@Nathaniel Bandy Have you ever played Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon and Goemon's Great Adventure? Their some of the best N64 games right up there with Super Mario 64 and the Zelda games in my opinion. If you haven't played them I highly recommend you do.
It is actually pretty cool, as its symmetrical if held upright, so it can be used both for Left-handed and Right-handed people, and when held sideways it's like a NES controller with 2 more buttons.
ShortFingeredShreder As a younger brother, I feel you. My parents kept buying me Madcatz controllers because they were the cheapest, but they are always awful and unresponsive.
As the oldest who owns all the game systems, I can't relate. I do however only have first party controllers for every system I own except Wii. I still get the one in best condition, but my siblings do get first party controllers.
+Alex Snitzer The N64 wasn't the first console to have an analog control stick. That honour went to Europe's 1292 Advanced Programmable Video System back in 1976. Following that was the disastrous Atari 5200.
I've got the Boomerang. It works okay, but the stick itself spins in place and slips off your thumb easily. And the controller itself isnt comfortable to use for an extended time.
I always thought the SuperPad was one of the best 64 controllers, the analog even has a metal stick instead of plastic. I don't play with anything else personally unless I have too.
Another controller you should look out for is an ultra-rare twin-stick controller I've seen but not been able to find much info on. It's called Alpha 64 and was made by Nyko. Just seems bizarre and the only games I know that even possibly could use both sticks are Goldeneye and Perfect Dark.
I have one I found at a flea market for $1, but the shoulder buttons need fixing, and yeah it's weird as you can flip a small switch on the back to use either the left or right analog stick(can't use both at the same time, and some games freak out when you flip the switch in mid game play), and it's the design Nintendo should have done with as thumb sticks are built like tanks with a metal shaft, and are tighter then even new official N64 controllers. Also it was made by Nyko. here is a page that has a review on the controller www.gamerevolution.com/review/alpha64
I had one back in high school around 2000-01, was the first thing I ever bought online. Decent controller overall, very reminiscent of the Dual Shock since has twin Z buttons too.
My PS2 reacquisition of 2015 had a awesome Mad Catz. But it's got sold on along with the console. Well, "sold" more like given away to "eventually" receive money for it.
I have the super pad 64 the nice one with the layout that honestly works and works nice but yes there is always need to improve like the fact the analog stick is on a metal post and can break off
I like this controller too. The left side is a tad large, but I'm 6'5" tall with meaty hands. I welcome the extra size. In games like Duke Nukem the analog stick moved you, and the D-pad changed weapons. With a stock controller it was a pain moving your hand back and forth. So smooth with this controller.
I actually have the N64 glove, it used to be my "4th player option". Ive actually used it to beat my friends in goldeneye and mariocart just to rub it in.
This is probably the main channel I watch for Nintendo consoles and controllers, I always want to see what the best controller is and to see if the console is any good, thanks for making these vids!
***** well I never buy them except one a wireless SNES controller from retrobit. Similar to n64 u got. Works well. Other than that I just have the generic style controllers.
Just wanted to say I just found your channel and I absolutely love it. You make such high quality content for such a new channel. You have some really fun videos and I hope you continue making them. Loved learning about all of these cool controllers
i own the n64 glove in the box, i never used it cause its just in too good of condition to use. but there was one for the ps2 and i tried that one and it was decent
2:56 There was a variation of that pad, the Makopad, which you can see in the selection from the UK's Official Nintendo Magazine (0:17, top left). I always wondered what that would be like to use, but if the Super Pad 64 is uncomfortable, then chances are the Makopad would be the same. Which is a shame, as it was one of the more intriguing controllers to look at when I was a kid. On another note, the Arcade Shark looks awesome. Never had any fighters other than Smash Bros on my N64, but I would've tried to get it for the novelty alone. Having a D-pad along with a stick reminds me of the Hitbox Cross-Up.
