When you try to franchise it doesn't always end up good for prices I guess.
In italy coffee (espresso, obv) was like 60 cents 30 years ago. Then was raised up to 70, 80, then 1 euro was the average price in 2021. And it was already a lot for us. Now, in 2024 it approaches 1,20 euros... That's like a lot. It still varies throughout the peninsula, and somewhere (like in the south where I live) it's still around 1 euros, but EVERYONE will tell you it's too much. Yeah, inflation and whatnot are a thing, but they don't justify such a price raise for the end consumer if the only two ingredients are hot water and coffee beans

There are many people with accents in the US, and some can speak English better than some native speakers. Its not always the servers first assumption that the person theyre speaking to cant understand them. Communicating your needs will 9/10 times lead to a more patient and understanding server.

Just ask for black or americano with three shots of espresso no cream no sugar unless you want sugar.
Also, I'm not sure if black is just americano or if there's a distinction. However, neither black nor americano are espresso and if you're Italian you probably want stronger coffee. Americano is watered down espresso so asking for three small shots of espresso in your americano should give you something close to an espresso.

True for anyone speaking in their second language in the country of that language. I went to a grocery store to buy some items. I was expecting a greeting, or to ask if I wanted a bag or not, and the price. Instead she asked me if I had a store card, but that card had a special name and I had zero idea what she was talking about. In addition to local slang and colloquialisms, you also have people that talk softly, don´t pronounce all of the syllables, and suddenly you wonder if you´re in a completely different country. So much for being close to fluent. Foiled again.

I've done the same. The last time I worked retail I had a few different instances of people with a variety of disabilities shopping/needing assistance, and I tried to make a point to match my speech to theirs. If they were using simple, straightforward language, I did as well. If they spoke slowly, I waited while they spoke and responded in a slower way (not excessively so because I didn't want them to feel mocked, but slow enough that I was sure they wouldn't likely be struggling to follow what I was saying). I had on woman who struggled for several minutes to count her change before admitting she was from another country and didn't remember what US coins were worth what! I offered to help and showed her each kind of coin, it's name, and value, and together we counted out her change.
It costs so little to be kind to others, especially when it's clear they could use some extra support.

It makes sense to teach beginners through an approach with a focus that gets down to basics, strips away some nuance and makes things digestible. Understanding some foundational words, phrases, grammar etc can really be the bedrock as we move on to advanced things, particularly learning how everyday people really talk.
It's always key to know whether you just want to learn some things to communicate a little while traveling, whether you're studying as a hobby, or if you're committed in the long run and what context you might be using it (Ie the difference between working at a law firm versus a nightclub).
As this skit shows pretty realistically, these situations may be embarrassing, and certainly not the way to minimize stress and culture shock if you're looking at taking on a high pressure job on a work visa for example, but really it's fine if you're only in the county for a week or so, as you will certainly see improvement from such immersion.
If and when we learn slang and casual pronunciation should be directly tailored to our goals, interests and how we learn personally.

Поэтому, даже когда санкции уберут, я никогда не пойду в этот ваш Старбакс. Хитрый маркетинг меня раздражает, особенно то что вы указали.

Interesting fact! I'm a former sbux barista and this is a common myth! At least in my experience, it often just LOUD and BUSY and im dyslexic. I promise your average barista doesnt care enough to push some stupidly specific marketing scheme, let alone one intended to intentionally anger customers. No manager or shift leader has EVER told me to do that, and I worked w them for 4+ years. Just my experience tho

I think every place that sells coffee should have something on the menu as a standardized "coffee." I do enjoy customized drinks, but I feel like a large number of people I know don't want anything to do with that, and just want simplicity

As an Italian I'm so confused by the "Grande / Venti" sizes.
"Grande" in Italian literally means "BIG", "Venti" can both mean "Twenty" or "Winds", depending on the accent on the E.
I would be so confused in a situation like this, which one is like regular/normal size? lol

Tall = pequeño, Grande = Mediano y Venti = Grande.
