Panasonic Lumix G7 camera settings for video vlogging

- Here are my favorite settings for Panasonic Lumix G7 and G100 for shooting video vlogs without using RAW or LUTS or LOGs that require color grading. You can use this straight out of the camera as is. Its very talking head vlogger friendly requiring very little effort.
Basically- use the Cinelike D profile for video and I like to have iDynamic on auto and sometimes even highlights-2 Shadow +2 (in Highlight Shadow) but you don't need that all the time. It helps especially when outdoors and everything is high contrast with black shadows, this lightens up the shadows and boosts dynamic range without using 10 bit or anything. Also for focussing, I like to have AFC on (switch on back of camera) and focus area set to FACE EYE recognition, but sometimes the TRACKING setting works it someone can touch the screen when recording. I hope this helps!

The Lumix G7 is so damn good, it's lightweight, compact, reliable, cheap, and it's able to deliver gorgeous images.
I have mine for 8 years already, and loved it so much that I also got the successors: the G85, and G95, which are also great.
Thanks for another Great video, Markus!
Hopefully we get a G95 successor with PDAF.
I'm so glad I found this channel. I'm new to cameras and have been checking out different channels. This is my favorite one. Markus has a great personality and is extremely knowledgeable.
Based on GH4, which is very similar, I'd recommend to try the following for vlogging with G7/GH4/GH5:
1. Always shoot 50 or 60 fps, it has the greatest impact on autofocus speed (for contrast based Panasonics).
2. AF Mode set to 1-Area (in the middle) has proven more reliable and faster that eye AF. M43 depth of field is so deep that it doesn't matter if it's on your eye.
My preferred profile on the G7 is Natural with sharpness and contrast all the way down. I just bump those settings up in post a bit and the image looks great to me. I have a G85, a GX85, and the G7 with all of the profiles matched.
Master!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE my G7. Bought it new when it came out. Still going strong!
My favorite feature is the ability to use the flip out screen as a touch pad to select focus points while simultaneously using the viewfinder. It's especially useful when I'm using vintage lenses, because it allows me to select a focus point and digitally zoom in only on that point so I can pull an extremely accurate focus. Brilliant!
Thank you for all of your awesome videos! I just got my 7 year old a camera for his birthday and we watch your videos together.
I like that is has a dial setting for doing panorama shots!
Because of this video, I bought the camera a few days ago. Like you, I am super happy with the camera.
Isn't it amazing how lightweight it is?
@@MarkusPix I just bought a second one as well!! I just had to have the one with the silver top as well. Thanks for your great review on these.
I love my Lumix GX8. It's my first mirrorless camera.
Thanks for the video and the information! I have had my G7 since the end of 2017. I enjoy using it a great deal!
Thank you Marcus for this kind of videos. You definitely have helped a lot of people with your videos.
Keep them coming super informative. Thanks Markus.
Quick and to the point. Thanks Markus ! Looking GOOD as always
That answers some questions I had about my G95 settings too. I will try those out!
A really nice explanation video Markus!! Have a great day!
Great episode, Thank you!
I love my G7 the first and only MFT camera I have owned for 4 years. Originally bought it for video, but it is a great photography camera.
All I use is my G7 and the 14-140 kit lens, always does the job.
Great video! So helpful, thank you.
awesome ... the G7 is still great
Wow! I was pretty happy with my image settings from my G7 already, but these tips made it look even better! Thanks!
Asome info I love the g7 Lumix I had this camera for a while and still holding up well.with these setting definitely put a smile in my face.thanks for sharing this great useful info.have a great day Marcus.
Love it. I have found a new respect for this beauty.
Great tips!👍👍
I been doing the highlight/shadow setting just like that on my GX85. Love it and the image quality I get from it
I absolutely love this camera. First videocamera I bought after moving away from Nikon DSLR. Fantastic for video if you learn how to play around with the colors
Great advice…once again! 2015 camera love!
Greta video and tips, just recentky picked up this camera so still getting used to it. Thanks for the sharing of the video!