Man, that Ultra Racer 64 takes me back. After a while, that was the only way anyone would challenge me on Mortal Kombat Trilogy was using that atrocity of a controller. It actually worked moderately decently with Turok 2.
I too have had the Interact brand Superpad 64 featured at the three minute mark. As a matter of fact I've owned two separate units of it. The first one I used regularly until the top of the thumbstick broke off. I later managed to find another one at a local Gamestop and bought it as a replacement. It too eventually had the top of it's thumbstick break off, go figure! The top of the thumbstick breaking off seems to be a recurring problem, possibly a design flaw.
The first superpad controllers' Z button will often get stuck; I have several of them that are so wedged in that they're unusable. The second superpad has a control stick that can COME OFF. Which is a load of shit.
I had a gamecube style controller I bought at a GameStop back when the N64 was still being sold there. I had found 2 of them and I loved the controllers, except that they seemed to break easily. They felt great to use and worked fine after we replaced them.
3:07 I have a Similar Controller to that! I have a Super Pad 64 Plus and the only thing that is different is it has Auto, and Slow Buttons out above the Start Button but I actually find it better than the Normal N64 Controller! because that the only 3rd Party N64 Controller I own! All the others I own are all made by Nintendo!
This is a great video! i grew up owning an N64 and using the standard controllers, but it's fun seeing the various controllers for the N64, not to mention the alternatives for keeping the original controllers in tact.
I just stumbled upon your channel yesterday and already started watching every single video you’ve made! There really awesome and keep up the amazing work. Also for you viewers the weirder controllers start at 4:00
As a child I remember having the Super Pad 64, didn't remember it's name, the black one with the weird angle as you say, but as a child I LOVED that controller, ESPECIALLY more than the three grip controller that came with the console at the time, would be interesting to see if I still loved it as an adult!!!
I actually really liked the Superpad (the 2-prong one). It fitted my hands in a more comfortable way than the standard official controller, and it has survived far more hours of use than the analogue sticks of several official controllers.
I gotta show some love for that Boomerang "Superpad 64". Always ended up using it cause friends wouldn't get near it and now it's my favorite controller
That black Super Pad 64 was my go to back in the day! So many hours of WCW/NWO Revenge on that thing! I loved it back then. I don't know how I would feel using one now.
I completely agree, he’s insane probably didn’t even try it. I’ve never met anyone that has tried that and hasn’t loved it. The stick alone is miles ahead of the stock one.
I had the luck to get my hands on the Hori on a bazaar since I was a kid (same color too), and yep, unless you play games that REALLY needed the D-pad (like Kirby 64 or Pokemon Stadium and whatnot), it is gloriously confortable!
When I saw the V3 it brings me back memories! I still have it! I used it quite a lot for Star Wars Episode 1 Racer! It was so damn better to play easily with it than the official controller!
It feels so good to play it, with all the speed! I remember that when I played this at one of my brother's house, he let me play it with the game project on all his wall with the lights out. It's so immersive!
Matijony ...I have SWE1R and a V3 (though the cable to the pedals broke (that plastic stabiliser pin snapped) so I have to use the face buttons on the wheel) but I don't think I ever tried combining the two (WipEout 64 was kinda fun with the V3 though), I gotta remember to try that sometime.
Redhotsmasher I have all the V3 set, not just the wheel, so it looks really like if I was in a real car! And it all still working even after more than 10 years!
I have the big arcade pad/joystick thing and the handheld wheel. They're both amazing for any racing game, especially Mario Kart, and the arcade pad works great for Super Mario 64. The joystick on the arcade pad also screws off of the d-pad if you want to use it that way or just for storage. Pretty neat devices actually, just a bit limited to what they actually work well with
I have the 2 handle superpad 64 controller and it is horrible the left grip never feels right and you aren't really sure which way is up on the stick atleast i got it for dirt cheap at 1 buck.
I love this video! I actually own the Super Rare N64 Power Glove, The Boomerang Controller, The Hori Pad Mini, and quite a few of the beginning aftermarket controllers. Although I do not have a wireless N64 Controller, and that is something I would just adore and Love to get my hands on for my collection!!! Good video man!
