I was on the USS Theodore Roosevelt when she was commissioned (yes, I am a plankowner) and spent four years onboard ships company. We did a North Atlantic cruise and I can remember seeing this ship (one of the four, can't remember which) and was in awe. I was on the flight observation deck watching flight ops when she steamed into view. It looked like a small island moving across the water. The screening ships were tiny next to her. Then to my astonishment a Soviet helicopter headed our way landed on our flight deck! A dozen of our medical corpsman ran out to her. They had a medical emergency and did not have a surgeon on board to perform the operation so they actually ask for help and we did. It turned out one of their sailors fell down a shaft doing maintenance and was seriously fucked up. But they guy lived and we loaded him into one of our helos and took him back. They steamed along side us for seven hours. All those guns and missiles within visual range...
Gotta at least be a little heartwarming to see something good between the countries happen. Plus, they probably found some aspect about our ships that put them in awe! Good story!
Actually, the MIG25 Foxbat DID have a similar control system as the missile systems of the Kirov Class. In the MIG25, there is an on board computer that the primary aircraft can datalink and act as command and control for up to 3 additional MIG25 aircraft coordinating missile attacks, flight direction, and mission and radar data essentially acting as a single aircraft. Also, the Kirov Class ship was originally carrying what intelligence believed to be a laser projector and possibly several projectors acting as additional missile and small boat attack capability. Similar to the American Athena laser system designed for small boat and anti drone warfare. Also check out the IRBIS-E which at least in the aircraft world is as advanced as the American Phased Array systems, so don't discount them using a naval variant of this system either now, or in the future.
So they just took a huge piles of missiles, guns a radars and built a ship around it. And then added some missiles. and some more guns. And Torpedos. Oh and Helicopters. Multiple helicopters. And some more missiles.
Typical feature of Soviet cold war ships. The Russians decided to stick with it for the older vessels. New ones like the Admiral Gorshkov have grey decks.
As someone who been in the royal norwegian navy. Ive come across this ship out in the sea and its a true beauty. Ontop of it. It is the biggest surface ship threat to any nato fleet. And a funfact is that US carrier strike group formations were made based on countering theese Ships. And thats enough to explain how potentially powerfull theese kirovs are. And as we learned onboard. Kirovs are russias counter towards US carrier threat. Overall also had a friendly conversation with them over the radio. They joked about having so much missiles onboard that if they were to blow up they would cause a massive tsunami. So pls dont shoot. Lol
They were originally going to call it the "Stronger Than Batman, Spider-man, The Incredible Hulk, and Superman Combined". Turns out "Kirov" strikes more fear in their enemies' hearts.
My family has a long military tradition, my grandfather fought in the Korean War, my father served in the navy during the Cold War, and my older brother fought during the Invasion of Iraq. During the Cold War, my father was the marine pilot of the missile cruiser he was in when his captain ordered him to sail towards a particular ship, and that particular ship was this monster. When my father realized, he and the captain had this conversation: Pilot: "Uhm, captain, isn't that a Kirov battlecruiser?" Captain: "Yes, that she is." Pilot: "With all due respect sir, but are you sure we should approach her?" Captain: "Yes, we have our orders to monitor her up close." Pilot: "But sir, isn't that thing built to take on an entire carrier group? That thing can screw us over ten times." Captain: "I know, and I said the exact same thing to Pacific Command." They spent the next 3 days just staring at the Kirov doing nothing. Having allied ships nearby didn't help make them feel safe. Until one day my father's captain decided to communicate with the Kirov's captain. My father had gone to get coffee when the captain communicated so when he came back they were already halfway through the conversation, and it left my father pretty confused: Captain: "How long have you been out on the ocean with her (Kirov)?" Russian: "About 5 months now. Long missions tiresome, what you have for breakfast?" Captain: "A plate of scrambled eggs and bread, and a nice cup of coffee." Russian: "Coffee? Your coffee any good?" Captain: "Coffee is great, thanks for asking." Russian: "Bahh, coffee here is dog shit. But our vodka, is fucking good." Captain: "You're allowed to drink inside the ship?" Russian: "Yes, but only when going home from mission, but you didn't hear from me, ok?" Captain: "Hahaha, I hear you." Russian: "Hahaha." The following day, the Kirov finally sailed away and so they were also ordered to withdraw back. With all those allied ships behind them, it was actually that conversation that relieved the tension on the men. Despite the Kirov bristling with so much weaponry, that conversation kind of humanized the Kirov for them, that behind that ship was just another navy officer who was just as human as they were, tired on these missions, and were just following orders. Not some big, villainous commie with an itchy trigger finger out to erase them.
@Murat Gadjiev Well I was born in Soviet Union, many of my family were executed or send to northern regions, just because they were wrong ethnics, how thats not considered nazism? My grandmother parents were shot because they came from USA to build your beloved communism, they were used for several years because they knew hot to maintain factory production, what average commie slave from countryside did not understood. They were used and executed as "american spies", then from my grandfather side, my great great grandfather and his brother were executed as terrorists for protecting their house and property from real terrorists those your beloved communists, and others were send to north as "wrong ethnic" group... commies are nazis, there are no difference.

