Debbie was sentenced to six years for drug trafficking. She began university studies in jail and made history when she became the first woman with a serious conviction to be admitted as ‘a fit and proper person’ to the bar of Queensland.
Debbie mounted a spur-of-the-moment crowd-funding campaign to pay off the court debts of Indigenous women incarcerated in Western Australia for defaulting on fines.
The campaign raised more than $1 million, helping 140 women.

You're amazing Debbie, I am in awe of your tenacity, humanity and drive to have accomplished
all this. Thank you for caring for all the sisters and creating ways and means to lift them out of the
industrial prison complex that perpetuates the marginalisation and poverty.

So wonderful to see someone whom has seen much more by experience ,
Is doing a masterly job in supporting those not given a voice .
Youth detention is brutal and will harden the impulse to have no fear.
No fear of Death or consequences for adrenalin high.

Lived Experience provides the inside knowledge which No textbook could provide, specially when that knowledge and experience are being used to assist and support those in need.

Gosh I’m in WA caught up in the incestuous legal system / boys club in Perth. There is no justice here, only a capitalist legal system. My trial is in November for false charges, I have presented evidence proving my innocence to many overseeing authorities, but no one cares. I’m just a woman alone in a low socio economic situation, they can and do dismiss me easily. I’ve paid almost $50k from my mortgage on lawyers, but now have to represent myself due lawyers vanishing and lawyers working with prosecution to try to force me into a plea… to prosecution delaying and wasting the money I didn’t have to begin with. Faced now with losing my home and my freedom. Although I have not done anything to warrant this. It’s false accusations from a nasty and controlling ex boss who has lost his cash cow and now has to do the work himself or lose his business. He has long standing friends in the force who were happy to prosecute me on his word alone and did not investigate, even when a court order was raised to ensure this. They just waited for the right magistrate to throw it out of court. It’s very very wrong. There is nobody here like Debbie. Debbie you are AWESOME!

I sincerely wish you the best of luck in what must feel like a hopeless situation! 🤞 It's tough enough being stuck in a low socioeconomic situation as it is without legal problems, and the added costs of that. Fighting an adversary who apparently has made some convenient friends in the system must be extremely overwhelming and discouraging. Maybe you should try to reach out to her people for help...? It couldn't possibly hurt you! Try your best to stay strong through this, Kim. Your comment hit me in the heart. I'll be thinking about you, all the way from Norway.

How is paying the fines for these women going to help them and what lesson will this teach them? They'll get into debt, not pay fines and expect someone will get them out of their situation. No no.
