Just encountered this issue on my wife’s 06 trailblazer with the codes U1064 and U1016 along with B codes and and C codes. I’m hoping the computer isn’t taking a crap but watching this video gave me hope that it’s having communication issues. This video is pure gold! You explained everything clearly and with no confusion! You are an amazing tech! I am a mechanic but not on the scale you are! I’m just amazed at the skills you have! Thank you so much for giving back to everyone who may need guidance on these issues! Definitely earned a subscriber in me! Keep up the amazing content man! 🤙🏽

    I subscribed just to comment.
I’m having issues with communicatons on my 2006 Equinox. ABS/TSC lights. Also lose Electric Power Steering sometimes.
I have a tool, like your Tech 2 tool, that reads like your video.
Have similar error codes like this video.
Watching you go through your video, and going step by step, makes an old car guy like me happy. Been working on cars all my life, and yours made looking for this issue… fun and endearing.
Now I just need diagrams and pin outs like yours. Thanks for making this video!

I subscribed to your channel a bit late in life. I just want to say your videos, including this one, shows Excellent troubleshooting tutorial/ diagnosis and repairs. You did this demo Without a breakout box ect.. shows how important having the proper wiring schematics and knowledge of how these systems interact. Keep up the good work!
Side note * this is an example of how important it is for semi introverted people to become instructors. No nonsense straight and to the task at hand. (Slow clap to standing ovation)

I would have used a jump wire from module to class 2 connector while connector was disconnected to see if module problem, or other I\O , with other power connector connected. Powered.
If power and I\O are on one connector , then i use jumpers.
      Bad-shorted I\O can pull a module down.

This is an awesome example of troubleshooting!! Logical progression by process of elimination. I have the exact same issue right now with an '05 Suburban LT. I've not started the troubleshooting process, but this video gives me a huge head start. I don't have a scan tool or an oscilloscope but I have everything else. Hurricane Helene has dumped a ton of water on this car and it leaked. I suspect I have a short someone in the floor board or dash related to water.
Leading up to this exact same failure I was getting some random OnStar messages with no input from me. So I will start at the VCIM. Thanks to UA-cam for the platform and for guys like you who would take the time to recreate a scenario for the benefit of others faced with the same problem.
For a 20 year old truck and 200K there is hope to keep it on the road and hopefully an inexpensive solution. I can say this for sure, in 20 more years the cars that have been produced with dependencies on networks and solid state circuitry will never being showing up at Classic Car shows. They will all eventually be unrepairable do to obsolete and unavailable parts.

Nice job. I spent 20 years in the GM/Delphi/Mahle Advanced Systems R&D Group and I run into dozens of guys that simply won't take the time to learn just a bit of electronics and LAN communications to help them figure this out. They show up in my driveway all the time because they won't buy a cheap scope and soldering iron. 99% of the time, as long as the Micro-Controller didn't get damaged, All of these modules can be fixed for a couple dollars and an hour of time. Best Wishes.

This was a great video for me Will. I'm researching a intermittent crank/no start on a 2006 Dodge Ram truck. One of the many codes say it has a "no comm" but this truck doesn't have a CAN Bus system (pins 6 and 14) that my Hantek scope can read so I have to find a new approach. This helps. I'm hoping to get up there and hang out with Keith for a few days hoping some of his brain cells will rub off on me. Nice job on the video too. It was easy to follow along.

Just went through this last week with a 98 Seville SLS. I just went through unplugging every module on the Class network until communication was restored. Found the VCIM as the culprit on that one as well. All modules aren't easy to get to so if it was a module that was in a difficult spot, this method would work best but I just got lucky I didn't have to go that far.

Nice find! Can I make a few suggestions? I use a DMM to pin 2 at the DLC. I use a BOB, but you said you didn't have that. What is that reading? Remove the splice pack and check the individual circuits. That would have taken you to JX306 and do the same. I'm not looking for any specific voltage, but I want to see activity. When you got to CK 1098 you would have seen the VCIM pulling Class 2 to ground. Make sense?
Another tip you may, or may not find useful - on the Tech 2 the "left & right" arrow buttons take you up or down a full 'page'. It saves a little time instead of using the up & down buttons.
    Nicely done video!

    Absolutely great video!
I'm an industrial machine electrician which is usually working with AC and much higher voltages but I can really appreciate vehicle wiring and it's different complexities. However videos like yours makes it become just another way of looking at electrical circuits and standard troubleshooting. I do not have a oscilloscope but think it would be invaluable with comms issues like this. What are your thoughts having a cheap picoscope to a pc. I ended up using my multimeter instead, to diagnose a similar issue in my tahoe. As soon as I unplugged a suspect ABS module my network came back to life, but it ended up being downstream at the ESCM and the vehicle ran fine when unplugged. It was a great feeling. But when I changed the module, the issue returned a week later, which now points to the old shock connectors and or the air ride pump system this module feeds. Going to disconnect the fuse power to the pump as it is not in use anyway. I was getting above 8v on can hi and lo on the module, then it went to 2.5v on both when i unplugged it. Thanks again for a great video, you should teach as much as possible, it's a gift when you can explain things well to the average Joe, your very good at what you are doing. 👍

Hi Will. Thanks for sharing this epic info with us. May I ask a stupid question please? Does the vehicle not need the vcim plugged in/online for the rest of the modules to communicate? Apologies if that's a stupid question.Thx and happy new year :-)

The VCIM dose not need to be plugged in for the other modules to communicate.

