This was written by Ad Rock, Rick Ruben, and Run DMC members. The beat came out like this due to flipping the tape and playing it in reverse on an 808 machine. Lots of stories about who flipped it, but I believe it’s most often attributed to Adam Yauch (MCA). MCA was another artist gone too soon.

    • @TheOriginalFILIBUSTA

The beastie boys used a brand new e-mu 12 or 1200 for Paul revere.
They took a 808 beat ,put through a sampler and then flipped it/reversed it..
It was actually really innovative back then, and would have been quite difficult to do using analogue sequencers that were triggered.
They are and we're absolutely pioneer's of hiphop, not just with what they were saying.
    But the actual music too.
Not just the electronic side, the actual instruments they play too...

I think it was Chuck d or run dmc or someone that was a big rapper from the 80s that said the best kept secret in 80s rap was that the beastie boys had all the best beats. RICK RUBIN. Co founder of def jam. Produced this whole album

Back when I was a young whipper snapper and subwoofers first came on the block or in my car this hit so hard on that bass line.

Keep in my there’s someone running the turntables and mixing and scratching those beats live all thru the song. I f’d up may subwoofers to this album! Couldn’t even see out my mirrors from day bass!

This song was the first time I ever saw a speaker go backwards. Had some Pioneer 20 inch speakers on a Sony stereo system. When you see the speaker pull inward it makes your head spin.

1987 - My senior year in high school. Of course my children are familiar with all of the Beastie Boys discography; It's fun to see more of the younger generations enjoying our generation of music. Nursing Homes are going to be a blast - especially if cannabis gets passed at a federal level. Please register to vote and vote in every election from local to federal. js :D

I remember walking around the neighborhood with a little boombox on my shoulder listening to Beastie boys licensed to Ill. I'm 46 now and somehow I mean the prayer made it out to The sound shop at the mall and I seen it the cover look cool I didn't know if it was rap, rock, or what... They changed my life

The best part of this reaction is her smile. Music used to ve fun. Make you smile. Make you move and enjoy a story. Im so glad you experienced the beastie boys. Remember her face as th sing plays. She was happy. Tge kids today .. the entire scene from rap to rock. Ts garbage. No soul. No heart. I had to buy this cassette 3x cause i popped them. Then trued the pencil trick...bought another. Everyone should hear music and grin like she did.

The high hats and bass on this track are all played in reverse. My friends and I would get a turn table play it backwards and make new tracks with it.
Mike D is Michael Diamond he is Screech's from Saved by the Bell cousin.

I'm late to your reaction of this. I just thought I'd type in and see if there were reactions to this song. This is my all time favorite Beastie Boys song. I uses to have 12" subwoofers in my car back in the day and I used to bump this song constantly. That bass! I still know every single word too haha. I really miss music from back then. It's funny ..my son is 22 and he started listening to them too and he loves this song also. Nowwwww here's a little story I got to tell about 3 bad brothers you know so well........
Love that you loved the beat and story telling like I do .