I mostly shoot Olympus but I am desperate to some day try the G9 II. I find when I use oly cameras without phase detect I have serious focusing issues in low light that I never have when they also have phase detect. That is why I would love to try the G9 II some day. Thanks for the info and the great videos as always.
Thanks for sharing.
I started with the G7 but the autofocus needs a lot of light to work well. It's light weight does feel very nice in the hand
The G100 is handy with the 20mm pancake or any OIS lens. The G95 is like a heavier G7 with in body stabilization. Same autofocus
After saving my pennies I got an s5iix with the Sigma 35mm f2. I love the video quality, autofocus, and recording options. Battery life sucks and the battery grip makes it big and heavy but it nails every take
Congrats for your Panasonic cameras purchases. As you have the G7 an S5II X, how good is the brightness and resolution of the G100 screen? Is it like the G7 or S5IIX? I have the S5II. Thank you.
You're the best 📷
Thanks, I just got one of these cameras this week. It’s my first 4k camera other than a go pro.
Good choice!
These specific type info Markus, you have helped with my A5100 😊.
more 5100 info on the way
@@MarkusPix Hooray 😁, I’ll take notes !
Helpful
Thank you. Most of my ( amateur/ hobby) video are machinery in poor lighting. If you have any tips along the way in your videos, they are always welcome.
I will go back and search through your existing videos as you probably have done it before. Anyway thanks
Great content, i think im going to get me lumix as well😮cheers and greetings from europe 🎉
You are the best
thank you for this video! I have that camera...rarley used it for video. to be changed...
This is my favorite camera.
thank you 👍
Very helpful
Interesting Video, thx for all the infos!
Can you Recommend any "Cheap" Canon cam for Video to be able to use EF-EFS lenses or maybe even other brands which can handle them via Adapter? I have a old 40D and its completely fine for pictures but it doesnt take videos so maybe there is a option where i can keep using my lenses.
This was my first REAL camera! And it is still a great camera! I upgraded to the G85 and the G9 but I need to get my G7 out again and use it some more!
@zackdarce I almost bought the GH6 but I held off now. I would really like to buy the G9 mark ii but my G9 still works perfectly. I don’t like that they took away the little lever and the LCD screen from the top of the camera on the G9 mark ii
Thanks for the tips. I have the old GH5 😁
Howdy Mr. Markus. Must admit I've never shot with the G-7, although I know many that sing out their praises for it. After watching your latest episode, I think I'll seek out an acquaintance (or two) and see if they'll let me borrow theirs for a look-over..
Great video on the G7, i have recently purchased a second hand one and have added a 25mm 1.7 lens for it which i haven't used yet as its a christmas present and as a novice i have the video set to p mode which i think does it all auto for you, will this be ok or what would you recommend? i would like to do some night video shoots as well, kind regards wayne.
Hello I’m using a Panasonic g85 and would like to use it on a small stop motion project while I’m healing from surgery. What lenses would you recommend? Thanks. Love your stuff!
G7 is my B cam.
Can you do one on the GH5 also 😬
Thanks ❤
😮😮 That's weird I was just looking at them online today. Tim in Ireland 🇮🇪
I received a vision two days ago as I was pondering what to do with my life. The vision said "this guy in Ireland is thinking about a G7" so I made this video
Good ❤sri
Sorry i know it's been awhile since you posted that but I' decided to upgrade to a G7 or a GH5 and have a budget. In your opinion is the extra money for the gh5 worth? I respect your opinion and everything you do. Hope you get a chance to see post. Thx
What are your thoughts on Black Magic Design?
Markus, please help. I have a small podcast and am currently using 4 cx 405 cam corders to film. However because the cameras have such tiny, and fragile hdmi ports, I use the hdmi ports constantly. Is there a camera out there that's, affordableish and would be a good choice for repeated plugging in and removal of hdmi cables? Love the cx 405s but the ports seem so fragile. I was thinking of a camera out there with an external port that I could use an adaptor that could stay plugged into the port, and take the abuse, and if necessary be removed and replaced when worn out. But I need the advice of an expert. Please help!!😢
You sure have a lot of cameras Markus . I hope you do another tutorial about my Camera the Sony CX-405. I hate recording though my window when the sun is bright and I see so many reflections in the late afternoon.

