VW made a 2JZ RIVAL that's ROTTING in scrapyards...

- We are in Canada for the LZ World Tour this weekend and are checking out the local car scene. We got a message from Team Deafbonce and TSH Auto to come check out something very different! Audi and VW have a 2JZ rival that we never realized would be prefect for drifting! They have put their crazy ideas into the world's first SUV Porsche Cayenne drift car and Audi A5 pro car. What a first day in Canada for the Drift Games team...

People have been tuning VR6 engines for 20-30 years, they are a great compact platform that make reliable power. Mines a completely standard 1998 engine, basic build, GT3582 making 400hp
Help me swap one into my e36 so I can go slide!😁
yeah, VW headz have been sticking VR6's into EVERYTHING VAG have ever made since I was a teenager in the late 90's. Maybe they don't overlap with drift too much lol
i already hate this video and i havnt played it the price of all my vr6 stuff is going to skyrcket
If you have an E36 you can just turbo the engine you have….
@@foamdataservices never seen an Audi with an E36! But yeah, there's DOZENS of unpopular 4 and 6 banger engines that can pust 400-800hp without becoming terribly unreliable or expensive
It's nice to see people be creative with their drift builds, and build something that no one has before. Definitely nice to see a good variety!!
I agree. Some people just want to be as good at something as possible. Others like to take garbage and see how far they can push it with inferior components. To each their own.
VR6T's are so popular in Europe. Great engine with not much work needed to be done to get great power.
1000hp? it's not the 90s anymore. If you are making 400 hp, lol.
My brother in Christ who said 1000hp anywhere???@@eriklarson9137
@@eriklarson9137they’ve made 700hp unopened motor, ran 9’s stock motor etc 7+ years ago
@@eriklarson9137and Yes they can make 1000hp
@@eriklarson9137a 400hp mk1-3 vw is still faster than most shit on the road today.
Those bentley supersports seats are actually almost the same seat you'd find in a Bugatti Veyron, very cool
VAG after all 😅
Part of the reason a vr6 is so good with boost is because of the large distances between cylinders and it having 19 head studs making head gasket problems rare.
There's actually less distance between the cylinders compared to a typical in line at the bottom near the crank. This is due to the angle and the offset. This is also yvw never turbocharged this engine from the factory. I wouldn't call it great with Boost
@CSLFiero the space between cylinders is big enough there is a head bolt between them as compared to a inline motor having maybe 6-8mm between them. At the bottom doesn't matter as that is not the area with the highest cylinder pressure. That is always at the top of the bore.
@@epjetta all good points, but if we're looking at boosted versions of "VR" inlines, you basically get a litney of show ponies and the Bently w12 and bugatti w16. The VR6 out of a tuareg with a turbo isn't gonnna run a 24hr of leman
@CSLFiero I don't know about that. Just because it hasn't been done doesn't mean it can't be done. I know of a few mk3 vr6 cars that run 450-550hp and have been doing so daily driven for many years.
@CSLFiero they did, just not on the North American market. China got factory VRT in their Atlas equivalent. HPA is now selling them as 550hp crates with a bit of magic. The VR was originally designed planned as a 2.9L diesel, so they were plenty stout
I came across a turbo'd VR6 swapped 350z years ago, and it seemed like the perfect fit, it freed up space in the engine bay too.
That sounds cool, I love when people think out of the box.
where, i need toknow more lol
@@davislambert1605 I can’t post links here, but google VR6 350Z and I’m pretty sure the white one is the same dude I came across years ago.
Wow, oddball swap for sure. Must have blown the 3.5L.
They're not rotting in scrapyards, in Europe we swap them in absolutely everything, along with the 1.8T engine. :)
The BAM 1.8t is an awesome engine, I've had a Leon Cupra R and an Audi TT 225 Quattro with them in.
loads here in England.
The BAM is the best 1.8T. Can still find them cheap enough in the old TT. @@stilostan-the1st
I feel like I see more inline 5 cylinder turbo builds out of Europe than anything
Don't forget the 5 cylinder as well! 😉 Another great sounding engine with a lot of potential.
I owned a 1994 UrS4. Only turned on the radio on the highway when cruise engaged! 😊
I would have used the radio to drown out the whopping 200hp. But on the upside, your car only weighed 4000 pounds so...
@@eriklarson9137 Well at least it was more pleasant than hearing a 1994 civic with a hot air intake scavenging for air from the horrible harmonics induced from some cheap overpriced air intake with a crappy note from the ever so popular fart can to give a gut feeling of getting a 1/2 HP.
@eriklarson9137 you should look into the potential of the 3B and AAN. 5 cylinders sound amazing.

