Y'know, all these bad plot threads were something I completely failed to notice in my playthoughs of the games, and I think I know why.
This RPG is *L-O-N-G*
Everything is so padded out and story events are so spread out along the many hours of gameplay that I spend either grinding or wandering around endlessly that I just forget most of the important details. When the plot is talked about at length like this, I can definitely see where it all falls apart, but when you're playing for so long and side-tracked by hours of filler that in the end doesn't even matter, its hard to get everything straight, if any.
Plot gripes aside, I still really enjoyed my time with these games, even though the openendedness of The Lost Age did get me lost on what to do next at various times. I more enjoyed the game for its combat. Simple, if a little easy, but an enjoyable time.
Air's Rock still sucks though.
3/4 of the games you have reviewed and made videos on, I have either never played or heard of, and yet I'm addicted to them. Very entertaining, funny, and brilliantly and professionally scripted. I often see your old vids that I've already watched pop up on my feed and think, "damnit, post another already." Always happy to see a new one rear its head.

Golden Sun is one of those games that gets its positivity from nostalgia induced reputation alone and that just makes me sad, it’s like the writers weren’t even making an attempt to tell a story.
I was actually surprised that you didn't make any mention of Isaac no longer being mute anymore! (And the one random line of dialogue from Felix in Shaman Village)
The game would've been so much better without Kraden, or if he'd been the antagonist all along. I still have so much fun with these games, but your criticisms are valid and I agree with everything you mentioned. Theres way too many gaping plotholes by the end of TLA and the lack of plot/character development is grating. Loved your vids, dude! I hope you bash some more RPGs in the future (breath of fire, final fantasy, tales of, or grandia series?)

The Izumo story with the dragon is ripped wholesale from Japanese Shinto lore. The Dragon is Yamata no Orochi. The guy is Susanoo-no-mikoto and his sword is Ama-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi ("Sword of the Gathering Clouds of Heaven"). Also the "dragon's bane" is just booze, they're just getting the dragon super wasted/drunk. Izumo is literally the name of the town in the real mythology that they took it from; really creative, right?
Dude I wish more obscure mythology got adapted like that. Acting like games never get inspired by mythology. Like 90% of the FF summons wouldn't exist if we didn't draw on what was previously done already. I swear people are just bitching to bitch.

I still love this game a lot even though I agree with you on pretty much everything lol.
Its probably because I was a child at the time and I loved exploring and getting lost in its colorful world with people I loved. I even redownloaded it on Wii U just to be a child again.
I even enjoy the mazes. As simple as they are, it gave me "something" to do other than random encounters. Dungeon design in most RPGs nowadays are just straight hallways with occasional treasure on the side, or a ton of cutscenes.
Pretty much sums up my thoughts for Lost Age once you get the boat. The general concept of the main plot was fine with me, trying to reach that point... no. I had to get the guide for Lost Age because - just completely lost, and it all slows down. The dialogue can be better. Also there was that one ruin place I believe was Contigo - there's hardly much discussed about it and the hint about a place that rose into the sky didn't give much input either. That annoyed me as it would have been related to Sheva, of course there's nothing else there to provided input but Dullahan boss.
Damn it definitely sounds like a lot of things in Golden Sun were an absolute mess. Makes me wonder how the third game played out but these videos were remarkably funny. Nice job and PSYNERGY ROCK!!!!!
Just found your channel and I'm very surprised that you aren't more well known, the production value on not just this series but your normal videos is great! Definitely earned a sub here, looking forward to seeing more great content.
Let's be real, we who are old enough all have nostalgia for this game because it was really graphically pretty for the time. The story was not even on our radar
If people aren't watching your channel by now then wtf are they doing? This is an amazing video that perfectly caps of the 4 video series. I honestly look forward to your new videos more than any other channel on UA-cam. You do something different that I can't find anywhere else. Here you are doing unique style reviews on old games that most people have forgotten or never played while the rest of UA-cam is trying to cash in on new trends with no new opinions to add.
I've been watching your videos since you only had just over 100 subscribers and now you're finally starting to get some of the recognition you deserve with 1.5k. I really look forward to seeing your channel grow even more so that hopefully it gives you ad revenue more than just pennies so that you can have more time to make these amazing videos.

I never thought these games were very good, but the production values are top notch, and on a hot new handheld no less. I can see why it was successful. Good God the only thing these games did well is introduce a generation to the Japanese role playing game. I think that's worth something IMHO.

