rallycross started at Lydden because of the foot and mouth crisis in 1967. Rallying was cancelled using public forests and farmland so a one off event was created...on an enclosed circuit away from cattle. An instant success, won by Vic Elford in a Porsche 911.
Thank you for the info. This is my favourite sports and this one was new to me. Never bothered to find out but very nice to know. Many awesome things happened by accident.
agreed, i dint know for sure. it used to get told to me.... we got kicked out ut woods.. stupid government red tape bollards. I now sound very much like that bloke, that bloke... a year b4 i gots to strip the thread on a dry sump plug... did my apprenticeship under... in that Loughborough Junction railway arch (and machine shop in the paddocks) i was there that weekend.
This was brilliant to watch, I was there before druids. Schanche would take drifting on a new level, forget sideways, he'd be going backwards through druids and all in smooth control. He'd start 1st and finish first. Forget drifting, this was the best
Awesome! Great to see the monster Group B rally cars track racing. Those were the days! I was at Brands Hatch in '85 & '86 for the European and British GP's, and a Group C sportscar race in '86. The days of the turbocharged race cars were legendary. The Lancia S4 had both a turbocharger and supercharger. Insane!!!
turboslag rallycross is the only car motorsport which is improving at the moment, the rest is dull. rallycross is the only car motorsport that hasn't collapsed between then and now.
Actually Rantanen had no chance of avoiding the collision with smith on the final start. He was standing on brake when smith changed his position from middle to inside. Smith should have watched his mirrors better and it was purely his own fault. What a pity tho.
Why is everything going backwards?..Concorde, fastest passenger plane ...gone...Japan has the bullit train we have....Basically Thomas the fecking tank engine...cars now are shit in comparison to then, first they all look the same and then..OK they have half the horsepower and are a fraction faster but imagine if they were running 650bhp with modern chassis and suspension!!!.
Remember watching this live on the BBC, thanks for uploading.
Loved watching the Rallycross from Brands Back in the 80s.
I was probably even at this meeting.
The Group B cars. Rallycross' finest hour!
Darren Martin Group B was the finest in Rallying, LEGENDARY.
Sirdiggar Just love all of those MAD motors! The sound those 6R4's made is especially intoxicating!
Sirdiggar group a was the best era of rallying.

Is that how rally cross was born? If so then very cool fact!

i was there that weekend.
I used to work with John Smith, he would tell stories about the early days testing his car in Nottingham Forest,
THIS is rallycross! Lots of action (no bitchy judges), and a creative variety of cars. I would never expect a 700hp 4WD BMW today! Great video! :)
Modent RX is quite good actually, not as good as group B but wins the pussy WRC's 6-0.

Great video. Love how Palmer just abandons the car in the middle of the track there at the end!

but the rs 200 s 😆another level
transition from dirt to asphalt is what makes racing
Don't remember JP being in Rallycross!! This is PROPER Rallycross though, not the shit we get now! Was that an Xtrac Escort JP was driving?
Yes just for 1 meeting. John used the Astra

Me neither. I just stumbled upon this by chance.
Modern RX is better than rally by far. WRC has lost it's spirit. Bunch of rich kids cruising in forrest and ott tänäkk wins :D
Never mind the RS200's etc....those MK3 escorts are killing it!
Nice to see the Group B monsters leading a life post WRC.
Never gets old
I didn't know Rally Cross was that old... Awesome!
+Bruno Cisi A lot of people think it was created for the X-Games. The truth is that rallycross was born in 1967.
+Bruno Cisi The best years !!
+Just a Random Dude x-games and GRC is shit. only about money and show. world rallycross is real driving and another level
bendikatv And what did I say to you to say that? I just said that I didn't know rally cross was that old. Just that, calm down...
I enjoyed that. It seems the Dr missed his calling. He did extremely well considering it was his first rally-cross event.
a wide variety of motors andas subtle as a house brick massive power. love it! come bzck Murray.
this is racing. short and sweet!!!!
Much more exciting than F1
No joker laps.....much better!
Stuart Kelso nothing wrong whatsoever with this style and running.. basically it's ruined today if you saw the 80's stuff
more of your up[loads Andy pelase, always good and clear
real spectator sport murry makes it even better
I was there too Ste :)
Look at those flames...............My god you can hear the lag from the turbo's too on the inboard footage.......
god i love youtube
nice to see this , i was there :P
Epic onboard footage yet they barely showed it !!!
In car cameras SUCK. Great content.
Real cars !!!
the best times 😩

real racing
700hp twin turbo metro .... that was fuckin 87 , makes you wonder what Palmer had under his right foot
‘Walker’ No smoking allowed in the Escort !!!! Not as if it’s a Doctors waiting room, eh Dr Palmer 🤣🤣🤣
£200 grand Peugeot again in 87 and it's got universal salvage on the wing lol
Jeez TWIN TURBOS on the 6R4 which were already 600hp when normally aspirated and it still can’t beat a MKIII escort 🤣🤣 brilliant
danielsonn77 the works group b 6r4 was less than 400 bhp. they didn’t get anywhere near 600bhp without forced induction.

Don't make them like that any more
I was there! Great racing not seen these days.
