Regarding some rude criticism by some commenters here...I have always thought it was a sign of intelligence to "make do" with stuff that wasn't perfect and to repair only as necessary. Like Alan says, a temporary fix that works is a permanent fix. Even a temporary fix that only lasts a short time is worth refixing if it takes little effort. Rich kid farmers living on their ancestors hard work and luck would be shut down without their tax write off dealer repairs and bank owned new equipment. Mom and Pop and kids operations like Trinity Dairy are what made this country great. A good idea and cheap way to fix those stalls. To tie the cows up. Way more comfortable for the cows then stations. The more comfortable the cow. You'll get more milk from them without doing anything else.

Back in the 80s we took out the stanchions and did exactly what you did ,we also on some tied a chain between the two posts with a short chain to tie them up, both we thought were
Great video! You do a good job keeping the cows clean. I also think your barn looks very nice. My Grandpas barn were I'd like to start milking holds 25 cows but it needs alot of work, such as a new floor and beams replaced. Keep doing a great job!
Nice Video and Barn.. I like this system of Milking Cows.. I have also used a Bedding Chopper.. Can you make a video with the engine running explaning the mechanik to set the knife to rotate.. And after Maybe make a video of the engine running at idle... It fight a little like the Chopper i used.. Would your Engine Stay Running, or do it die after short time.. Nice if you can make a video from the low idle sounds, and let it stays running for a minute or 2.. Wishes and Hope it stays running at lowest possible idle.. It sounds so sweet.. Regards J.
I read the comments and you inspire me. I watch every video. Hope to meet you somehow one day. Can you show how you start it with the drill? I've never thought of doing that. Might be easier for my wife to start the tiller.

good showing, that is the type of cow tie stall that my uncles went with in the 80's with a barn expansion, easy to work with compared to the top latch type that they had from great grandpa's days.
I have used same chopper for newspaper as bedding. You can get the paper free, sometimes, and it chops just fine. Be warned: to much of some paper's, and cows only go to the left of the barn!🤣
How did the newspaper work? I tried it years ago and it didn't seem to work very well but I didn't have cow mats in. A few years ago I put in cow mats and am using sawdust but it's costing me almost 1,000 a month witch is insane
@@mhdairyfarm2911 it worked ok, you didn't want to do it on a windy day. I was in a 1970 free stall shed with 1 closed in wall, and the paper stayed put fairly well. The WIC chopper would blow the paper to the front quite well, and the cows would work it to the back. I dealt with a poor design, and concrete was the base. NOT designed for cow comfort, but the paper helped.

Alan, I always enjoy reading the comments until I got to that jerk Kevin Chestnut. I bet he was either a trust fund kid or is owned by the bank. Sure new is great but it comes at a high price these days. I applaud you on your decision not to be owned by the bank. We are in cotton country in the Texas panhandle. Every year we see bank forced sell outs because interest and principle payments get behind for two years. Bankers today don’t work with you like they did in my grandfather’s time. They don’t care if the price of your commodity tanks while input costs continue to rise. They want their money now. In 2017, my wife inherited her grandparents farm that had been in crop production since 1938. Her uncle farmed it on a 25/75 share. We got 25% of the crop income but we also paid 25% of the fertilizer, chemicals and all irrigation well repairs underground. He paid to maintain the irrigation pivot repairs above ground. With rising input costs and weak commodity prices we netted less than $5000 profit by 2021. That’s for the five years, not per year. When she first got the farm I said we are not going to borrow money from the bank. The farm has to pay for itself. By 2021, we pulled the plug on crop farming and started converting the place to grass and beef production. Banks are not your friend, keep doing what you are doing and rock on✊
I think running it straight across would keep her too far back because the Stall is pretty short. This seems to keep her in line with the cow next to her, which is in a stanchion.
@@trinitydairy makes sense. Always thought a Holstein should have a 6’ stall and I know a lot of old barns have shorter stalls. Thanks and keep at it. Great way of life.
I have to ask this, Your kind of lean on the Straw you put down for the Cows and you push it forward so just the front of the Cow has the comfort of the straw, Is that because of the Gutter system you have in the barn or are you just trying to save a little cash Because of the Expense of straw ? And I understand the money part if that is the case. I know on our farm we had Free stalls, 500 of them, and we always had plenty of straw . My one particular job was to bed those 500 free stalls. Was great on the old side of the barn, Just throw it down from above. the new part was a Pain. The old barn held about 150,000 bales of straw and when we built the new concrete barn the hay loft held around a Million bales of hay, we had an over head system in that barn, But we still had to stack it. Enjoyed the video, Thanks for sharing.
We push it forward to start with because the cows always push it back, this way, they push it under them instead of in the gutter. We can't bed super heavy because of the gutter grates, but more so because of our manure pump. If there's too much straw, it hangs up in there. Most of the cows tend to build up the bedding they get every day, making it pretty comfortable, but there are a few that manage to push it all back into the gutter every day. They do have rubber mats under them as well for more cushion.

Nice tip on how to replace a stantion. I'm having the same problem. How high above the curb are you putting the pipe? Thanks.
I'll measure it again and get back to you.
From the top of the curb to the bottom side of the pipe is 29 inches. That's for a Jersey, so it would probably need to be higher for a Holstein. Frudenthal manufacturing website had a Stall section, so I based it on their measurements and adjusted from there.