Yo, so I just stumbled across your channel and oh my god is your stuff really great!!!! (the amount of punctuation shows how effective your video was, jesus christ I never knew that was a mechanic in Golden Sun)
I originally found your channel, because I saw everyone getting hyped for Crystal Chronicles remaster. I love that game, but I'd gone to the effort of beating it a couple years back and realised how much of that game was just nostalgia and playing games with friends, so I wanted to look up reviews to see if anyone else was pointing out the flaws with the game, and how it really wouldn't hold up. Your video on that was all I had to say, but better articulated and more complete than the rambling thoughts in my head.
Saw you had videos on Golden Sun, and was eager to watch those next. I played those GBA games when I was like, 9 years old and thought it was the best goddamn shit ever. Hadn't touched the series until the DS one 8 years later, and I distinctly remember thinking "what happened, the writing got so much worse". I never ended up going back to the GBA ones, but this 4-series of videos have shown me that the writing didn't (just) get worse, but that I was just a stupid kid unable to pick up on inconsistencies, which my memories just glossed over. The biggest revelation has been that I always remembered the puzzles as being slightly difficult, but enjoyable and feeling smart for beating them - which you completely blew out of the water and really showed how much repetition I was willing to put up with just for that little jingle when you get the reward.
Anyway, I should have been in bed an hour ago. I hope your subs grow to the size you honestly deserve, and I really look forward to any future videos. You've got a good niche that will be found at some point, and I'm that's super exciting that I'll be able to watch that too.

K-Bashing one of my favourite game series has never been more satisfying, I can see the constant plot holes, the mediocore writing, but if Golden Sun 1&2 are supposed to be a prologue to the main story I can see that by stretching the game to be into 2 whole GBA games can make it a bit convoluted plot that doesn't follow up anything because they didn't plan out the plot that far ahead.
We also have to remember that the game was meant to be one full game for the N64, but no matter how you look at it Kraden is a piece of shit and I just really think this game would be better without the dumbass even existing. Which is why I think he could be the main villian of the series if they decide to follow up after Dark Dawn.
Other than that, I am still going to recommend this game, because playing it for the first time for anyone will be fun unless you are super critical and have played many better games than Golden Sun.
I really believe that Golden Sun has a lot of potential and with the deep lore that it has it can be used to re-invent the series from scratch. Sure, characters don't have that much depth or growth, but if you build off of what you made and make it better than it is still very possible to get the scores that they make for them.
No one can really deny how appealing Golden Sun is, it's colourful, the sprites are really nice for a GBA, the soundtrack is damn good, the sound effects are awesome, a lot of good lore and deep mechanics. The story seems to stretch out a lot of the times, the puzzles suffer from being samie, even though at first it's fine, but playing multiple playthroughs can be really boring. Still I love how that their aren't any true villians, but just antagonists that get in your way.
I love Golden Sun and while is falls a bit short on story and character depth. It's still a fun ride, looks and sounds great and for an old ass game in it's time. It's pretty damn good, otherwise I loved your video K-Bash. I hope to see Dark Dawn in the future. :D

also yes, the game has strong appeal - even now I have to compliment a lot about it, but so many already have so I kept it short in the video.
Maybe they'll write a cultural narrative with significant impact next time. Seems like a good angle.

I loved these games as a teenager, but I did not realise just how contrived the conflict between the two parties are. They had to straight up lie to create a misunderstanding so anything could happen.

Never played these games, but I did play Dark Dawn. I remember giving up about 2/3 of the way through when the tedium had set in ages ago and I realised I didn't know why my characters were doing any of the things they were doing.
I will admit. I love this game and _almost_ everything about it.
This game taught me how to actually be good at games. I used to absolutely suck at RPGs. Then I played this and my puzzle-solving skills improved. Eat that, teachers, saying video games can't teach.
One thing I'm not okay with is the fact that Felix does all this helpful stuff across the world without a reason.
You bring up some valid points. The storytelling could use a bit of work.

To be honest there’s a lot of flaws about the series that I overlooked or just didn’t understand when I first played as a kid. I still love the series even if the story writing is hot garbage with plotholes and character development got shafted by Lost Age. Anyway, hope you can review Dark Dawn one day.
Btw would you mind sharing what software you use for your videos? I have zero experience with editing and recording with videos and i was hoping you might be able to give me a few pointers.
I record with "Action!" and edit in Premiere Pro. Premiere isn't a budget software, but it's easy to use in my experience. Other than that I use photoshop for editing images at times.

Perhaps giving an out to not killing Isaac and co. / helping them is not the best of writing, but... I'm confident the alternative would not have been received well. I believe most fans at the time were looking to see how the two parties would resolve their conflict and potentially join. Not remove one of the other. So basically, I think a lot of people forgive how this played out - of course we'd want to help Isaac.
Isaac knows Felix is alive because he heard of Felix during his own adventure in TLA (both NPC dialogue confirm this as well as the Sun Sagas in Dark Dawn). I know Golden Sun has lots of plot points, but some of them are not XD

So, I liked the first Golden Sun game...despite me never playing it until I got a smart phone and downloaded My Boy which is a GBA Emulator to play it. Wanna know something even better? I played Dark Dawn first before any of these games. So I was hella confused on what was happening. Thankfully that game had a dictionary, yes an actual dictionary that when words were in red, you can tap the screen to get more info of said word in the top screen. Genius. That still doesn't amount to the whole confusion that I had endured when playing it the first time, yet I still enjoyed my time with it.
Anyways, I played eventually played GS on my phone then got to Lost Age, or in your case, The Maze Age. I put it on hold after clocking in about...8 hours into the game I think? I put that game on hold for about...4 years now. I just didn't like the fact that I had to keep a guide open to play Maze Age in order to progress. Like what in the actual hell? I still don't know if I'll ever return to that Maze Age game. GS and Dark Dawn? Probably.