Hi. What a great video, you definitely did work on the car like a true detective. Impressive. Maybe you have the knowledge sort my question out below. :)
Have a 2002 Tahoe sold new in Europe, do you know what pin 14 are used for in my OBDII port? Do I have GM-LAN in my truck and what protocol does it go under?

I Will great video and happy new year! So if I didn’t have the Tech2 doing this test And the ability to print each one separately, I only have the ALLTEL, besides going through and Unplugging each module separately, while I have my scope hooked up, the easiest way to check to see which module is bringing it down would be to jumper each one and watching the network how it reacts correct? Thanks and keep up the good work, Doug

BigFoote Mobile Auto yup absolutely 👍 and the Alltel would have worked just fine for this entire job. Keep it plugged in the DLC just like I did with the tech2 and you will see the modules come on. May need to keep doing a system scan🤔 good question. Should work...
We went for the tech2 just in case the ALLTEL was being goofy lol
Plus being a OEM tool it’s much faster and easier..

Great video. Can you use the autel auto scan as a "ping" to see if modules pop up? My shop doesn't have a tech 2.

    • @robinsonsauto
      @robinsonsauto  5 років тому

Michael Herbert thank you! Yes I do believe we could have used the autel throughout the entire job... we went for the tech2 because we had it and wanted to verify a second scan tool had no com.
The tech2 will be much easier since it’s made for the job of course However I’m thinking with the autel you might need to keep repeating system scan and see what becomes active.. I’m not 100% but sure there is a way

I know this is an old video, and I'm not even sure if the information I have is correct, but isn't the datalink supposed to have pin 6 populated? The service manual at Operation CHARM states that the rendezvous communicates via high speed GMLAN and the class 2 network, and it mentions:
Home >> Buick Truck >> 2005 >> Rendezvous FWD V6-3.4L VIN E >> Repair and Diagnosis >> Powertrain Management >> Computers and Control Systems >> Relays and Modules - Computers and Control Systems >> Body Control Module >> Description and Operation >> Data Link Communications
The data link connector (DLC) is a standardized 16 cavity connector. Connector design and location is dictated by an industry wide standard, and is required to provide the following:
    - Scan tool power battery positive voltage at terminal 16
    - Scan tool power ground at terminal 4
    - Common signal ground at terminal 5
    - Class 2 signal at terminal 2
    - GMLAN High Speed + circuit at terminal 6
    - GMLAN High Speed - circuit at terminal 14
I got excited for a moment and double checked, and unfortunately female pin 6 was not populated, and there were only 4 female pins and 4 wires (battery, ground, ground, and class 2 signal)

My favorite is when I get called to a shop to help them diagnose a problem and I don't even use my own diagnostic equipment. I use their equipment to help fix the problem.

I noticed in alot of advanced tech videos. Almost everyone is using a harbor freight test light. It's my favorite light.

Advanced and harbor freight don't belong in the same sentence. It must have been your first and only test light.

Silly question, what do you use to "jump", looks like a piece of coat hanger. Is there any concern of material type, solid copper wire, aluminum something or other... diaper pin?????

    Hi. Great explanation, thanks!
I have slightly different problem. 2007 Chevy TrailBlazer
Without any DTCs message "Stabilitrak not ready" and then "Stabilitrak OFF" appears on IPC display. I understand, it means, that EBCM can't initialize all sensors and other, to make sure, that ESP don't kill you🙃. But main problem is, that there no any DTCs in EBCM, at all. But there is U1166 (both driver and passenger doors) and U1019 on SRS. All succesfully cleared, but Stablilitrak issue don't go away. Maybe you seen that before, or can tell me, which way to go with diag. Thanks!

WOW! Very informative video! I sure learned a lot! I have 2011 Colorado throwing intermittent module error codes like this. Wished I had access to the data and schematics to run it down to which module is dragging down the others? Body panel module and fuel pump modules keep throwing codes on warm days only. I've replaced the fuel pump module but it did not help. Maybe my rear door wiring harness has pinched the wires off again or shorted them together making the body module drag down the network? Thanks for the video! I wished that you were near me? I'd gladly pay you to run down my problem and even pay a bit extra to watch you do it and learn!

Great video. I know this is an old video. I hope you see my comments and respond. What is the program or source of the technical documentation? What is the best all around scanner? If Tech2, how do you make sure you can diagnose and/or program modules or features? What is the language standard for 2000 - 2006 GMC Yukon and Sierra? Thanks in advance!