@William Snow umm she is designed to take out an entire carriers air wing and keep going.... did you even watch the video? I don't think air craft carriers are going to stay dominant due to the development of the zircon missile and continued development of rail guns.
@William Snow ummm rail gums fire minimum mach 8.... Mach 8 > Mach 5. with a sufficient targeting computer it becomes a game of duck hunt.... that is how technological advancements work. anti-air missiles are also faster then aircraft because they are missiles. this isn't WW2 anymore, technology changes.
@William Snow There hasn’t been a major naval war since WW2, only a series of smaller conflicts. The Falklands War demonstrated that while aircraft are capable, surface action groups can fend them off. That is even more true today. Aircraft can be shot down from dozens and sometimes hundreds of kilometers away. Missiles are much faster and more maneuverable and modern versions are not easily fooled by chaff or ECM. You’re talking about these ships like they’re still using autocannons with human gunners… Which hasn’t been the case since about 1960, before this ship was even a blueprint.

@@bestamerica Nah that depends, sure battleships are really though nuts and crack and almost impossible to sink without holes below the waterline.... but I don't think the Iowa would have much fight left into her when her entire superstructue is turned into one big inferno after a few direct hits from those Granit/Shipwrecker missiles.
The armor on the Iowa class ships is impenetrable to anything the Kirov has, the entire point of reactivating them was to provide a hard counter. The rest of the fleet would be dead but the faster Iowa would chase the Kirov down and kill it with the main weapons. The superstructure of the Iowa is not relevant to it's ability to kill surface threats.
Most AWDs, DDHs and FFHs have hangars at main deck level. Typical compliment is one or two medium-sized multipurpose helicopters (Sea Kings, Romeos, etc) normally equipped for anti-submarine operations. Even the Ticonderoga-Class CCGs have their hangars at deck level. The Kirov-Class is an anomaly in this regard that she is a surface combatant whose primary weapons system is her onboard missile armament with an internal hangar serviced by an elevator. The only other "cruiser" which ever had this feature was the British Invincible-Class Through Deck Cruiser (official designation, though they were in practice light aircraft carriers)
Except for all the Cleveland class and Baltimore class cruisers, all built during WWII. They had below deck hangars in the stern portion of the ships. These were used to store up to four float planes that were bought up by elevator and then mounted on the catapult using the crane visible over the stern of the ships. There are two basic reasons why this was abandoned by the US Navy. The main deck hangers generally provide more room than a below decks hanger, and the big hole in the stern weakens the ships structure. At least one of the cruisers mentioned had the hanger doors blown off as the result of a bomb landing near the hanger. The second major reason was water ingress. There was never found a way to seal the hanger doors sufficiently when the ship was taking water from a following sea. I can't imagine that Kirov wouldn't have the same problem. .

Hallo from Greece . I am an active OR-10 for the Greek Navy, and i specialise in ASW (Anti Submarine Warfare) , for the past 15 years. You forgot to mention the hall mounted sonar that they have. It is very low frequency and has an extream output power. That means it can detect submarines from over 50000 yards if i am not mistaken. And they also have sonar-buoys that they can deploy from the helicopters creating a barrier from miles and miles away. As you know the economy of Greece is down the toilet and we still are able to use them... So unless there are at least 6 Subs against her don't rule her out just yet...I like your videos greetings fom Greece!!!
The AK-130 are such beasts. A 130mm cannon with 90RPM alone is a pretty good defence against close aircraft / missiles with its 30m ball of death when those rounds airburst.
I hope the Kirov has some really good damage control features. With all that high explosive and two reactors, one good hit to a magazine could turn it into a several kiloton dirty bomb.
@@ericolsen5592 Kashtan? Slow, primitive american missiles? Easily any day! Single Kashtan was in 80s capable to track 4 missiles and fire on 2 of them with missiles. Efective range was 8km and engage time was 8 seconds for 8km perimeter and 5 seconds for 2km perimeter (for shorter range were used only guns). Reload time for misiles was 8 seconds. So taking speed of harpoon into consideration, which is cca 240m/s, first two Harpoons are eliminated 8km from Kashtan, another two are eliminated 6 km from Kashtan, another two 4,8km from Kashtan, next two 3,6km from Kashtan and next two Harpoons does not exist, because American ships carried only 8 of them. Missile defense on Kirov was virtually impenetrable by american AShW missiles thanks to fact, that those missiles were and still are total shit.
@@tomascernak6112 You think we only use Harpoons? You simply cannot deflect such a high volume of Harpoons, Hellfires, JDAMs, TOWs, 5-inch guns, high-velocity electromagnetic projectiles, topedos, and anything else carried in a carrier battle group. CBGs were literally created in response to the Kirov and they get more advanced every year. The only threats to the modern US Navy are in the South China Sea.

