@@mrsx7944 That's what Hemingway said himself in A Moveable Feast. "By then I knew that everything good and bad left an emptiness when it stopped. But if it was bad, the emptiness filled up by itself. If it was good you could only fill it by finding something better."

Now... now...lest us not forget popular culture. Life isn't ALL literature and the classics. He was making a comparison to the tremendous worldwide popularity Hemingway enjoyed. Hemingway partied with the FAMOUS. Can you think of an author that was as popular (as Gaga) worldwide? I think the comparison was meant for younger people, an analogy they would grasp.

A word of truth: Hemingway suffered a debilitating injury from a plane crash which resulted in memory loss and depression. Those two mental defects resulted in an inability to write; not anxiety and alcoholism. That is why he killed himself.

Personally, I think that in the world of literature Ernest Hemingway was among the greatest. Because he didn't just write adventure stories. He lived them. And people are still fascinated with him. I wish that he could have lived longer, but he was suffering and did what he felt he had to do.

Okay, maybe it’s because I’m not a baby boomer, but I don’t see why so many people are upset that he used the Gaga analogy. As a younger person who’s just now learning the name Hemingway, I think it was a wonderful analogy and allowed me to get a better grasp on his fame. I thought before “oh well if I didn’t know him, not that many could have!” And now I can comprehend that he was a infamous person at the time and that there was scarcely a man, woman, or child who didn’t know his name. All I knew was that he killed himself, and now I understand that so many people must have been absolutely infatuated with him, as he told grandiose stories regarding his life experiences which played him off as “the guy that you WISH you were with”. Does that alleviate anyone’s anger now?

Chris Ryan springs to mind for a writer of our generation. Never in the same league as Hemingway as a writer, but a man who lives the the story and the legend; well he was in the SAS. Hemingway wrote about war, but was never in the Army. I worked for the Red Cross, so I don't detract from what he saw in that role. I do however think that it is an overstatement to say that there is no comparrison in this generation, and JK Rowling is the biggest selling in author in history.

I really think that the comparison with Gaga at this time (2012) don't really make sens. But if it was film today or 2015 it would've made total sens because of Gaga skills that she showed and the outrageous things she did and do. My personal opinion about it. But still happy that he made a comparison with her! :)

While I enjoy his writing immensely (and the curt American realism he invokes really is marvelous) the excess photographs with guns and the corresponding wanton killing of wild animals is, unfortunately, not in the least bit admirable. This man lacked a deeper spiritual connection to reality (evidenced by both his hunting and inability to respect any woman as a wife, and certainly indicative of a shallower spiritual insight than what some feel is portrayed in his writing) and his personal decline to ultimate misery is telling of that ignorance of any genuine, deep respect for Creation, because such an awareness, and wisdom rooted in admiration of creation, fills any man who possesses it with endless joy and contentment. Wonderful writer, nevertheless, and all the best to you, Mr. Hemingway. May you find what you were looking for.

This is not only a waste of time, but worse, for it presents incorrect information. (As a blatant example, even the date of Hemingway's birth is stated incorrectly). Another example of how shoddy this piece is, is the hyperbolic statement about his wives: the first two, Hadley and Pauline, were actually older than him, and Martha and Mary were each 8-9 years younger than him -- not exactly robbing the cradle. Avoid this, for it is not only a waste of time, but full of misinformation.
