This Peel session was only a couple of months before they did the Rock Against Racism gig at Victoria Park, where I saw them live for the first time. I then saw them again the following month, in May '78, at The Roundhouse. This evening I just discovered that gig was recorded and is available here on UA-cam! So I wrote the following in the comments section to that video...if anyone is interested. I can't believe it's 44 years ago now: "Wow! Just found this. I was actually this gig! I had just turned 15 years old. The friend I went with was still only 14. Over the next couple of years we went to many Punk gigs together but this was one of the very first. They were supported by the original incarnation of Adam and the Ants. They had quite a scary following (for a young kid anyway!) - The Ant Army. My friend and I were a long way from our South London homes and were shitting it! LOL. Then we had to get night buses all the way home - each of us on his own!" 😱
X-Ray Spex at the Roundhouse was my first proper gig, after going to the Victoria Park RAR gig before it, same as you. I was 14 and went on my own and yeah, it was a bit intimidating! I sat up at the back of the stepped seats, well away from the crazy people down the front. It was a seriously exciting experiance and before too long I was one of the people crashing around at the front. I saw X-Ray Spex again at the all seated Hammersmith Odeon later in the year and it wasn't nearly as fun being stuck well back from the stage.
" I wanna be instamatic I I wanna be a frozen pea I wanna be dehydrated In a consumer society" very sharp lyrics for a teenager in the mid 1970s Poly Was very clued in and very sussed thanks for sharing your unique talents with us.
Remember the first punk LP with sax was the Stooges' "Fun House" (1970)! Another good punk band with a sax: METRO YOUTH. Check out "brutalized" (UK 1982)....
Great band all around. Not much for female punk vocals, however, Polly sang and had a killer voice that was perfect for a great band that used brass perfectly (like the Saints, RFTC, Roxy Music...) Cool version of Identity, little slower...still prefer the guitar sound on the album. Great production... Thanks for uploading. Peel Sessions never disappoint
I wonder can you help? I am looking for a friend a Track or two from a John Peel Show where John Martyn played Back in January 1978, JP hosted John Martyn and he ran through two numbers: Small Hours and Big Muff....you might have it or not but would be interested if you can share it...Thanks
The heartrending melody of Identity …I love it

@@mroldnewbie yeah, I agree, great lyrics from a very astute 1970s teenager . Many decades ahead of her time.
London Lady fadeout at the end made it even more complete.
Raw version of Identity......Love it!
X ray spex are up there with the very best
Love X-ray Spex... Poly wrote some truly brilliant lyrics, as evidenced by this phenomenal performance!
Can`t believe we`ve lost POLY..x-ray spex was always on John Peel when i listened in early 80s..i was only 11but loved the music & the attitude!
Blistering energy. Such a great band. Poly was a trailblazer.
My God I love this band so much.
Polly and Peelie R.I.P., amazing.Peelie at the end of session mentioned 50 to 40 part of his festive 50 what a selection.👏🏻👏🏻 Sorry off topic all.
@Vibracobra23 thanks so much for putting all this energy in opening up the Peel archives!
You're very welcome Erwin. I'll put some more Eton Crop on sometime soon!
1978 God I feel old. ❤️ POLY ❤️
One of my favourites that's for sure!
Best ever version of Identity!
Saxophone in punk rock is still relevant. Thanks always for the uploads, VibraDaddy lol
*Edited words for the brainlets
Your comment makes absolutely no sense

@@l.salisbury1253 Sorry but for me the first were The Sonics in 1965!!!
But Funhouse is perhaps my favorite all time! !

Pretty solid saxophone punk rock.

PrPwnage Peel mentioned the session by Alternative TV. VibraCobra also posted the ATV Peel Session.
Epco-amei
Now check out Australia's AMYL & THE SNIFFERS. Imagine X-Ray Spex without the Sax and the Plasmatics without the chainsaw!
I checked Amyl out years ago, and they are SH!T compared with this band.