Love the Kirov. An iconic Soviet Missile Cruiser that has as much good looks as it has sheer firepower. For me, this is one of the most impressive surface ships of any Navy.
None of the anti ship missiles fielded by the NATO members weigh as much as a ton. That shipwreck fielded by the Kirov is a seven ton missile. OMG. The Russians are not bent on force projection like US though. They are actually very defensive minded so they don't need as many of anything as we do. The purpose of the Kirov is to go out and give a very warm Russian welcome to an invading Armada or Carrier group.

She is indeed a beautiful ship...always did like that flaring, elongated bow. I'm glad they're being modernized and brought back. At least one country in the world still likes big ships bristling with firepower. (No, the Zumwalts do NOT count...those things are unnatural.)
The Zumwalt can only carry 20-80 missiles, has 0 functional guns, and 0 depth charges, and poor anti-ship capability. To make things worse, we are only getting 3 of them. We need more Zumwalts, and we need to add more weapons on it. Problem is the budget. We cant get a new gun for it because people are being indecisive with the budget.
@@usaisthebestiockdownpoiice816 Zumwalts might be getting or already have railguns powered by nuclear reactors, but as allways the best toys are kept a secret.
@@jamariooo There is no secret about the Zumwalts gun. The Pentagon does not want railguns because railguns are horrible. If you do basic research about railguns, you'd find just how outdated the idea is. The future of gun technology is smart ammunition which can be fired on already existing guns. Whats the point of a railgun when you can use hypersonic gun fired guided missiles with scramjet engines. A big advantage of these too is that older guns can use such ammunition. But railguns cannot share ammunition with already existing, advanced gun systems. Railguns are also unreliable, have low lifespan, have high signature, cannot be mounted on already existing ships, cant deal with numerous targets, requires an external power source. With new advances in technology, hypersonic munitions are now possible. And as technology improves, the easier it is for us to use such munitions. Railguns are old steampunk technology which might be good for novels and sci fi films, but its not the future.
@@usaisthebestiockdownpoiice816 Ok, I stand corrected, but basic railgun research will also reveal that their mach 7 projectile launch capabilities far outclass older guns, so they are not horrible, they are a worthwhile consideration, they are also oppositte of "steampunk" style. I do see now though how they are far outclassed by hypersonic gun fired guided missiles that you mentioned, thus rendering railguns pointless.
@@jamariooo They are horrible. Based on military research, not just in the US, but also in India, China, and Russia, people have found out that they do not live up to their hype. Being able to use mach 7 projectiles is not special especially if we consider that the latest missiles today including air defence missiles can reach similar, if not faster speeds. Some ballistic and anti-ballistic missiles and warheads can even reach mach 10 and beyond. Also launch cells on a ship can fire numerous missiles over and over. A railgun cannot, you can only fire a few shots every 5 minutes. A railgun is not reliable enough, heats up quickly, not durable enough for sustained fire, has poor firerate, and destroys itself after only a few shots. An advanced gun system with smart ammunition outclasses a railgun that can only fire once or twice every 5 minutes. Also new ammunition can be fired from already existing guns. Advanced gun systems(except railguns) can be mounted on already existing ships. With sabot munition you can achieve hypersonic speeds, and a flat trajectory even without needing a railgun. Now, what if you combine a sabot with a ram/scramjet engine. An advanced gun system with such an ammunition(already available today thanks to advances in technology), can shoot high velocity guided missiles, and hit targets many kilometres away. A good example, though not really the same, is the Koksan artillery piece, which can reach distances as far as 60 kilometres. And that is, with a low velocity projectile, with a solid propellant rocket. A ram/scram jet engine, can reach distances, and speeds far greater than that. We must take into account the fact that other guns besides railguns, benefit from advances in technology too. A modern advanced gun system today(except railguns), can outperform even the largest and most powerful guns existing some decades earlier. Thanks to new ammunition, firecontrol, sensors, and advances in material and chemical science, AI and computing technology. And whats great about this too, is that already existing guns can receive an upgrade from these advances. A railgun cannot be mounted on an already existing ship. It cannot share ammunition with already existing guns, even with other advanced gun systems. A railgun also requires an external power source to fire. Other guns, except most gatling systems, don't need an external power source.

