  • My 3 year figure skating progress as an adult skater! I started skating when I was 18 with the slightly crazy dream of becoming a competitive figure skater.
I skated very little as a kid and was actually kicked out of my very first skate class for crying too much. It wasn't until I was 18 that I decided I wanted to try skating again. I grabbed an old pair of skates, went to a local park to try to teach myself how to skate. This unfortunately didn't last long and it wasn't until the winter before the pandemic that I started getting into skating again. I knew UA-cam skating tutorials could only get me so far, so in August of 2020 I officially joined a club and had my first private lesson.
I was under the impression skating stopped at 18. I had no idea there were adult only competitions for skaters ages 18-20, 21-99, and 28+ for ISU (international) competitions. They offer events for all levels of skaters! You can be a competitive skater with single jumps and two-foot spins! Originally I only wanted to compete in showcase events but after a few months of lessons I started to enjoy jumps and spins more than I thought I would. I learned all of my single jumps within the first year of taking private lessons. Started working on my skating skills (moves in the field) tests, working on a program for competitions, and eventually made skating a large part of my life. Since I've started I have gone to adult sectionals and nationals a few times. I finally landed my axel and have been working on double jumps. The end goal for competitive skating or just skating in general doesn't have to be the Olympics. My goal never has been and never will be focused on going to the Olympic games for figure skating. I enjoy sharing my skating journey on the internet to show others that competitive skating is for all levels, all ages, etc. It's never too late to skate!

This gave me hope! People said I was too old to start skating, and I'm only fourteen! Such an inspiration, I can't wait to start! Great job!!!

Thank you! It's absolutely never too late to start skating! Highly recommend checking out some clips for US Adult Nationals or ISU Adult competitions for even more inspiration. Watching adult skaters land singles, doubles, and even triples completely sold me on the idea that anything is possible.

@@journeybacktotheiceAnd I believe that people that start as an adult can achieve even the olympic level, obviously much older than the average, but figure skaters who started as kids retire around their 30’s, so if you continue I think it’s possible to match their level maybe in 20 years, plus, exercise is healthy for you even if you’re no professional at the sport, anyways, just dropping my thoughts lol