Yes, i love the Lamborghini V10 Sound of the Audi I5 engines
vw touareg vr6 prices after this video 📈📈
Love the VR6's, I have a still stock 3.6L Passat R36 AWD station wagon and even at ~300hp it's a hell of a blast to go from regular traffic to screaming along the backroads. There's certainly a lot of potential in these motors and I would love to see more of them in the drifting community. Not to mention they sound fantastic!
Vr6 is such a compact package too which makes it real easy to shove in things
shoved mine in my mk2 caddy van sleeper (drag build), along with a mk4 r32 awd system and a holset hx52 turbski!! vr swap the world dude!!
That's what she said.. 😏 (sorry couldn't resist..)
Ea888s are strong reliable engines, especially in the more modern revisions. Endless aftermarket and the fact VAG stuffed them in everything makes them a viable swap candidate.
reliable 😂😂😂😂
after u spend like another 8000 - 12000 usd on it
@@mj-lc9db i have a 2009 Passat with 150k miles on it and the cct engine. The only repair i made is the timing chain at 120k miles. 28 mpg average, fun to drive car.
IDK about strong and reliable, the engine in my A4 spun a rod bearing on my way to work and all the machine shops in toronto were backed up like crazy with work so i had to find a new engine. With parts, labor and a junkyard engine with unknown KM's it cost me 7k CAD to get my car back on the road lmfao. thats just my daily too

Wasnt expecting this video to be about a known tuner motor... people know what a vr6 is.
Here’s a few visual notes:

That A4 Avant is practically SEMA Show quality.
Did anyone see the “Audi” style LEDs on the Sub box? 😅😮
Also, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that these guys built a German Hoonicorn with that A5. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
That Cayenne is truly Sick AF too.
Great video guys. You are some lucky SOB’s to be given a wagon like that to drive around in. 😅😅
Thanks a lot
Fun fact, we've had a PRO driver in Romania running an Audi urQuatrro for maybe 12 years, he switched the 5 cyl to a similar 3.2 VR6T setup and it's been running great. Got a short clip chasing him on my channel if you want to check it out.
We also had a pro driver in Estonia drifting with an Audi UR Quattro. Uncountable Smiles per Gallon :D
And my nephew drove street with his Audi 80 B4 with a 4,2L V8 fitted :D
The black and gold one?
I think the VAG 1.8T should be on your radar. The straight-liners seem to rate (and push) them pretty hard on the continent.
"Use the momentum of the car, not the breaks".. The look on Josh's face, I 100% expected them to be doing a bit of grass trimming.
Check out Thomas Zurawski and what he is doing to the 1.8. Big numbers 500bhp and more.