Yeah Ivan, add some more stuff on your ships..the Kirov promotes the idea that "stuff" on the outside of a ship or airplane makes it very UN-stealthy--this thing must look like a 10 story building on radars of Aegis ships...
Well Kirov was built when 'stealth' against radar didn't really exist. Kirov was based on the salvo combat model with the technology available at the time. It was supposed to be the main offensive firepower of a fleet instead of the typical carrier in a Western navy. A carrier isn't particularly required for the Soviet navy due to its geopolitical location. Kirov's design comes from the unique requirements of the Soviet navy. It's unfair to judge it based on a MODERN Western perspective.
Basically the Kirov works through a simple method of overwhelming firepower at extreme range with massive short range anti-aircraft capacity, essentially exactly what It was designed for, a counter to a carrier group. And yes while its lacking some major tech compared to western navies (its radar and sonar systems, and fire control are dated to say the least), it still has the capacity to pose a real threat to any surface ship. True its radar profile is massive but lets be honest, you can't hide a surface ship from anyone these days, all you can do is make it a little harder to lock onto, and even then thats never going to be enough. Only issue the Kirov's have that shouldn't be overlooked is their main anti-ship missiles are outdated, and they already need replacing with the newer P-800's or BrahMos missiles, which is already on the table with no firm date.
Excuse me please for my English, but I need to share my emotions with all... I sow this ship in life one year ago and is seems even more huge in real life. He was on the raid of Kronstadt military port that is nearby Saint-Petersburg city. Peter the Great was like huge mountain or island. Even the shadow on the water line was huge and impressed me so much...
That would be Dmitriy Donskoy. The last active Typhoon. Used mainly as R&D and testing platform. I assume the footage is from the naval parade last summer, when Peter the Great and Donskoy visited Kronstad naval base in St. Petersburg to take part in Russian Navy celebrations. Due to nature of the visit Donskoy sailed much of the Baltic in surface sailing and was constantly paired/accompanied by Peter the Great.
@@danishpuma apparently there was rather large inspection section at the Bridge to make sure Russians didn't break the laws of seas while passing the bridge. Also lots of evidence gathering equipment present. Even without the Danish military presence. Lots of citizens volunteering to help in the surveillance. :)
Peter the Great is literally an entire aircraft carrier group (minus carrier itself) packed into one ship. Which is great engineering achievement, but on the other hand - a ship that is stuffed with so much weapons of different kind is a nightmare for mechanics, and its operational and maintaining cost is insane.
Send this krasivaya devushka into the coastal waters off africa, with the sole mission of anti pirate operations. Film it. Put it in a movie. I'd pay for it. As would many others I suspect.....
Consider a question, battle cruisers of the Second World War were removed for being obsolete by having artillery, the Kirov class are basically a huge platform of attack and defense at first it had thought that they were part of a fleet of an underwater aircraft carrier, destroyer support ships and these battle cruisers supported by naval aviation composed of the TU22M, the Russian fleet unlike the American fleet is not structured to navigate the seas of the world patrolling maritime areas away from their bases , but is projected for an effective action within its area of influence, the Mediterranean, the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov, the Pacific, the Baltic etc. The projection of the Russian naval power is established to be represented by its submarines of different classes, the Kirov class were conceived to support a group of aircraft carrier cruisers. The Kirov Class is a ship that together with a carrier cruiser is a powerful deterrent against any class of ship, remember that the Kuznetsov are the only aircraft carrier cruisers with offensive - defensive capacity, acting with the Movska class destroyers and with the Kirov would be enough to inflict very serious damage on his adversaries.
its a perfect ship but it was built in the wrong era. the reason why USN just focuses on Carrier groups os because of Air superiority. they can launch planes in great distances without being detected and its escorts (destroyers, cruisers and BB) can defend the carrier from the missile. Kirov fighting 2 or more carrier is like a man being attack by bees. it will be yamato &musashi 2.0 Kirov can act as part of the carrier group. she can protect the carrier perfectly and offer a great deal of hardship against incoming subs. but kirov fighting a carrier group and hoping winning it is mere a dream.let's not forget the lesson of Tirpitz, Yamato and Musashi, the victims of air superiority of the carriers ps: carrier group can compose of a core of 3 or more carriers, several cruisers and battleship and destroyers from the outside as vanguards.
Murica Chan I agree but the story of the Yamato was in a large part due to the wrong type of weaponry. She could not kill the bees as you sugest. I suspect that is not the case here at all. This thing has long, medium, near, and CIWS missiles, guns, torpedoes, and who knows what else. A totally different animal.
@@AnimaRandom the new Russian hypersonic anti ship missile can not be stopped by anything a current US carrier group have...Kiev can sink a whole group from outside plane range...

