Very informative show. My recent experience with the prison industrial complex was a glorious junket to Texas for a Aramark convention. I went with client, who work in their food service operations at the local university. They trotted out my client and a formerly incarcerated person as examples of their employment practices and presented a cornucopia of their various food and uniform products, internationally. I imagine that they can afford to bid low on prison services. In the 70’s and 80’s growing up in NY, I knew the costs for friends and family, who were ensnared in the system and now they have doubled down on what seemed unjust at that time.

Thank you for this, Jason. I'd love a follow-up show on how the formerly incarcerated adjust to life upon release. I'd wonder if many formerly (long-term) incarcerated are not unlike people who leave military service--scarred by the experience, deeply institutionalized and unable to cope with the chaos that comes with "freedom"--more like Brooks from Shawshank Redemption than Red or Andy.
