Fun fact about DMA Design/Rockstar, the DMA came from Amiga programming manuals and "direct memory access" but they would always tell journalists it "Doesn't Mean Anything".
Hyundai used to be the biggest corporation in south korea back in 20th century. Started as a construction company, Hyundai used to do all sort of things, and releasing imported nintendo consoles by ″Hyundai Electronics″ (Hyundai Jeonja/현대전자) was one of their business. NES, Gameboy, Super Famicom, and Nintendo 64 were released by them. But due to financial crisis in south korea back in 1997 along with death of Hyundai's original founder Ju-young Jeong, Hyundai was split into dozens of companies, one of them being that famous Hyundai Motor Company Group. Hyundai Electronics is forever gone back then (Some of their business were moved to ″SK Hynix″. It's currently well-known world wide for computer RAM.), and nintendo products has been imported by company called Daewon until 2006, when nintendo of korea was founded/and still going strong ever since. Fun history lesson from drew's korean subscriber!
There's a used game and toy store in West Wichita that used to be a Game Xchange, and they have a Cruisin' USA arcade machine that has the "COMING SOON TO NINTENDO ULTRA 64" demo announcement. A massive piece of retro gaming history being preserved.
I have a region free tray installed in my system but I also still swap out the game backs. How else will all those copies of NFL Quarterback Club ever serve any useful purpose?
Ahh my favorite console of all time! Am I biased? Absolutely. Blinded by Nostalgia? Most definitely! But no other console has given me the same cherished memories of gathering 3 friends and playing some of the BEST multiplayer games known to mankind.
I remember there was a copy of Super Mario 64 playing at a McDonald's. Funny thing was that the control stick was screwed up, so Mario was drunkenly stumbling along Bob-omb Battlefield.
1. An engraved batch number on the back label of an N64 cartridge is important if you're an N64 cartridge collector, looking to add to your collection. There are many reproduction N64 cartridges for sale on Amazon, eBay, Facebook Marketplace etc., either trying to be passed off as legit, or the seller doesn't realize they've got a repro. One way to easily tell is if the back label is missing an engraved number. Those cheap Chinese reproduction cartridges usually don't have numbers engraved into the back label. Authentic N64 cartridges will always have two digits or two digits and a letter engraved into the top right corner of the back label. Though, this may be harder to see in a photo, especially if the photo is in poor quality. 2. Another option if you're looking to play Japanese cartridges on a U.S. console or vice-versa is to buy an adapter. I own an adapter cartridge called Ultra 64, and it has a cartridge connector on top, just like a GameShark. You can insert Japanese cartridges, and all the adapter does is act as a passthrough. A GameShark will work as well if you happen to have a working one laying around.
Nintendo's biggest rival, PlayStation, was also powered by a SGI chip. Like SGI had Nintendo as their 3rd choice, so was the inventor of the Wii mote motion control technology. That guy also presented and was rejected first by Sony, and Microsoft, and Nintendo was just his 3rd choice for presenting to
Oh man, when the N64 first came out, I wasn't that big of a fan, but later on I became obsessed with it in college, because it's such a great party multiplayer system. Seriously, so many fun memories playing Beerio Kart or Smash Brothers!
Interesting that the N64 also had an arcade counterpart. I know the Wii had one as well called Revolution Arcade (RVA), but it was only used for a few Capcom games
The region lock just being slightly different shapes for the carts was pretty smart, if easy to get around. I'm so glad we don't have to deal with that stuff anymore, though!
Thanks you for making a vid , with new things i didnt know about 64, i watch so many of these and they all tend to go over the same mundane facts everyone else has already covered, nice to learn new things!!
64 will always be associated with Nintendo! I Did not even hear about Fact #4. That is crazy. Yet another poor decision by SEGA of Japan. I taught my kids how to remember 8x8 is Nintendo 64! To this day anything that adds up to 64 I quickly say, Nintendo 64. Thanks for the Nintendrew64 information!
Modifying it was so easy that the used N64 I bought a thousand years ago was already modified and I didn't even know until I plugged an import game with no problem.
I remember I got a Japanese version of Super Mario 64 used at a video game store. They had shaved off the lower corners of the game pak so that it would work in any Nintendo 64 console.
Speaking of Silicon Graphics, yeah they went to Sega and supposedly Tom Kalinski was in favor of it, but the head honchos in Japan weren't, as you said. Tom was the guy in charge of Sega's marketing in America and insisted on bundling Sonic the Hedgehog into every system along with a 149 price tag to combat the Super Nintendo's launch of 199. Japan hated the idea but let him go with it anyway. And thus Sega saw skyrocketing success, the most successful company to rival Nintendo up to that point. Tom was also against the idea of the 32X add-on, arguing instead to just focus on Genesis titles until the Saturn's launch. But HQ back in Japan said that something was needed to counter the Atari Jaguar and 3DO console. And we all know how that went. I know it sounds like Tom was the guy essentially responsible for success in the west and it's possible that some of this is just 20/20 hindsight but we do know that he was the one responsible for the bundle with Sonic, which was a fantastic move and in-favor of going with Silicon Graphics for Sega's next console. It makes for a fascinating "What If?" scenario where we wonder where Sega would be today with him at the helm.