When my family got our N64 (just after they came out) we got a controller with it that was similar to the original except all three grips were a lot wider. We fondly called it the “chubbs” controller, since it basically looked like a regular controller that had put on a few pounds, but unfortunately we got rid of it before too long.
Probably my secondary N64 Controller behind my Hori Pad is my Joycard 64 by Hudson. It's shaped like the original N64 controller, but it has better grips on the handles and it has turbo switches. The perfect Mario Party controller. It was originally this smokey color like the N64 itself, but I painted mine a camo pattern a long time ago.
Those Mad Catz controllers are really good. Some of their products are spotty, but their N64 controllers are some of the best 3rd party controllers I've ever used for a console.
I loved the Super Pad 64 that you hated. I used it instead of my first party controller back in the day. I hated the original N64 controller, but loved that one. I have never had a problem with the stick as it had a metal base. It is still my go to controller haha
i have a The Glove Reality Quest mint in box, it's actually pretty good for most games, you use your wrist for the analog stick which can start to hurt in longer sessions but no issue non-fps games. the D-pad however is made of a very cheap plastic and feels terrible but the rest of the controller has good build quality and feels good to use while being a 1-handed controller.
I had the SuperPad 64 in blue. The joystick fell off at some point never to be found again, so now it's just a pointy metal needly thing sticking out of the controller... But it still works!!
I had the Madcat in black, and I loved it. It was way more responsive than the stock N64 controller. Made playing OoT with it's clunky movement a lot smoother. And be honest, Ocarina of Time's movement was really clunky at times. So was Jet Force Gemini's movement, and the Madcat helped a lot in that game too. Love the Madcat, and the Turbo feature was amazing for spamming attacks, rolls, (OoT) or shots (JFG) with single shot weapons like the Pistol, and even the bow in OoT, to a certain extent.
I have that glove. Found it in a store and promptly looked it up; there was almost no information online. Brought it home, hooked it up, and it was a NIGHTMARE, just an absolute nightmare. It seems specifically designed to cause wrist strain. Rotating your hand and wrist around moves the analog stick, and you have to move it a LOT to push the stick all the way. It actually functions fine, it's just a nightmare to actually use.
Ever hear of the Championship Joystick for the SNES? Incredibly rare and obscure, but absolutely fantastic. It's basically a giant plastic box with actual Happ arcade buttons and a Joystick, and it's phenomenal for Turtles in Time, Street Fighter, and Smash TV.
I want that Hori Pad...
ikr, ive been dreaming about that thing for years
Yeah, you've really gotta keep an eagle eye on eBay if you don't want to pay a fortune! I ended up getting mine for just under $50. :)

"It's really not that bad" - the nicest thing anyone's ever said about a Mad Catz controller.

Neither did particularly well, did they? All the more reason for Nintendo to be leery of the inclusion on the N64 controller.
Left handle for 2D games, middle handle for 3D games (which Nintendo calls "2D" nowadays because of 2DS)
That's pretty funny man.

We fondly called it the “chubbs” controller, since it basically looked like a regular controller that had put on a few pounds, but unfortunately we got rid of it before too long.
Just saw two of your videos and I like your stuff man! Subscribed.
Thank you!
Every time the camera changes in the intro I drooled more and more
Probably my secondary N64 Controller behind my Hori Pad is my Joycard 64 by Hudson.
I had the madcatz one and the wheel. I completely forgot I had them and showed my mom and she remembered me playing with the racing wheel. Thank you
cool video
i never seen most of that equipment
for that console
inspires me to do some artifact finding!
I just found the glove at the flea market for $30, is that good?
Yeah, not bad at all! I've gotten two since this video 😂
@@Nintendrew haha cool 😄
speaking from experience I think the Mad Catz controller is very good. It just feels nicer to hold in your hands and it works great
I have that glove.