However Building the Garshkov Class frigates was wrought with delays and it was an undertaking just for those 2 so far, i am skeptical of them being actually built
Defensive asset that could go offensive when needed perhaps. And yes yes yes to all those who said USN is greater, so what is the point? Russia is modernizing its navy and mostly for defensive purposes, it is not like they will wage a war with the US right? If you think they are not a threat, why make a fuzz about all this USN is more powerful? All of us know that don’t we? So just keep it to yourself and enjoy the cool stats of the warship and not being bias in the comments, we are here to know about the ships and tech, not comparing whose gentleman sausage is bigger. Good info as always matsimus.
Yeah the purpose of these ships is not to cow the USN, but more likely to support it's vassal states and bully it's neighbors. The Russians have a nuclear arsenal to keep the americans at arms length, they would be foolish to attempt to compete directly with the blue water strength of the USN.
Trust me, Russia really doesn't seek conflict with America. They fully recognise America's capabilities too. (Yes, these two points are separate, that must be emphasised!)
Wow!!!! Finally someone on UA-cam with a brain!!!!!! No disrespect intended. Very insightful comment here. Loved the gentleman sausage bit!!! That was awesome!!!!!! People are always comparing then complaining about "Well, this navy has this and their navy has these and blah blah blah!!!" It's nice to just see a review of the ship!!! Doesn't matter whose ship!!! Russia does not need a global reach for her Navy, Russia has already the largest territory and sufficient access to the seas so there is no need to project power to the rest of the world and hence the focus is on strategic defence.
@@heathermarcoux294 What's the issue? Russia has 37700 km of sea borders, access to the Mediterranean via the Black Sea, the Arctic seas (of which a fair chunk is Russian territorial waters), the Pacific, moreover the largest land locked sea (Caspian sea, which is home to a flotilla)... so not sure what you're on about.
@@snaxx82 To get to the Atlantic, the Russian fleets have a few narrow choke points to choose from. These choke points are surrounded by nations who would likely oppose Russia in the event of another global conflict. Caspian sea has limited strategic use because, as you said, it's landlocked. Russia does have a lot of coastline along the Pacific ocean, unfortunately that coastline is on the complete opposite side of the country from Russia's most populated areas, and it's a VERY large country, which presents a logistics problem. The northern coastline is huge, which may sound like a good thing, except it's often covered by ice sheets making it either impossible or very difficult to traverse. Not to mention the fact that there is very little development in those areas so it's really more of an obstacle than a viable shipping route (except for submarines).
@@heathermarcoux294 Heather, with all due respect, you are deluded or blinded. you simply dont seem to understand the concept that countries dont need to "rule" the seas (or in fact, neighbours - the only trouble here stems from US&UK state sponsored Islamic State jihadists or Ukrainian fascists) in order stand up for themselves. Russia is the largest country on Earth, there is no need to pester the rest of world or bomb third tier countries to shits. If I were an astronaut, I'd rather travel to space using the time and tested soyuz than US shuttle or spaceX junk.
This ship's amazing, truly. So is the Typhoon class sub behind it though, and those are VERY old tech now but certainly no less dangerous. Typhoons are unbelievably large for a submarine.
Yes, the Russians believe that big steel objects above the water make ships way less stealthy. But then, their admirals aren't stealthy just look at them--covered with about 400 medals (can that be from all the battles they have won or is it Stolen Honor--Russian Style). But they do have some really HOT Russian women in their army....hey these numbers will float millions of toasts at the bar---ua-cam.com/video/S6v0MBCNRr4/v-deo.html
Just imagine to have this ship in WW2 era. She could solo win the war. Just imagine how easy that would be striking whole fleets with with absolute ze-ro danger and satanic laugh on the captain's deck.
I believe there is a Japanese anime movie or series that explores this concept: a modern Japanese frigate or destroyer is send back in time trying to change the outcome of WW2.... only to end up single handedly wrecking the Yamato in self defence after the Imperial navy misidentified her. Sadly I cannot remember the name anymore....
It would take well coordinated tactics, both offensive and defensive, and concentrated firepower, air and surface, and submarine to defeat this formidable ship. She's a modern day Bismarck. But even more lethal. She would have to be considered a priority target to be destroyed. It would be a deadly, bloody confrontation for both opponents no doubt. U.S. NAVY vet. ✌🏻🇺🇸
Russian ships use different pronoun conventions than English vessels. forum.worldofwarships.com/topic/122207-russian-ship-genders/ The Pyotr Velikiy (Peter the Great) would use the male pronoun, because it's named for a male figure, where as all British and American ships would be female, regardless of their namesakes.
I think I saw it in port when I was in the Russian Navy (Northern Fleet). Definitely remember the Kuznetsov. As for the future armament - probably S-500 and S-400/S-300PMU missiles (Redut cells) for air defence and ABM duties, Pantsir turrets in place of Kashtans, UKSK-M cells in place of the current ASMs which will have Kalibrs, Zirkons and anti-submarine missiles, the in-development Minoga class helicopters in place of the Ka-27 family, new phased array radars and electronic, C4 systems. The RBUs and cannons will likely be replaced with something more modern. Well it's quite possible that they will economise than go all out as well.
It was also killed by the F16 which was every bit as capable and then some. There is no market for the F20 at this point that isn’t filled by one of the thousands of F16s already out there
keith moore Then how come Northrop couldn’t find a single buyer? Not only the USAF but anywhere? The fact is the F-20 was trying to compete against planes like the F16c that did the same role at the same level or better. Customers didn’t want the F20 they wanted the F16
The retrofitting of its sister ship includes Vertical Launch Systems for approximately 80 Zircon and P-800 Onix anti-ship missiles and Kalibr cruise missiles in place of the 20 P-700 Granit (Shipwreck) launchers. Later the Pyotr Velikiy will get them, too.
Kirov class is actually an once used UAVs carrier this day. Armed with Tsirkon/Onyx/Kalibr, it has ability to sink at least two US aircraft carrier groups at once.
So realize that ships like this, just like the Nimitz-class and Iowa-class, need escorts to survive in a near-peer threat environment. In the case of the Nimitz, the Burkes and Ticos were put out to provide a level of protection on top of the fleet defense mission that the Nimitz provides. A submarine threat to the Kirov is not a threat she bears alone. Oddly enough the Kiev-class was an ideal anti-sub platform with it's helos, when coupled with ASW-dedicated surface combatants. Now that the Kuznetsov has taken over as the carrier, it still retains that helo capability, but is more tuned to also provide air cover for a fleet that is also protected by that S-300 capability provided by the Kirov.
Russian navy doctrine assures that in case of combat engagement these big warships to be escorted by smaller destroyers, subs and anti-submarine ships.
True but the Kirov must look like a 10 story building on our radars. The US Navy and other western countries are designing ships for stealth and radar detection so minimized they look like a whale while the Kirov must look like a 10 story building sitting in the ocean. But the Russians have it right by going for better / faster submaries which to my view is the future of any navy...
It is a battlecruiser in the same way the Alaska-class were battlecruisers. That is, not at all - both the Alaska and the Kirov were large heavy cruisers. The Soviets called it a battlecruiser for psychological purposes, the same way they called some of their armies "shock armies."
@@faalsan1918 Size and weapons do not a battlecruiser make. "Battlecruiser" is a very specific term used to describe a very specific ship - it is a vessel that has a main battery comparable to a battleship, but thinner armor and faster speed. The standard test is whether or not a ship could withstand a hit from its own shells. A battleship can, a battlecruiser cannot. The Kirov is not a battlecruiser by any proper naval definition.
@@faalsan1918 No, the terms do NOT change over time. A destroyer 70 years ago is the same as a destroyer today. It is not a battlecruiser because it does not fit the definition of the term.
@@faalsan1918 Lolz No, they are not different. A destroyer from 1944 and a modern destroyer fill the exact same role. The only difference is their technology. The same is true of cruisers and frigates. Armament and role defines a ship's classification, with size being secondary. A frigate 70 years ago did NOT fill the role of the destroyer. That role was filled BY THE DESTROYER. The term "frigate" is the oldest in ship classification parlance, referring to smaller, faster, more lightly armed ships compared to the ships of the line used at the time. These ships were used most often for maritime patrol and interdiction. By the late-1800s, the term had fallen out of use with most navies, and tyoically referred to non-ironclad sailing ships. By WWI, the term was seldom used. However, by the 1940s, a small, fast, comparatively lightly armed ship known as a "destroyer escort" came into use, and its role was to screen destroyers during detached surface actions, as well as anti-submarine warfare, convoy escort, minelaying, and coastal patrol. These ships would eventually become known as frigates, and the modern frigate retains many of the same roles as their WWII predecessors, as the U.S Navy's Oliver Hazard Perry-class demonstrated. Destroyers were originally tasked with screening and anti-submarine warfare, though by the 40s, this had evolved into predominantly anti-air in addition to anti-submarine roles. The Arleigh Burke-class are an excellent modern example of this. Cruisers were designed to screen and support battleships, as well as hunt destroyer flotillas, though by the 40s, American cruisers were also used to screen aircraft carriers from air attack and provide naval gunfire support during amphibious operations. The Ticonderoga-class epitomize this philosphy. While the technology used on these ships has changed over the years, their roles have effectively remained unchanged over the last 70 years.

