Fax let them battle it out
They dropped the ball HARD. They gave us DJ breaks when we should have got Stand battles in between field shows.
JSU got that one but ESPN need to hit the door. Either you’re going to let them play or not.
Even with JSU's slight mess up on the drill, the show was way more complex and entertaining than anyone else. Their sound was also in a league of its own.

Regarding the Band Of The Year event, there are some points to be observed, the first and most clear, it was a failure with the public, the second the bands were shrunken or rather cramped in a corner of the stadium, when there was so much empty space for them to be better accommodated, third in a fantastic stadium with so much space, acoustics and resources, they placed the bands on the extreme sides where we know that in covered environments the acoustics don't help. Finally, I don't know what criteria were adopted by the event's judging committee, but I think JSU was better than NCAT. It's my opinion.

I am Brazilian and a musician and I had my musical initiation in the school marching bands in my city, as here in Brazil universities and colleges do not have the culture of keeping marching band activity in their curriculum, I became a conductor before I even graduated in music. My specific instrument is the Trumpet, but my arrangements and adaptations were for all brass sections, I follow and admire your work here on UA-cam and also on Instagram, and I really like the vibrant way in which you analyze and detail the bands' performances whether they are high school students or university students. Finally, I think the universe of American marching bands is fantastic, and for me Jackson State, Southern State and Norfolk State form the current power trio of American university marching bands, as they present power, quality, boldness and mainly transmit emotion through music with their performances. Congratulations on your important work!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

They could have opened the stadium to the public to one side. This would allowed for all field shows to face the crowd while ‘filling up’ one side
Come on ESPN… look at the spacing of the bands and how about the terrible acoustic sound wtf…JSU probably would’ve won the stand battle but I’m not to sure they would’ve won the field show NCAT along with cold steel puts on a hellva show ESPN you need to understand the culture of Hbcu

I’ve never seen a collegiate band RUNNING onto the field to start a show in a judged competition and actually win lol. And I’ve been in band at the DCI level AND have judged marching competitions in the past lol. But learning they had judges who were alumni of a competing school is unethical in every way possible. There’s no way you can trust them to truly be unbiased. It’s all fishy.
I’d like to see the source where you found out about the judges. What’s wrong with running on the field? Did the rules say you have to march on? I like when bands try different things.
@@Avery-Maca structured entrance is about uniformity, presentation, and showmanship. It is juvenile to have your collegiate band run on to a field for a major competition. In my professional opinion, it’s tacky. It’s not hard to conceptualize a simple field entrance and incorporate it into a field show. Not doing so, is lazy (again, in my professional opinion)

@@kentrelt5140 I saw plenty of drilling from NCAT. It’s just not the SWAC type. They had the soft intro. Built it up loud afterwards. Made lots of designs and shapes. The auxiliary utilized dancing, twirling, chairs, and flags. They had a nice drum solo to both sides of the field. At the end they danced, played, and did more drilling. They incorporated the glide and high step in their marching. Very complex show with a lot more dynamics in the music.
If they allowed more rounds in that battle between jsu and a&t, they definitely should’ve threw in a slow song or two. Both bands had some great ballad songs this season that would’ve been perfect to play in the stands in my opinion

First off, congrats to all the band programs that participated…the issue a lot of us Boom alumni have is the judges not releasing the criteria that factored into their decision, which made it seem predetermined, and if that was the case, we should’ve just cranked up on ‘em anyway…damn the points 🤷🏽♂️ lol

You stated before this competition that you believed that it was rigged and it was my sentiments exactly. Both bands made mistakes not just JSU. I don't think it really mattered what JSU did because their minds were pretty much made up before this competition. When they announced that NCA&T was even in this competition I knew it was rigged.
Something about how they judged the bands was fishy.
@@KBThaBandhead Exactly!!! The competition was originally suppose to be all SWAC & MEAC then they added all HBCU conferences. NCA&T has not a member of an HBCU conference in 2 or 3 years. When I saw they first had them #2 then they moved to #1 in the end. Then when I heard the different categories being judged I knew it was rigged for sure. Each category included things that favored NCA&T. Go back and check out the press conference for this competition which happened on Thursday and hear how they dissed SWAC bands. That further let me know, it didn't matter what JSU did, they were going to give it to A&T.
Sour grapes man. Sour grapes. NCAT has an awesome band and performed on par with JSU on the field. How do you know all the things you say or is this just how you feel? “Their minds were made up??” Can you read minds? Reminds me of how they “know” the election was stolen with no evidence.
I heard that some of the judges donate to NCAT ever year and some of them went to NCAT but when you have a competition with judges you always announce who they are their give a lil background about the judges so that kind of let me knew then what was going on
@@KBThaBandheadit was never ever supposed to be with just SWAC or MEAC. The rubric ESPN BOY used was the same one they used all season. In fact this rubric been out for years. Google ESPN’s The Undefeated Launches HBCU Band Rankings. Only difference this is the first year they attached money, trophy, and face to face competition.
They squeezed them in those little corners 🧐
The BOOOM 💥 had foots to necks all season. Even with those two songs played, the difference was CLEAR. A JSU/NCAT or JSU/Norfolk would be dope to see tho.

