Funny coincidence. I just came back test driving a Nikon Z7 with that exact same 28mm and I had a blast with it on the street haha. Same sensor as z8, same evf, slightly slower AF but single point back button focusing with tracking if I need to works great, very light and small body, 1000 bucks. The thing with nikon is that they always give you a ton of customization options. And it's overwhelming. For street all you really need is a single focus point in the middle (no Eye AF) that can be held down for 3D tracking if you need to (22:14 would have helped you in that situation haha). Then you get one sticky little box that follows whatever you stuck it to and you take a photo or leave it and press it once to focus normally. Become the master of your focus point and not the other way around :D No clutter BS with multiple boxes that look like a killer robot night vision about to shoot you.
Thats what I did from the start of the video 😂 Still gave me all the problems.
Alex, it’s a good idea to rank how fast street cameras wake up\ turn on to capture a photo. Taking into account of exposure setting and focus. like GR, contax, TC-1, nikon 28t, et al
I have a z5 and can’t imagine ranking the z8 a D lol. I have used many cameras and love most of them, but there’s something so convenient about Nikon that I absolutely love. I’ve used Sonys more recently and the camera just seems too smart in some weird indescribable way lol
I'm a hobbyist, sometimes shooting birds, family, events action. Somedays street. I have a Z8 and the key to it is not using any other camera. I also have a A6500 and it is confucing going between the two. But once you get used to the Z8, it's like being a fighter pilot in your cockpit and the camera becomes part of you. I shoot full manual, auto ISO, and AF-C with a small focus box so the focus goes where I want. And the camera rarely misses a shot. I get your perspective though, and if I only shot street, I absolutely wouldn't want something this big and loaded. That's not what this camera is for. Also, the Nikon Z lenses are absolutely superb. And the cropping ability has resued my bad framing many times
Great video, really like the humour. I also love Alik's website and presets so was great to see him pop up on your channel. Subscribed! Agree that the Z8 is great for everything except street photography. Just too big, bulky, and overkill features in your face, all the time. For weddings and family shooting, wouldn't swap it, because it makes the job so much easier (which is what I want). Really great series and look forward to watching more of your videos.
Love that old man yelling at modern camera vibe. 😄 sold my X-H2 for a smaller sony A7RV with all that AI shenanigans i really have to try hard to miss a shot.
THERE IS NEVER EVER ENOUGH BUTTONS on a camera. we need MOOOORE! Just strap a lens and sensor on keyboard! I need my camera spaceship! I am doing street photography with a Z9 man! I workout 3 days before the shoot to be able to handle the heavy beast
I own a Nikon Z8 and LOVE it for everything BUT streetphotography.
Keep the uploads coming. Digging this series Alex!
Happy to see you back
Love these new series!
this series is sick, I wholeheartedly agree with your opinions on the z8. I have no complaints about using a big camera, I've shot with a D750, 50D, D300, and I'm currently using a 5D classic. If i'm going to be using a bigger camera though, it's got to get out of the way for how I want to shoot. Hell, I've even stopped using smaller cameras than those for being inconvenient. Great vid and series!
I am enjoying the videos and like how forward you are when working with different pieces of equipment
Love this video!
Alex I don't blame you. That camera is soooo frustrating when doing street photography.
Never had a z8, nor tried, but it seems complicated. I was surprised you ranked it as high as you did with all the problems you had with it.
Cheers for another vid, love the series.
Let's see some more Can it Street: point & shoots! Loved the Ricoh GR1s video!
Woo, call out to the X-T2, my street photography carry, with XF 23mm lens and battery grip, bit of a lump, but does all I need. Plus useful if any hand-to-hand situations arise, thank alex(es) great video keep it up!
Hi Alex, I wondered what your favourite focal lengths are for your style of shooting? In particular I'm personally tyring to decide whether to get the 23mm F2 or 27mm F2.8 for Fuji APS-C for street and wondered what you might recommend?
yeaaa more videos ❤
30:30 I own both a Nikon D800 (also crazy amount of buttons) and a Fuji (and also a canon, but don't use it much anymore). Honestly, getting back to the Nikon is more natural for me, exactly because of the large amount of buttons.