When my father realized, he and the captain had this conversation:
Pilot: "Uhm, captain, isn't that a Kirov battlecruiser?"
Captain: "Yes, that she is."
Pilot: "With all due respect sir, but are you sure we should approach her?"
Captain: "Yes, we have our orders to monitor her up close."
Pilot: "But sir, isn't that thing built to take on an entire carrier group? That thing can screw us over ten times."
Captain: "I know, and I said the exact same thing to Pacific Command."
They spent the next 3 days just staring at the Kirov doing nothing. Having allied ships nearby didn't help make them feel safe. Until one day my father's captain decided to communicate with the Kirov's captain. My father had gone to get coffee when the captain communicated so when he came back they were already halfway through the conversation, and it left my father pretty confused:
Captain: "How long have you been out on the ocean with her (Kirov)?"
Russian: "About 5 months now. Long missions tiresome, what you have for breakfast?"
Captain: "A plate of scrambled eggs and bread, and a nice cup of coffee."
Russian: "Coffee? Your coffee any good?"
Captain: "Coffee is great, thanks for asking."
Russian: "Bahh, coffee here is dog shit. But our vodka, is fucking good."
Captain: "You're allowed to drink inside the ship?"
Russian: "Yes, but only when going home from mission, but you didn't hear from me, ok?"
Captain: "Hahaha, I hear you."
Russian: "Hahaha."
The following day, the Kirov finally sailed away and so they were also ordered to withdraw back.

