- More rough stuff in NHL pre-season action, while the Toronto Maple Leafs have looked into an extension for one of its top young players. Mike DiStefano and David Morassutti give their thoughts on the rough stuff between the Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators, following Arber Xhekaj's hit on Tim Stutzle and the debate around how the pre-season is seeing a lot of rough play and injuries to key players. Mike and Dave move on to the report from Elliotte Friedman that the Leafs have explored a contract extension with Matthew Knies and how the front office views it as an important building block for the future but what is the right contract for both sides? Mike and Dave then move on to the news from the NHL Board of Governors looking into potentially shortening the pre-season and the salary cap projection.

Knies is a playoff performer.
We need to stop overpaying our players. You guys talk about them too much, making them feel bigger than they are. Knies is where he is because of Auston Matthews, and deserves no more than what Domi's getting. Roberston's only getting 875k, and you think Knies is worth 6mil?
Take away stutzles stick and you'll find Wi-Fi's shoulder would have directly smacked his chin. Not only would it have struck his chin, but wifi came in and directly tried to injure by throwing the shoulder and chicken winging the elbow at the last second.
It's one thing to come in and get low and smack in the chest area and the other player was just skating with his head low. It's another thing entirely to skate up to him with his knees stiff and throwing out the elbow and shoulder at the last second.
Lock him up now cause he's 22 and won't be breaking the bank. Ps Habs fans are so hypocritical.
6 years 4-5 million a year
The one thing I'll say about the knies situation is what does knies think about all of this? Your entire discussion was about how the leafs should sign him early so his cap hit is down, but what if knies doesn't want to do that?
I just have a feeling he will wait until mid season or end of season
You must not have heard the whole discussion, we definitely brought this up
@@LockedOnLeafs I mean yeah towards the end as an afterthought. It's just that it felt a bit forced as an add-on at the end.
Even if knies wasn't on the team, I'm sure he's watched hockey growing up and has heard the contract discussions with the leafs. It's hard not to hear about info on the leafs when it comes to the NHL. If I was knies and had his size and talent I would wait until mid to off-season to boost his value, especially seeing as one of his elc years was burned at the end so he's really only got two years to prove he deserves good money.
If we are talking percent chance, or likelyhood he would sign before the season starts I would say it's a lot more likely he waits. Like 80/20 that he waits.
If anything gets done before the season starts it would be a short term two year bridge deal for 3.5 or 4 million per year, and after that it would jump more. If it's longer term I can definitely see around 6 mil per year, which eats the entire cap increase.
This is the problem, everyone comes up with stupid numbers for contracts. Toronto can’t do anything with what they have now in contracts and players and it keeps getting bigger. That why we lose good or great players is the contracts .
JT signs for 3 to 4 Million AAV and Knies for 5 to 6 Mill AAV
6m? More like $3.5m.
Knies is a 3rd liner he's playing with Matthews and Marner and only scored 15 he's worth 3 .5 mill
Wow what a poke dam
