SMT V was such an underrated game. Hopefully Vengeance will help it get its flowers.

People were disappointed that it wasn’t like Persona. Imagine, a game that isn’t persona not being persona. mindblown

I can't get enough of SMT V: Vengeance and I'm just now starting my 4th playthrough. As someone who has done multiple playthroughs, I'll share some advice for newcomers: While I can understand being excited to experience the new story in the Canon of Vengeance route, you can't experience all there is to experience in that route because some of the content is locked and won't be available until you complete the Canon of Creation on the True Neutral ending route first. Some of the new features advertised in the game like a new superboss, the ability to raise the level cap on your characters to 150, and the Godborn NG+ mode that raises the levels of all enemies to 150 will only become available if you play the Canon of Vengeance after getting that specific ending in the Canon of Creation.
Also, even if you don't want to fight the new superboss unique to the Canon of Vengeance, you should still do the quests leading up to that fight becoming available for story reasons. The character who gives you those quests reveals a lot of SMT V lore and even reveals one of the endings in the Canon of Creation to be story canon. Surprisingly, even though the True Neutral ending is required before being able to access this content, it isn't the ending that is revealed to be canon and that is the only hint I'll give. I won't say any more to avoid spoilers, I'm just giving you a heads up on this because you won't get the entire story unless you do these things. Also, you have to beat the new superboss to open up the option to raise the level cap on your characters and to unlock Godborn mode. However, there isn't a difficulty requirement so you can just turn the difficulty down to Safety to easily beat that boss if you aren't up for a difficult fight.
There are also a few things in the Canon of Vengeance that can impact what happens in the Canon of Creation, but it is more like small bonuses rather than something like not being able to access major content without playing that route first. For example, you can find an item in the Canon of Vengeance that you are told can only be used in another world, so if you do a NG+ after that and play the Canon of Creation, then that item gives you the option to fight a more difficult version of a boss associated with a sidequest unique to that Canon story route. You don't get any better items or abilities from fighting that version of the boss, the reward you get is a more challenging fight if that is what you're seeking.
So I hope these pointers help. If you follow my advice, then you can experience almost everything in each Canon route gameplay-wise while only having to play through each of them once. Also, unlike the Canon of Creation route where it is easy to see all of the endings fast because your ending route is decided by a late game choice and you can just save before it to experience the other endings, the ending route in the Canon of Vengeance is determined by your alignment, so carefully consider your dialogue and story choices (especially how you handle side quests that have multiple ways to complete them). You can check your alignment by going to the map of Tokyo and seeing how the player cursor moves. If it moves clockwise, then you are law-aligned, if it moves from side-to-side, then you are neutral-aligned, and if it moves counter-clockwise, then you are chaos-aligned.

True neutral being required for the new superboss is actual misinformation
you AT MINIMUM need to have 2 save files: 1 that contain the clear data of any canon of vengeance route and another SEPARATE save file from the same playthrough that has progress AFTER the 3rd from final boss AND before the final boss.
everything else you said is true

@@karishthangarajah4780 I apologize if I got anything wrong and thank you for clearing up any inaccuracies. 👍The way I did it was to first have a clear file for the Canon of Vengeance from which I did a NG+ and got the True Neutral ending in the Canon of Creation. I then did another NG+ from the Canon of Creation clear file for another Canon of Vengeance playthrough and on that one I was able to fight the new superboss, get the miracle that ups the level cap to 150, and unlock the Godborn mode after beating the new superboss and then finishing that playthrough.

Great review, I’m really enjoying the game. I didn’t play the original so I was surprised at the difficulty. It’s super fun though!

Great review! I haven't played a SMT game before but have played persona 3 and 4 and enjoyed those. Do you think this would be a good game for someone to jump into in the mainline series?

Yes I do! I know others have jumped in with 5 and loved it. Vengeance is just an all around better experience. If you end up enjoying it then I would say go and play the Nocturne remaster next. Vengeance might be my favorite SMT game now, there’s a lot to love here and for the most part it feels like a standalone experience story-wise.

@@slam-zany ok awesome! Glad to hear it. I was hoping it would have a slight discount during the steam summer sale but obviously it's a new release so that was unlikely.