Hi Markus! Do you think you could make a video about cleaning your micro four thirds sensor? I haven't yet tried to tackle that and figured you'd be the best source for exactly how to do it. Thanks!
There are sensor cleaning kits with little disposable foam tipped sticks you wet with cleaning drops
@@MarkusPix Ah ok then! I thought you had a secret MarkusPix hack for that. I shall pick up one of those kits. Thanks Markus!

Yahoo teach us
Hi Markus. First, thanks for your videos! You say is lightweight, but I dont consider so at least compared to APSC (I have been Olympus user, now Fuji… and increase in quality vs. Increase in size for me is clear). I think m4/3 and even APSC are losing the advantage they had on doing convinient cameras/lenses.
Yes the new M43 cameras are as big and heavy as full frame nowadays, but I guess you've never held a G7 in your hand (it came out over 8 years ago) and is lighter than any APSC camera out there! Its insanely light, like an empty plastic box
@@MarkusPix True, I never held! I was thinking in latest m4/3 from OM and Panasonic. Thanks Markus!
🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
yahoo I never had a micro 4/3 camera can you go into more detail about the difference between a micro 4/3 versus crop sensor camera versus full frame all my cameras are full frame, but been looking at some Fujifilm micro 4/3
👍
Neat, Samsung nx1/500 settings next?
Go into every colour profile and set Red 1.00 - Green 0.95 - Blue 1.00 (NX cameras have oversaturation of green channels)
Turn sharpness all the way down -10 because this camera over-samples its 4k so its already super sharp.
You can play around with the contrast settings, in my opinion I just leave everything on 0 or normal, the best colour profiles in my opinion are portrait and normal, these are super nice outdoor, the camera struggles a lot in poor light situations, here I would suggest just using normal picture profile and avoid going above 1600 ISO at all costs. (NX1 has bad noise pattern)
Honestly, every colour profile in the NX1 and NX500 are amazing and fun to play with, avoid shooting in Gamma DR on the Samsung cameras, its awful and extremely difficult to colour grade, the results are not worth it Gamma C has tendency to oversaturate but you can turn down saturation levels in the profile, these are cameras you need to set colour in-body and use as is, you can tweak it a bit after in post, it allows 1 stop shadow recovery if you did not crush the shadows.
Both NX1 and NX500 are extremely bad highlight dynamic range, expose for the sky, and then pull shadows in post, you should try master black levels at 5 but nothing more as it only increase or decrease black levels it does not actually raise shadows. Turn smart range+ on as it does help a little bit with shadows and highlights.
Neither NX1 nor NX500 has anyway of adding a curve, only smart range+ adds a slight curve but its nothing to write home about thats why you should avoid blowing the highlights (sky) as much as possible and instead expect to lift shadows in post manually, but never expect miracles.
You can play with the colour settings in each profile, in my opinion every colour profile is basically a slide film, NX1 and NX500 also have bad JPEG engine, so its best to shoot full resolution JPEG with super fine setting, and then downscale from 28 megapixels to 12 - 20 megapixels in post, this gives super quality.
Thanks Markus! By the way for the Sony Rx100 mark 7 , do you use the standard setting or the neutral if you just want to get a quick video recording?
Any suggestion will be helpful for me to try.
Thank you!
Why not try the settings yourself and see what you prefer.
@@leonarddavis8449 thank you for your reply but Markus is the GOAT when it comes to that tiny point and shoot. I know what you mean and I’m just asking here for MARKUS’ opinion so that I can give it a try.
I just use standard, but that's just me, matter of taste I guess.
@@MarkusPix thank you Markus🙏
For me you are the GOAT when it comes to Sony RX100 mark 7. I appreciate your input.
I experimented with Cine D and there's something about the colour reproduction I don't like. I tried Cine V and it looks so much more natural to my eye.
V is way too saturated and contrasty for me
Thoughts on a good compact lens ?
Olympus OR Panasonic?
Panasonic LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm F/2.8 ASPH. O.I.S. H-HS12035
Purchased G7 after watching your video. $500 for body and 3 lenses was worth a shot. Have run about 1000 pic. & 50 vid. through it. Only happy with a couple after extensive post edit work.
Honestly my S21 Ultra phone takes better pictures most of the time. Even with both on tripod.
Would like to get a better lense with OIS and try to make this G7 work.
Buying used I don't know if camera or lense may be damaged.
Thank you
The 14mm f2.5 is a nice compact sharp lens. The 25mm 1.4 is awesome and the olympus 45 1.8 is great for portraits.
@@MarkusPix Thank you Markus. Finding many opinions about these online. Focusing on the 25mm 1.4. $250-300 avg. Wondering if the 25mm 1.7 for $100-200 is that much less quality. I know you have tried / tested them all.
Both are good but the 1.4 is better
🙏👏👏👏🙏
Buddy, weird question but are you comfortable telling me where you buy your shirts? I don't mean to freak you out it's just that you have the coolest wardrobe. ha. Sorry man.
Bo
Is that the Olympus 60mm f2.8 macro lens on the G7 in your hand?
Yup

We have a G85 can you do a video about that camera today?
Today? As in run out, buy one and make a video about it right now today?
@@MarkusPix as today being after so many years since release !! A retro video about a camera you get low priced !! Thanks for being so much fun!!! Loved you had Camera conspiracis as a guest in your home!!
I love that kids on TikTok are “rebelling” and scrounging for old point and shoot camera to take photos with
I don't seem to have a Cinelike D option....
G7 > MENU > REC > Photo Style > Cinelike D
ah, forgot to put myself in video mode, sigh :P
I still have GH2 cameras, just not doing enough to justify the money to buy something "better".
Is this a micro 4/3 camera?
yes
Never a video about DJI drones
Panasonic Lumia G7 background blur settings
uh, have the lens at f1.4 or 1.8
Well, I got the morning crust out of my eyes and it was over!
i prefer gx85 or gx9, rangefinder style body so much prettier
and heavier
G7 is basically the stills version of GH4, but its shame that G9 weights twice as much as the G7 and then the G9II weights even more...
That's what lackeys are for...
Recognizing my face without focusing on it is how my grandma got around talking to me. I wonder if she used to work for Panasonic....humm....
hahahaha
Instead trying to deal with focus problems, just get a Sony :))
Finally, a realistic comment.