Great video! After being on the internet for so long, you'd think I'd know all there is to know about the N64, but it's nice to be humbled haha, real interesting tidbits here!
There is a region lock in software on the 64 in some games, it is not entirely done with the plastic tabs. There are some issues when people try to play Hey You Pikachu in consoles that doesnt match the region it was meant for
Seeing Seta 64 games run on a flash cart is very similar to the Dreamcast ODEs running Atomiswave games. Wish the PS1 could do that with Namco System 11 and 12 games on an ODE as it is based off PS1 hardware after all.
Man the gaming landscape would be completely different if Sega went with Silicon Graphics for hardware. I’m guessing the Saturn would essentially be an N64 with CD based games, which likely would have sold well in the west. But we wouldn’t get all the amazing 2D arcade games that the system is well known for.
For region lock in the EU we always required an adapter and and another cart inserted "behind". Not all carts would work, usually Mario64 would make it work.
Hello Nintendrew. Big fan of your videos. I met you this past weekend at Game On in Phoenix. I met you right in front of John Riggs table. Great meeting you and always looking forward to the next video. Take care.
Ah yes, just like Samsung handled Korean ports of Sega products, Hyundai did the same for Nintendo until 1997, when one of their branches, Daewon took over, and in 2006, Nintendo founded their very own Korean branch. Speaking of Korea, did you know that WarioWare: Move It!! was changed there? A lot of the old-timey Japan stuff was changed to old-timey Korea stuff. And a monkey. And Wario's usual microgame clothes.

Nah it’s really not good lack of 3rd party lack of rpgs and JRPG. Now people love it as it was a big leap in graphics and they are stuck in the past. Also rare and acclaim carried the N64 the lack of capcom support and square and Enix hurt the N64

I'm pretty sure 128gb isn't the max. I put 256gb in my admittenly normal psp and it would fine and i've heard of people who put in more. The best advise is to get the plugin GC lite or game catagories like which let's you sort your psp games in multiple faster loading folders. It turns out the menu loading speed is limited to how much it has to load at the same time.
I don't know if anybody has said this. I highly ask Drew that you do not tell people to Dremel anything. I have seen this on countless systems I have come across. It disappoints me when there are non-destructive ways to circumvent certain things. Try and always preserve original parts of these consoles. I advocate this as a person who repairs and refurbishes, and not DKOldies style repair and refurbishing. Thank you and keep up the vids.
I assume that this will be buried, but I wanted to know @Nintendrew , what is your holy grail now? What gaming item is on the tippy top of your list of desires that you currently do not own?
Nintendrew looks like a former Reddit mod who started going outside and taking care of himself. Don’t mean that as an insult, I’ve followed you for years.
I figured I'd get a comment about this... 😂 It's actually "Hyun-day" according to the company themselves, but I thought an accurate pronunciation might sound try-hard/awkward from me. So I went with the pronunciation I learned growing up in the south. 🤠🙃
Out of the 5 "facts" you mentioned, the first two are wrong: 1) Space Station not working correctly is not a "fatal flaw" of the expansion pack, it's simply a bug in the game that was overlooked/ignored (the jumper pack already was available to developers at the time of the games release) 2) the N64 region lock is not analog only and also not only a 50/60Hz issue, each cartridge contains a region-coded security-chip (CIC) that prevents PAL games to boot on NTSC systems and vice versa, swapping cartridge shells or removing tabs inside the cartridge slot does not work in that case. What you describe only works between japanese and american games because they share the same CIC types. I stopped watching after that. For the next video, please have someone with knowledge of the topic at hand fact-check before publishing.
Hey, there! Sorry you were disappointed in this video, but I'm here to hopefully clear up some points. 😅 Regarding the 1st fact, you're absolutely right - it was an issue with sloppy code on DMA's part by all accounts. Calling it the "fatal flaw" of the expansion pak was really just my fun of saying "the only potential downside to using one". My bad if that wasn't clear, though. In the second fact, I specifically didn't dive into the differences between NTSC and PAL cartridges because that's not what that tidbit was about. My point was that there's no digital barrier between playing Japanese games on North American systems, and vice-versa. My understanding is the CIC is not relevant in that case, and only helps to prevent the use of unlicensed carts. Sometimes we get more deep into the tech side (one of my earliest vids was on making N64 repros when they had just become feasible 😛), but more often than not, my videos are meant to appeal to a broader audience. I'll often use colloquialisms or nutshell explanations to convey complex ideas. I'm disappointed that that came across as inaccurate info, but totally understand if that kind of thing is not your cup of tea. Thanks for stopping by, regardless!