They're not uncommon in Europe, locally there was a AWD MK2 Golf Rallye with a turbo VR6 engine, albeit the older one, but I can't remember if it's a 2.8 or 2.9, only local VR6 swapped car I can remember, besides the various Golf MK3 that came with them stock, or the VW Sharan that also came as a VR6, which I love that VW did, and in a car they had a cooperation with Ford on as well! so you could basically if you optioned for it all, get a Ford Galaxy with AWD and a 2.8 VR6 engine from factory, as well as the VW Sharan VR6 of course, but the Ford used mostly VW engines, so if you got the diesel? 1.9 TDI. :P
That's the late 90s models, like 96 or something, up to around 2005 or so, first gen Ford Galaxy (the EU minivan, not the big old US barge) and first gen VW Sharan (technically also sold as Seat Alhambra) so technically you could get a VW with a Ford engine too, as the 2.0i was the Ford one.
(I generally remember those cars due to dealerships locally were a pain, so if you had the VW Sharan/Seat Alhambra with the 2.0i and went to the VW dealership, they'd tell you to go to the Ford dealership with it, and if you had the 2.8i 24v, or 1.9 diesel Ford Galaxy and went to the Ford dealership, they'd tell you to go to the VW dealership, so customers were annoyed.)
And technically... there is a VR5 too, though only sold in Germany I believe, and sold as a V5, in late 90s early 2000s VW, in a 2.3 10v version with 150hp, and a 2.3 20v version with 170hp, so you could get a MK4 Golf V5 4Motion, so a AWD 5 cylinder Golf from factory, same with Passat, and... I never remember if it was Vento or Bora, as it swapped around that era, I do however remember being sad you didn't get a 4Motion version of the New Beetle 2.3 V5, as an AWD 5cyl New Beetle would have been a hilarious sleeper, but you only got those as FWD with the V5 engine, I've been wanting one for ages even with FWD, just the hilarity of a 5cyl New Beetle, and as it's a VW, you get plenty handling bits so it could be a fun AutoX or trackday fun car.
But that's enough of my ADHD tangents, sorry about that.
Great info mate!
2.5 vr5 was also available in the US. Mid 00's to mid teens.
@@pchitti241 the VR5 was only a 2.3 liter, as the VR means it's staggered, it basically has a V shape, but so shallow that it's only one head, but it basically has 3 cylinders on one side, and 2 on the other, making it more compact than the 2.5 you mentioned, which is just a normal I5 engine, not a VR5 (V is for well.. V like in a V6 or V8, R is what Germans use instead of I for Inline, it's R for Rekke I think, which translates to Inline, and as it's such a shallow V, it's basically something between a V and Inline, hence the name.)
@@VampyrMygg you got me there, I assumed it was the vr5 and never looked into it further. Thanks for the info
6 cylinders with one head, nice and compact which makes it a great transplant engine and of course very tunable
i love vr6 motors!, mines a 2.8 24v, just bought a new holset hx52 so im hoping for 800awhp 💪im stashing parts to do an r30 build next! in the vag world the vr6 is legendary, but unlike the 2jz, rb etc, it has a lot less aftermarket development, although still enough to build 1500 horse motors no problem, buts its still my favrioute of all!
Back in VWVortex hay day, there were dudes doing weekend VR6 swaps for about $3000 Canadian. Included everything. Drop car off, pick it up a few days later with a VR6 instead of the 2.0 8v or whatever you pulled. They would also keep / scrap your old motor as part of keeping costs down. It was the swap to do in the VW scene. 1.8t were such a small percent of swaps. People would even pull the very easy to make power 1.8t to swap in Vr6. I always dreamt of VR swapping my 1995 Golf Sport I had, but found similar power with less work through a Neuspeed supercharger on my fairly built 2.0 8v.
My friends wrapped the Audis, so cool to see their work in your videos.
To show the true potential my buddy has a junkyard vr6 he just hit 9.1s the VR6 is the ultimate underrated engine and that’s why I love them
I have a currently 1042hp VR6 but changing cams and haldex clutches, adding more boost and will see 1200hp….it’s a good engine!
Nice. What parts in it? What can stock bottom end handle? Where do you get the parts summit?
@@aaronmarkstaller all parts supplied and fitted by Bespoke Partz Ltd, i ran 562hp on this car with a completely stock engine apart from a head spacer…they came take some abuse.
@@aaronmarkstaller probably ~500 crank is upper limit of stock bottom end. 35xx Garrett and about 1-1.2 bar boost will get you there depending on setup
Most 3.2 vr6 were produced with cast cranks, so 2004 or earlier forged versions generally more desirable.
I love how happy this guy is to show off his work.
Thank you
I'm happy to see German cars getting more - well deserved - attention, lately. :) But trust me, the A4-, A5-models are only the tip of the iceberg. Just wait till you're able to import the really crazy ones like the 2008-2010 Audi RS6 with the v10 and biturbos, for example. :)

Been going to Cayuga Dragway ( TMSP ) since I was a little kid for drag racing. When the road track was put in I always thought it was a glorified go-kart track and didn't pay much attention to it. Thanks for enlightening me. They also run a really good no prep street outlaw drag series out of this facility at the opposite end of the NHRA dragstrip in the shutdown. Pro Tree Videos broadcasts and records most of the no prep events on youtube if your are really bored while you are here in Southern Ontario. Rickard Ivars here in sweden drifts a RS5, if i remember correct he took out his vr6 engine to a M50
In a lot of the RS models certainly the chassis dynamics aren’t great. Quite often the engine sits WAY forward infront of the turrets, which doesn’t help the chronic understeer issue you often get. I’m sure there’s ways around it with tuning and geometry but they’re often not a great base platform for this specific use.