Recently found this channel and was checking out some reviews. I was very surprised, in a bad way, by the Golden Sun reviews. I loved this game a lot as a kid and certainly, the nostalgia of a simpler time made me look fondly back on it. As an adult, when revisited through the perspectives of other people, I was able to acknowledge and accept that it was a very flawed game in many respects, but I still liked playing it. Simplicity is its own merit and GS's draw is just that. It's a simple and prettily-presented JRPG. That's why it's considered a classic of the GBA era.
Now, I'm not saying I think your review is garbage but I do think it is expressed in bad faith. There's merits to the game that go completely unacknowledged because the review seems to be on a non-stop hate train, and I mean that while there were certainly moments that I found funny or relatable, what really put me off is your attitude in this video compared to some from more recent times that I watched before this one. I thought "Man, KBash sounds like a really thoughtful and funny guy, and he definitely tries to look at things from all sorts of angles," then I click on this and there's not really any of that here, just one extremely negative and hateful person whose ranting genuinely made me very uncomfortable. I'm not sure if this is your old style of reviewing, your *real* review style or just that you really didn't like Golden Sun that much, but I can't say I like this one ultimately. I'm not even offended, but I guess I'm disappointed.

If you want to find all Djinns and do everything without taking forever, then yes, you do need a guide.
Thankfully there's a german website for that called Golden Sun Zone and iirc he also has an English version online.
Charmfully written and so much work and love went into that.
But yeah, this game is a mess when it comes to directing the player into the right direction.

Airs Rock comes canonicaly before Gaia Rock, thats how Sheba knew there are more rocks. Sheba knows about the 4 elements, she saw 2 elemental rocks already, chances are the other 2 exist as well, besides Sheba is actually smart in the game.

Well, I'm back. Little surprise that by the time I got here, the number of dislikes on your video has dropped to nothing. Literally zero as of this comment!
Anyhow, in short, my feelings on your argument are: "Correct."
It's impressive how much Golden Sun squanders its potential by essentially being more about going on a world tour than on focusing on its story. There's so much you could do with the story and characters to make it more interesting if they just took all the material and tried to put it together in a sensible way with actual story themes.
Take the misunderstandings and properly contextualize Isaac and Garet as zealots. Have S&M say it's not worth telling them since they won't believe ZA TRUTH. But Felix insists and tries to tell them ZA TRUTH, but Isaac is just all 'no, traitor!' Easy. Done. Now the plot writes itself and have Isaac and Garet keep chasing after the actual heroes while refusing to believe the truth. Make more encounters between the teams, or an actual trail left behind. Heck, maybe make the four crystals not all be located in Vale, so they run around the continent chasing them specifically to try and prevent them from getting the elemental rocks first. Done. Easy.
And I came up with that in about five minutes. Potential is not a merit in itself, just another reason to be disappointed with the actual product.

That's me as well. I played the first game some years ago, but I remember nothing but the beginning and end of the game. I especially remember nothing about the characters as well, which really shows how underdeveloped they were.
Ya, but the game WAS fun and I still play it from time to time. Story was wack but meh so was ff13 and that had 2 sequels. (Unearned I might add)
why? It has a well developed, understandable and fun story. I played it several years ago and I still remember all those dungeons that I had to go through and I love the characters, they are well developed, that lousy

I kinda wonder if the bad dialogue/story telling is because of the writers or partly due to poor translation
For example they were giving the dragon (you kill using light) sake not dragonsbane but to keep it an e rating in other parts of the world they changed it
thought it was funny how they wanted you to help a billionaire, with a invisibility cloak, in his quest for immortality... never had a game move me in that direction, glad they just off screened him. it really is funny like it's just obviously bad and it just fizzles out and keeps going like a lot of things that happen in the game.

....In hindsight, after looking through all this, I'll admit: Dark Dawn's plot was at least coherent and made sense, especially in comparison to the first two.
Soooo I just watched this whole series. I thought it was gonna be like Tales of Symphonia where if you restore them all it is good but not really but it's left ambiguous. Its funny bc once Alex became a god he was able to fuck him up. SO like the wise one was like ohhh I'm unable to do anything until he did it then immediately beats the shit out of him

@@KBash man, when I was younger, I had to watch my mom play through legend of zelda ocarina of time, before I could play. Process was streamlined with the walkthrough. She couldn't handle the same three day cycle in majoras mask.
You didn't explore the island the turtle gives you a ride too to fight that one headless boss who cheats unless you use a cheating move set strategy, which is allowed in the game.
