As long as I speak Russian and English and study Japanese, I noticed that all of the languages sound VERY different not because of different words but because the sounds you make are really different. Both vowels and consonants, all of them. You just used to make these sounds as in your native language and you continue to use these sounds while you speak another language. That forms the accent. And if you wanna improve it then you need to understand how natives make those sounds for each letter and word. The tongue behavior, the mouth articulation - you need to notice it and learn, but nobody say about it
