I helped out Ken Costello, MiniCooper S, class champion 1964 at Brands. I trailered his car to various meets. We failed scrutineering at the winning event. "Get in" says Ken, "we'll sort this!" Off we went onto Death Hill, all decaled up in race trim, to his workshop in Farningham at the bottom of the hill. A hairy ride at 120mph with no seat or seatbelt, sitting on the tool box. Entertaining for the spectators queing to get in, though. We changed the exhaust, and back up the hill, on the wrong side of the road, passing the traffic queue and back to Scrutineering just in time. Ken won the race, beating his main rival in the Broadspeed Mini. Ken got signed up with CrippSpeed and that ended my duties as Ken's driver to and from events. Ken went on to convert MGB GTs to V8s using the Rover/Buick engine. AustinRover or was it still Leyland saw the successful conversion and decided to build their own V8 MG and promptly cut off Ken's supply of engines. He sourced a few from Belgium, but that is all I know. I went to Canada for 3years and lost touch.
Was a PHB in the mid 1980s and they rather unusually had a kart race during a club meeting. They had someone from the kart side of things use an old 1970s Volvo estate car as the pace car, who promptly lost the back of the car and spun it all the way down PHB in front of all the karts, and to a huge cheer from the crowd.
8.55 in the video. That's a series my university races in. The yellow car that gets hit (40 T.Tudor) is my lecturer. Fully student led race team. Cool to see ourselves here
I remember a volkswagen racing cup uk crash i saw in late 2016 here just after i got into motorsport. The cars went out shot and if you look closely it is likely two of thr cars rolled violently before smashing into the barriers. Very few people have seen it but for those that have some think it is likely they blocked all the other views in fear of criticism as it would have been by far the biggest crash in the championship on front of Paul Iven's crash that happened there as well. I can't assume though.
That was some disgusting driving by the guy in the Golf @4:15 to, as the commentator said, keep pushing and pushing until he rammed the Scirocco into an almighty shunt.
Yes there were a lot of comments at the time. This crash was in 2016. The Golf driver was excluded from the meeting which cost him 2 victories & he had points added to his race licence. The Scirocco driver Darelle Wilson has been racing in TCR for a few years now.
@@richardforrest9230 Glad he was excluded, that was really awful behaviour. Ah it's Darelle Wilson in Scirocco... ya he was involved in the VAG championship for quite a while too.
Watched this video- and was surprised no motorcycle crashes shown.. Back in 1966-7 I watched Agostini aboard his MV3 chasing Mike the Bike on his favorite Honda- the 350 cc Six.. Ago lost it on this bend, and he and his machine flew across the track Ago had his hands out and was more or less on his back.. smoke came off his gloves! Thankfully he was not hurt. Back then there was a bank to the left of the corner.. not that huge sand-pit they have now! Sadly I also recall two fatal crashes on that corner.. Upon reflection I realize some folk reading my comments may have not been born in 1966!! [I'm 80- not out!]
Thanks for your comment & that fantastic story. My short answer to why there aren’t any bike crashes on the video is because I’m not into motorbikes & I’ve never been to a bike meeting. I’ve just always been into cars!
I haven’t been since they put the new fencing up. I guess I’ll find out at the beginning of next season! There are some videos from the November truck meeting where people stood further back up the banking but then you do get people’s heads in the way & usually when something dramatic is happening!
I re-shelled a mates 205 GTI after he crashed it here. That gravel gets everywhere, from in between the tyre beads and wheel rims to inside the chassis rails, you never see the end of it.
I’m not getting Forza 8 because they dropped this legendary track. One of my earliest memories is seating on the cheap seats on the bank at the bottom the hill, with my Gramps watching cars and trucks, and bikes hurtling round the track. It’s a test of stability as much as drivers ability
Been going to Brands since 1954. I remember the commentator, John Bolster, saying: "Salvadori (Roy) has just passed Uren (Jeff) on the top straight." Very funny, and even shocking in the late 50s. I've seen some shocking accidents there over the years, but safety standards are much higher these days.
The irony is that the new fencing is part of work on Paddock Hill bend to make the track even safer - the only problem is that it has ruined one of the best spectating areas in the process
@@richardforrest9230 I preferred the otherside of Druids. I used to park my VW Tansporter up on the bank by the fence and invite people up onto its flatbed as a grandstand. Could see part of Paddock Hill Bend, but the trees blocked the bottom and up to Druids. I'm talking over half a century ago! A pity I can't post pics on here.
John Bolster was a very entertaining commentator, steadily getting p!ssed during the racing. He with his brother built their own racer, but I don't remember him driving it. I remember him in a vintage Bentley, and Lord Montagu in his Prince Henry Vauxhaul. There were great events held there including the Scuderia Sud Ferraris, using the petrol station down at Farningham during practice sessions. They hadn't been warned that their cars were illegal on public roads!
In 1985 I was working for Rushen Green Racing running Martin Donnelly, so will have been there..... And I have seen some real carnage at Paddock Hill....... In one Race I had Ian Ashley an Ex F1 driver in my car, Before he even reached Paddock he had taken ALL 4 corners off the Car!!!... And I was in the Paddock when Jonny Herbert had his massive crash in the worst F3000 race ever held.... Many more stories to tell..... :-))
It really is an iconic corner & the scene of so many spectacular incidents over the years. Paddock Hill Bend and the Formula Ford Festival are virtually guaranteed to liven up even the wettest October day.
Yes it’s definitely the end of an era for spectating at that corner. Hope they can do something to make it better - even opening the Hailwoods grandstand at every meeting would be a start. At least that would give a bit of height over the fencing. Looks like I’ll have to visit different circuits next year
Sorry for the years of probably filling your videos on first laps and races with the click of my camera shutter while standing next to you as you took a lot of those videos!!😉😉😉 Although the Mg at the end did its best to destroy it as I was standing directly in front of him making eye contact when he finally came to a rest!!!😂😂
There’s so much other noise - the cars, the loudspeakers etc I don’t think I ever noticed the clicking! Yes that MG roll was one of the most spectacular I’ve filmed. I haven’t been to Brands since the new fencing was put up but like you and everyone else who loved standing at that part of Paddock Hill bend we’ll all be looking for a new place to get the best views
@richardforrest9230 Good to hear😉. Have found in the right light that I was still able to get some decent shots through it. Might be improved with a winters weathering and when they remove the old fence as part of the works🤞🏼🤞🏼. Screws up the focus, trying to go through both of the fences... Do spend a lot of the day mooching around the track, but it was a favourite spot.

4:15 I'd be mightily pissed off with the muppet shunting-off the white Golf & just how much damage he caused...
3:07 probably the most violent crash I've ever seen 😮
Kinda looks as if the driver had got off the brakes the car could have steered out of it

Oh yes the notorious paddock hill bend 😏where all action happens I know it very well. It’s the most difficult bend corner on the track. Great video

Definitely a few brown trouser moments there!

my mate had a bad one there, a photgrapher got a good snap of him though, doing a handstand in mid air
this particular view may never be seen again since there are now huge fences, covering what was a spectacular view

It was always a corner that sorted out the decent drivers from the ‘daddy’s rich’ mugs.
It’s got to be one of the best corners on any track in the world
6:04 Can Someone tell me, what’s this grey car spinning around? I know this car, but i forgot the damn name😂

Sadly due to newly erected crash fencing along the outside of Hailwoods to Druids, you won’t be able to get this brilliant footage anymore….
