Tavares has 2 playoff series wins in 15 seasons. He has 23 goals and 23 assists in 62 playoff games, which translates into a 60 point season over an 82 game season. For a first overall pick and $11 million per year, he certainly has not been a difference maker in the playoffs. I'm sure he won't waive his no trade clause anyway, but I don't know how much interest teams would have in him given his salary and age. Marner is the Leaf's best shot at getting back a decent return.

@@rickbold9337 Really? 37 players have averaged over a point or more in this year's playoffs while 45 did it during the regular season. Considering that less than half of the teams participate in the playoffs, it's actually easier to score in the playoffs.
It'd be a terrible result if you had to lose Kampf and Jarnkrok because Marner wasn't movable. They weren't the problem in the playoffs.
Tavares may not be what he was, but he still seems to be in on big goals. He sent us to the 2nd round he drove the net on Knies game winner. I don't mind keeping him for another year then the haircut as you said. Tbh

By Sept the Marner haters will have calmed down. He's a gifted player. The cap hit that is crushing the Leafs is Tavares's.
I don't want to see any of the start players go, but the problem is management awarding guys massive contracts without accomplishing anything. It's going to be really hard to change that now, even if you move one of them because the rest of them are still there with their $10-13M contracts. I don't think just one person is the problem.
My best guess at a solution is to trade Marner for a solid goalie and/or defence (I like the Sarros rumours), re-sign JT at $5-6M if he really wants to stay, try to re-sign Domi, Edmunson and Bertuzzi, sign Pesce and/or Montour in the offseason, hope that Cowan and Minten are ready to join the Leafs and make sure any other player you sign has to be tough and play relentless.
The next coach (hopefully Berube) has to come in day one and set the tone that ice time depends on your effort and they need to play the right way for 82 games and not just coast through the regular season then try to turn it on in the playoffs.
They NEED to get a number #1 goalie and a #1 defenseman
Woll is the #1 goalie, he would beat out any guy they pay big money to, so there is no point. Jones, Murray or even Sammy could be the back up.

The trades need to be made before the season starts, if Marner refuses he will have a hard time with the fans. Its in his best interest to give out his list.

Marner doesn’t appear to me to be the kind of player who can easily shake off pressure from the fans. If fans don’t like him being around, I think it will affect his game.
I would be far more upset if Marner is traded than not. I would rather see the Leafs pursue a trade for Matthews. His contract would be far more appealing to another team and after this past season's numbers, he would bring back a good amount of talent.

One thing people forget is that we could drop heavily and end up like Ottawa. We need do a pay cut and add some players that way. We would still have to replace JT at center. He will take 5mil for sure. Marner needs a talk to change his game slightly. Just shoot more. We need to add more d.
Moving JT and Mitch likely wouldn’t help the Leafs in the regular season - but likely would win the Leafs another first round series next year. They both are difference makers in the playoffs - but for the wrong/negative reasons. 😀

While it is possible they don’t waive their NMC, I don’t see a scenario where they wouldn’t if asked. I think Treliving and Shanny would make it clear they won’t be resigned and that they aren’t part of the leafs plans going forward. Why would they wanna stay in a toxic environment instead of getting a fresh start. However is gets done I get a feeling the parting of ways between player and team won’t be a pretty one.
I think Mitch is the one getting moved. Cause moving JT would involve taking back a contract that is likely going to be bad or eating half or close to half of his salary which would just be a lateral move. Plus Mitch will get you the pieces you need.

Matthews would be easier to move and because he has term on his contract the Leafs would get a lot back.

Leafs should trade Marner and keep Tavares. There is only one more year on Tavares's contract and if he wants to stay he will have to take a significant pay cut which I would be okay with. If Marner stays he is going to want even more which I am not cool with anymore. $12m for a player not built for the playoffs is a no-go for this team.
People in Leaf Land are clueless. You'll have a hard time finding anyone to take tavares and get much in return. Marner, you'll get more but still then what. GM overpaid nylander when he was pumping the points on. Now he's just banking in the money.

A healthy scratch will really help Toronto win and attract players. Is Toronto really willing to fall on its own knife. It Toronto doesn’t honour NMC, it’s over for them.

This is the Dubas/Shanny legacy. And it hurts the franchise for multiple seasons. When they decided to allocate such a high percentage of cap space to the core 4, did they consider whether that core 4 were playoff winning players or only think about regular season success - I think the latter.

Leafs need to make changes because other teams are right behind them, Devils. Sens, Penguins, Habs. If they stay the same they might not make the playoffs next year.

If you can't trade them then take the wash of the season and deal with it the falling season. That means keep the same team. So the players will have no points and trying to go to another team will low ball them. Problem solved!
Marner & Tavares have gotten over on the management it isnt there fault that they have the NMC but with this being said it wouldn't surprise me if they play for Toronto & walk next off-season.

JT has lost a step or a few, i think he stays here, retires to a front office job, much like Spezza did....Marner may do leafs a solid, give them a short list, maybe Florida suits him, sun ocean and no tax....its a possibility, but i know about as much, sometimes less, than what other fans may know.

@@steveoishere Cup's are out of reach for Canadian teams under Bettman's rules. Going on 32 years. I gave up on a Cup for any Canadian team years ago. So whether one player is on the team or not is irrelevant. I am just glad I have seen them win 4 Cups. I barely watch playoff hockey now. It is so stacked in favour of US teams, the entertainment value is gone after the regular season is over.

Concerning Jarnkrok across his career of 699 regular season and 93 playoff games, if you look at average goals per game, he has the lowest amongst the top 2 lines (regular season and playoffs). He has the lowest average assists per game (regular and playoff). He is 32 years old. We should put that into perspective before looking at JT (who is 33 and has significantly better numbers)- rather than just looking at cap space gains.

Thank you for finally saying that. I've been arguing with my friends forever since the horrific loss to Boston a few weeks back that you cannot trade these guys if they don't want to be traded. Then they turn around and say well they say they love to run on they want the best so leave and I would ask didn't Mats Sundin say the same damn thing? He could have waved his no trade clause and get Toronto something but no he played out and walked. I hope these two guys do the same thing. The NHL is a business and these guys are businessmen and as much as I want Toronto to win the Stanley Cup, at the end of the day it's up to the individual. Here's something after this embarrassment, there's a possibility that Mitch may come back a different person because the only thing that's wrong with him is that he soft. I wish people will be willing to say that's his problem. He is soft. I don't know how you change that because it's a mindset. He has to agree that I got to get nasty or a little bit grittier out there to be a better player. Now a hard-ass coach can probably bring that out of him. Maybe that's where Babcock was going.
I agree with regards to Mitch needing to get tougher and that maybe a new coach will bring that out of him. I disagree that hockey players are businessmen though (for the most part). I think their agents are the businessmen, players are just passionate about playing and yes they want the most money they can get, but for them, it’s a fine balance between where and how they want to play, and what their agents advise them. For some, the Stanley Cup is the only reason, for others it’s staying in the game for as long as possible, whether they raise the cup or not

@@lMike2Dopel Reilly has a muffin of a shot and can't think the game quick enough to qb a pp, he skating makes up for some warts. they can sign a defensive d like pecse in free agency and get a cheaper offensive option to qb the pp better than Reilly does. if you have a viable point shot threat, it opens up more room for matthews and nylander on the wings. another option if available is john carlson from the caps . massive upgrade on Reilly not sure the cost to acquire

All this trade talk is just nonsense.Trading Matthews would be more lucrative because he already has an extension, which is what teams are looking for.