This competition started at 6:00 pm and it ended at 8:00 . I am from The A and expected more not my usual battle of bands.
We (JSU) were going to hood for them. NCAT were use to very gentlemen like battles. Those judges didn’t want us to drag them down

@@2kolbe010 NCAT showed 2 things. 1 - they are up for challenge. 2 - There is a black band world outside the SWAC. JSUs show had more sound and energy. NCAT was more technically complete. That’s how NCAT won. The same way that Ali beat Foreman in The Rumble in the Jungle.
If the reason they couldn’t battle was because the venue had to be cleaned for the next day, just move it to another destination and let these monsters go at it
Stand battles definitely should have been part of criteria the bands were judged by.

@@naomiiii9503 field shows are great but you naturally lose sound quality on the field, stand battles done properly will be a great opportunity for each band to show their musicianship. I think there should be required categories too. For example, 1 march, 1 jazz song, 1 balled, something old and something new.

Everyone knew the focus was on field show, it was the only category that was judged the entire season..Stands was a addon what they shouldve done was have the band of the year competition Thursday..

The only thing that could possibly give A&T the edge is their auxiliaries which wouldn’t be fair for JSU
@@MAGORDON35 everybody saw JSU botched their drills it can be difficult you dont get browny pts cause one bands drills were more difficult than the other but if u mess up somewhere u gonna get deducted.. what happen to the uncompleted square in the corner that big square wasn't a full square ppl were not where they suppose to be...JSU had problems with their lines as well especially from something u than done that everyone have seen a thousand times but u f it up that's a deduction. The JSettes made a lot of mistakes in their lines on the 50, one dancer slipped and fell didn't complete all her dance moves thats a deduction in a technical competition no matter how hard the dance move u gotta nail it. It's a technical competition apparently y'all don't know what that is.

@@ericford6383u can’t be serious…NCAT performance would not place in any formal competing….NCAT has no intro…no outro…and for HBCU distinction (no dance routine)…the drill level of difficulty was much lower than JSU…those elements alone makes them lose anywhere….they don’t even win a crowd reaction vote….even the level of difficulty and music arrangements of JSU was more technical ….your statements are not logical and can’t be proven in music or in a band competition lay out

It's not about difficulty as long as you nail that difficulty that it benefits you but you can't cheat the difficulty and think you get full credit when u mess up parts in drills it's that simple ...take the risk but don't f it up.. y'all took the risk and y'all f it up.

Friend they had 2 I saw. The J-sette fell and the box formation the line was not on the yard line. If we could post pics I could show you. NCAT had their dancer fall and their formation was off.

It is not ESPN fault. The people running and judging the event are black and from the culture. They explained they did not want the typical battle of the bands event. This is something that was said on video before the event even happened. We are lucky we got that little bit of stand action. Again, blame the old heads running the event that know the culture but do not want that
I was about to say! KB talking about A&T doesn’t have stand battle energy? A&T is almost annoyingly aggressive at times. Don’t be fooled by the nice sound nowadays, they are still that scrappy, overplaying small band/big sound from the back in the day at heart.
If they played “Set It off” after JSU’s turn toward them, they would have won more points in my book. That would have been a better Response, but JSU probably would hit them with Tom Ford or Flexin after that and ended it lol

Jackson should’ve won. They had the better sound hands down. Forget the field show. Hard to compare bands with different showmanship styles. I think any BOTB should be based on sound alone.

NCAT lines were crooked as hell. I was there, they all sounded great. JSU rocked the hell out the stand.

the mic/cam placement has a big part in the "grit" that you didnt get from T
TBH, the camera placement wasn't ideal for both bands. But the difference was still clear. JSU brought that smoke.

It’s not the camera necessarily. It’s the stadium. That’s a horrible stadium for bands. The old Georgia Dome was better in my opinion.

The A1 recording wasn't better than the Sonic Boom media video for this one...then he walked closer for A&T's segment...didn't make much difference. You can't tell the quality difference by this recording.

It is absolutely the truth that were some of old who despised everything concerning the SWAC, but especially SWAC bands. It just feels as though the old hatreds have not died. but desperately want to influence (and that negatively) all the gains that the our HBCU band culture has made.
The saying was that if certain had power that they would never give an award to a SWAC band.
