Yes, John ist not a pirate. He mentions previously that he has a "letter of marque" from the Dutch, which means he is a privateer. The big difference is that a pirate is an outlaw who attacks random ships and bases to steal for his own. A privateer may use the same methods but does it not (only) for himself but for the government he has the letter of marque from. So basically a privateer is a mercenary at sea who attacks only ships and bases he is legally authorized to from the government which hired him. In John's case only spanish and portuguese ones. He mentions also that he has served under the famous Sir Francis Drake who stopped the invasion of England by the spanish Armada in 1588. Drake not only was an admiral, before that he also was a privateer.
"Shogun" is fire thus far. One thing about the Ancient Japanese, they sure knew how to deal with colonizers/trespassers. Too bad Ancient Africa didn't have that same 'Mind-Set', hmmm.
In 1600, Edo(Tokyo) was a valley and marshland, with no place to build houses and a lack of drinking water. Toranaga (Ieyasu) built canals, reclaimed the sea, and constructed water and sewage systems.
Every episode gets better. Turinaga is very intelligent. He isn't religious so he can remove all emotions from everything he does, but he turns around and use emotions and hidden motivations to manipulate people around him. He has eyes and ears everywhere, and he always have the same expression, you never know what he's thinking. Ishido has some of the deadest eyes I've ever seen in my life.
Toranaga whenever he’s with Yabushige (who’s always sweating 😥😰 the whole time whenever he’s with him) “I know you betrayed me and I know you know that I know you betrayed me so tread lightly.”
Toranaga and Yabushige have the same dynamic with Heisenberg and Saul Goodman. One is an intimidating top dog who has omnipotent power and great luck. Another is a backstabbing trickster who has to suck up to the former to survive.
It's culturally appriate, if Mariko had a breakdown for her husband who is dying warriors death in service of his lord and clan from the enemy it would have dishonored the sacrifice and Marikos family name.
8:57 Japan is a country with one of the highest suicide rates on earth so, bad news for you, this seppuku culture is too ingrained and will never go away.
The clouds and the rain is their polite way of describing the moment of 0rgasm. 😉
I was already a fan of B.Avery’s from his reviews of WARRIOR. But I have to say I’m loving Ms. Currin’s comments and observations. Thank you two!

Always bringing cogent and entertaining analysis!!
42:37 Edo was an old name of Tokyo. So technically, Toranaga offered to build a church for the Portuguese in Tokyo.
In 1600, Edo(Tokyo) was a valley and marshland, with no place to build houses and a lack of drinking water. Toranaga (Ieyasu) built canals, reclaimed the sea, and constructed water and sewage systems.
It's a great show and you guys did a great review of it.
thanks for the recap guys!

No
Hi, there
8:57 Japan is a country with one of the highest suicide rates on earth so, bad news for you, this seppuku culture is too ingrained and will never go away.
Kim is way more perceptive than her co-host. She picks up on everything.
