring. I need to charge the ac compressor. When I bought the car last week I tuned on the ac and it blew not hot nor cold In between. It is low on R134A previous owner had it converted. It displays Low Refrigerant and the compressor cycled off. Do you know the Color of the Power wire so I can jump it on. Thank you

    • @RustBeltAuto
      @RustBeltAuto  5 років тому

      Unplug the compressor coil. If it has one wire, That will require + power. If it has 2, it will require a +, and -. On a two wire system, it doesn't matter which ones you use, because it is just a pull in winding, making an electromagnet.

    • @RustBeltAuto
      @RustBeltAuto  5 років тому +1

      Unplug it, and jump with power, and ground. Coil winding can go either way.

      @@RustBeltAuto Thank you for your help I greatly appreciate it. I replaced the air conditioning compressor and accumulator along with the Orifice tube and seals. I'm doing a 1993 Seville 4.9 right now. GREAT video, thanks so much. Got a new Four Seasons 58963 compressor (supposedly correct fit) and the orientation is off. Its requiring me to twist the lines quite a bit to connect them. No joy so far. Also the old, original compressor used two thin washers and the new one looks like it's meant for a medium and thick washers. Should I keep messing with this to see if I can get the lines on there? Or buy another brand?

    • @RustBeltAuto
      @RustBeltAuto  2 роки тому

      It's the wrong compressor. Also, there are separate seals you can buy from Napa, if they do not supply the right ones.

  • @markromans1814
    @markromans1814 2 роки тому

    Thanks so much for the response. Exactly....wrong compressor. Ugh. I spoke with Four Seasons and they've confirmed that I need their 58956 even though the 58963 is listed to fit. I hope this helps someone who might be in my situation. Definitely check the orientation when you get a replacement compressor. It should be exactly the same. One more question, Rust, if I may....are there o rings under the switches/sensors that are on the freon line that runs across above the firewall? Or are they crush washers? I would like to change all of the o rings I can while the system is evacuated. Never delt with these. Are they easy? Thanks!

    Rust belt auto can you help out please. 1990 Cadillac Eldorado 4.5 Do you have a part number for the color coded manifold seals. How much oil should I put in the new compressor. I'm replacing the Accularator as well will I be safe adding 2 ounces as the gm system calls for 38oz R12 and 8oz oil. It's a R134A system. Thank you

    • @RustBeltAuto
      @RustBeltAuto  5 років тому

      Depends. I would do at least 4 ounces. See if any comes out of the old compressor. If no, go six oz. At least. If yes, add that amount plus 4 more to be safe. It usually depends on how big a leak it is, how it failed, and where, so you need to guess. A slow leak on the cold side will loose less oil. There is a universal o ring kit you can buy at any parts store. It is a pack with a bunch in there.

    • @Tom-wq2mz

      @@RustBeltAuto The low pressure switch on the low side line failed and leaked all the R134a out. As I manually engaged the compressor I seen it leak and replaced it with new. As I manually engage the compressor it kept popping fuses that is when I discovered the bad clutch so I ordered a remanufactured unit. I believe the coil is touching the plate shorting it out.