With the fuji to change some settings, due to the lack of buttons, you have to remember certain button combinations or menus to go into (or worse, swipes on the screen).
It always takes me a while to get used to the fuji again after a while not using it, but with the nikon its surprisingly easy. Perhaps its just fits with my brain.
Funny AF! Especially the AI stuff. Can you do a sony rx1r next? Anyway, great to see you're back again.
regarding the weight, well, my m10r with 28 cron weight 100 less then z8 with 28mm 2.8, but I wouldn’t consider it light. I think z8 although being heavier is more comfortable to hold considering there is a grip
I feel like with most digital cameras I've owned, the autofocus always grabs something that I don't want it to focus on, just like in the car shot. Always takes me a little time to figure out what the camera wants to do and using that to get it to do what I want it to do. Love my Z8 but definitely get why you rated it where you did.
Sir, all you need to do is set your aperture to f11, set your ISO to Auto, walk around and find a composition to shoot. You don't need to concern yourself with how to focus, the depth of field at f11 is deep enough to just set the focus area to global autofocus.
However, I love street photography, so I know what you're talking about. It's like that photo your friend zoomed in on, he wanted to show you the magic of 45 megapixels, but you told him that if he zoomed in, it would ruin the composition and the original vibe. It's true that street photography doesn't need such a "powerful" camera, but if you only need one camera, the z8 can really do it all, including street photography.
And I love the way you guys make jokes and do street photography at the same time, I love this video.😄
Thanks for the compliments! All you have to ask yourself is how I've managed to zone focus range finders at F5.6-11 for years and then pick up a Z8 and wonder if I cared to figure out how to change the aperture on this monstrosity lol. I actually had no idea what my settings were at any time! Truely.. one of the cameras.. of all time.
It might be redundant compared to the GRIII but I'd love to see you take the Z30 for a whirl with the 24f1.7 lens if you can get your hands on it. I have a hunch it's a great street camera.
✌️
I love this series already, fingers crossed Alex has a sony setup somewhere in the lineup, I'd like to see an actual street photographer use a sony system tired of the orange and teal boiz
How's the battery?(I was told to comment)
cool to see you posting again. this comment is for engagement
Nice!!!
Nice video
It would make more sense to keep all the cameras you’ve tried on that chart so we can compare or have a rough idea.
Can you do same for Q2 or Q3 ?
Q1&Q2 is coming ;) Maybe Q3 in the future but I dont have any friends with it yet.
I like the review conceptually and the channel.
Can it street? It can.
Can you handle its complexity in the fact that it is so capable to fashion it to your method is the question.
If you know the camera or the Nikon system you can use it with great success on the street.
The sleep can be turned off(bring batteries).
Is it a Fuji or Leica? Ahhh no.
Should you hate on a camera for being too much, for humor.. maybe. 😅
So ultimately it takes a slightly more intelligent definitely more detailed yet patient human to operate a Z8.
The payoff is you could actually do really well with it.
Lastly do I care about what others think about the size or shape of what I am rocking that day. Don’t care.
Great Video!!!❤
I think a Nikon Z f would be better for street.
basically the same as z8 but with different sensor, and worse ergonomics. looks cool but feels like a brick in hands
You forgot to test how it wields as a brick, you know, to fend off a robber.
lol, The menus on the Z8 are so brutal.
I just got a Z6 I’m December 😂
At the end of the day it’s still a Nikon, it’s gunna die on you sooner than later ;)
I enjoy cranky old man complaining about new tech because that’s me too
Just two dads justifying their new $4k toy purchase.
Nikon menus might be the worst…. And I shoot Nikon currently.
I do think this shows the downside of all the modern high tech cameras. They get in the way before they get out of the way.
Definitely has the worst menus right now. Too many features brought into the Z8/Z9 without improving the menu list, so they need to tab out each menu page like how Sony and Canon are doing. Right now it's a bunch of random stuff not even in alphabetical order, and pages and pages of it.
D like didn’t like it! Deserved.
14:46 Dude, tell your friend it's not 50MP. It's 45.7MP. Repeatedly inflating that number by adding ~10% won't work regardless how often you repeat that.