I like how the Kirovs helicopter hanger is below deck
Why? And I thought most ship have the choppers stored below deck.
I can't imagine that Kirov wouldn't have the same problem. .

US Warships: *Spam missile on Kirov*
Kashtan: _Are you sure about that_
CIWS systems are pretty much last resort weapons. They can't reliably deflect a high volume of missiles.
@@tomascernak6112 Even a high tech CIWS can't deflect everything. The Kashtan is no doubt an effective defense, but none of them are foolproof including our own Phalanx and Goalkeeper systems
@@ericolsen5592 Yes, you can use only Harpoons. You do not have any usable missiles to do that job yet. Hellfires fired from what? We are on Sea. JDAM is unable to hit moving targets (its is GPS suite for dumb bombs). TOWs .... ufff, are you serious now? 5 Inch guns? Well if engagement will be done at 10-15 km, they can be pretty dangerous. Otherwise, nope. railguns? What year is today, I thought that 2050 will be in 30 years ;-) Terpedoes - well yes, against torpedoes sure Kashtan is useless :-D CBG existed long before Kirov was was just idea in leading engineer head :-) Threat to modern US navy is even container ship, so I would say, that Russian navy, althought just shadow of former Soviet power, is definitely threat to american sea dominance.

The Russians are not bent on force projection like US though. They are actually very defensive minded so they don't need as many of anything as we do. The purpose of the Kirov is to go out and give a very warm Russian welcome to an invading Armada or Carrier group.

I can't count the number of times I've watched this video. Such an awesome ship!
Other guns, except most gatling systems, don't need an external power source.
for a ship with so much firepower it is a sleek ship
Perfect combination - strength & beauty.

TARKR "Peter the Great" is one of the most modern and powerful ships of the Russian Navy and one of the most powerful attack ships in the world.
The ship has the ability to defeat large surface targets and protect sea connections from air attacks and enemy submarines. It has an unlimited range of navigation, it is equipped with shock cruise missiles capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 2600 kilometers.
TARKR " Peter the Great "is equipped with anti-ship missile system" Granite "(developed by" NPO mashinostroeniya"), equipped with 20 launchers CM-233 with advanced high-precision anti-ship cruise missiles P-700" Granite " installed under the upper deck, with an elevation angle of 60 degrees. Rocket length - 10 m, caliber-0,85 m, starting weight-7 t.
Military head - piece in nuclear (500 kt), normal (750 kg of explosive) warheads or fuel-air warheads (explosives). Range-700 km, flight speed-1,6-2,5 M. Missiles have a multi-variant program of attack targets, increased noise immunity and are designed to strike at group targets. When volley firing one of them should be at high altitude to increase the detection range of the enemy, exchanging information with others that are literally spread over the surface of the water. In case of destruction of the rocket-the leader its place is automatically taken by one of guided missiles.
Over-the-horizon target designation and guidance can be carried out by Tu-95RTS, Ka-25TS helicopter or space reconnaissance and target designation system.
The ship is equipped with anti-aircraft complex "Reef" S-300F, there are 12 PU and 96 vertical launch missiles.
There is also an Autonomous ship anti-aircraft system "Dagger". Each drum-type sub-deck PU has 8 single-stage solid-fuel remote-controlled missiles 9M330-2, the total stock-128 missiles.
The cruiser is armed with anti-aircraft missile and artillery complex "Kortik", providing self-defense against a number of" accurate " weapons, including anti-ship and anti-radar missiles, bombs, aircraft and helicopters, light-tonnage ships. Each unit has two 30-mm six-barrel AK-630M1-2 artillery units with two AO-18 assault rifles according to the "Gatling" scheme with a total rate of fire of 10,000 V / min and two blocks of 4 two-stage 9m311 missiles (SA-N-11) with a fragmentation rod warhead and a non-contact fuse. In the turret compartment is 16 missiles. Missiles unified with 2С6 missile complex "Tunguska". The control system of the Kortik air defense system consists of radar and television systems connected with each other using elements of artificial intelligence. Two installations of the Kortik air defense system are located in the bow of the ship on both sides of the Granit PU, and four others are located in the aft part of the main superstructure.
"Peter the Great" in may 2010
In addition, the cruiser "Peter the Great" is equipped with 130-mm multi-purpose twin art installations "AK - 130" (length of trunks - 70 calibers, 840 shells) with a range of up to 25 km.rate of Fire-from 20 to 80 rounds per minute. The mass of the high-explosive shell-27 kg, has a shock, remote and radio detonators. Ready to fire ammunition-180 shells. The shooting control system Mr-184 allows simultaneous tracking and firing at two targets.
The cruiser was also armed with two anti-submarine (5 PU Board) rocket-torpedo 533 mm complexes RPK-6M "Waterfall", missile-torpedoes which are capable of hitting submarines of the enemy at ranges up to 60 km as a combat head is used a small torpedo, UMGT-1. The rocket dives into the water, takes off into the air and delivers a torpedo to the target area, and there is already a word for UMGT-1, which again dives into the water.
To combat enemy torpedoes the cruiser "Peter the Great" has a torpedo complex RCPTS-1 "Udav-1M" (10 pipes, rails, conveyor automatic recharge, reaction time - 15 sec. the maximum range is 3000 m, the minimum is 100 m, the weight of the rocket - 233 kg). The rocket launchers on the "Peter the Great "are placed as follows: one ten-pipe RBU - 12000 (firing range - 3000 m, projectile weight-80 kg) is installed in the bow of the ship on a turntable, two six-pipe RBU - 1000" Smerch - 3 " (range - 1000 m, projectile weight-55 kg) - in the aft on the upper deck on both sides. Working on counter-measures include two paired 150-mm PU PC-14 (complex shoots interference), protivoallergennye traps, decoys and towed about a torpedo goal with a powerful mechanism noise generator.
On Board the cruiser based two anti-submarine ka-27.
Radar facilities RAP / EW TARKR "Peter the Great" include 16 stations of three types. Ship surveillance, tracking and targeting consists of two stations of space communication (SATS), four stations space navigation (SATAU) and four special electronic stations. The air-surface situation is monitored by all-weather three-coordinate radar "Frigate-MAE" detecting targets at ranges of more than 300 km and altitudes up to 30 km.
The cruiser also has three navigation stations, four radio-electronic control systems for firing airborne weapons, helicopter flight controls and a "friend / foe"identification system.
The ship's sonar system includes a sonar with a hull antenna for search and detection of submarines at low and medium frequencies and a towed automated sonar system with a variable depth antenna (150-200 m) - at medium frequencies.
When upgrading in 2019-2022 years in the armament of the cruiser will be added hypersonic anti-ship missiles "Zircon", universal supersonic anti-ship missiles and medium-range missiles P-800 "Onyx" cruise missiles "Caliber". The missiles will be launched from 3s14 universal launchers.
Yeah Ivan, add some more stuff on your ships..the Kirov promotes the idea that "stuff" on the outside of a ship or airplane makes it
very UN-stealthy--this thing must look like a 10 story building on radars of Aegis ships...
Very impressive. Greetings from North Carolina, U.S.A.

How about that Typhoon moored behind the Kirov
I think 3 where scrapped a few years back (typhoon) ,
Must be the only one left that is operable. Yeah, there was a National Geo documentary of them getting scrapped.
I'm kicking myself for not going to see her when she sailed through Danish waters.
@@danishpuma apparently there was rather large inspection section at the Bridge to make sure Russians didn't break the laws of seas while passing the bridge. @@ericolsen5592 And do You realize that the Kirov is meant to be taking on Carrier Groups?

Vadim Yanchuk carrier groups Are supported with subs most of the time .. subs vs big ship = dead big ship
its a perfect ship but it was built in the wrong era. the reason why USN just focuses on Carrier groups os because of Air superiority. they can launch planes in great distances without being detected and its escorts (destroyers, cruisers and BB) can defend the carrier from the missile.
Kirov fighting 2 or more carrier is like a man being attack by bees. it will be yamato &musashi 2.0
Kirov can act as part of the carrier group. she can protect the carrier perfectly and offer a great deal of hardship against incoming subs. but kirov fighting a carrier group and hoping winning it is mere a dream.let's not forget the lesson of Tirpitz, Yamato and Musashi, the victims of air superiority of the carriers
ps: carrier group can compose of a core of 3 or more carriers, several cruisers and battleship and destroyers from the outside as vanguards.
Murica Chan I agree but the story of the Yamato was in a large part due to the wrong type of weaponry. She could not kill the bees as you sugest. I suspect that is not the case here at all.
The Russians have a nuclear arsenal to keep the americans at arms length, they would be foolish to attempt to compete directly with the blue water strength of the USN.
thisisn'tmyrealname exactly! They know their position and who not to mess with. So playing defensive is safer as it did not directly pose a threat.

"sufficient access to the seas" ... right
@@heathermarcoux294 What's the issue?

@@faalsan1918
Size and weapons do not a battlecruiser make.

Lolz
No, they are not different.
These ships would eventually become known as frigates, and the modern frigate retains many of the same roles as their WWII predecessors, as the U.S
Navy's Oliver Hazard Perry-class demonstrated.
