..and they were just more than "foo..off"-band, so proffs, too. If you think Poly when at age of 18-19 it's unbelievable how talented woman she was back then.
Poly💔 was the top, an she's still nowadays, for me (71), and I'm not the only one. This I know. But now there's a lot of young/modern (even not too young) "activists" discovering what the feminism is and the mighty women power. 100% of them had never known about x ray spex existence.
X-Ray Spex were one of the tightest, loudest rocking bands to come out of London in the late 70s. I saw them twice and both times they smashed it. You just had to dance, they were that infectious. 🙄 "I wanna be a frozen pea" they just don't write lyrics like that today... R.I.P Poly, you little frozen pea.😇💋
When I first heard women vocals and saxophone, I was confused, but then came to love X-Ray Spex (and Penetration). Much better than all of the earlier crap female punk 'artists'. Poly Styrene is up there with S Sioux. Ground-breaking music.
Poly is SOOOOOO fucking FAB! Her approach to Punk was very different to every other bands on the scene. her's was fresh and fun and most of all colourful and truly Punk as she didn't follow any guidelines
I happened upon them at the Roxy in April of 77 -- and was stunned how good they were. Poly was wandering around afterwards and I said, "You're gonna go down well in the States. They've never seen anything like it," and she looked at me like I was insane.
I'm excited seeing these videos of early punk bands so let's continue. These films are of tremendous historical value, providing a visual compliment to a band's recorded catalog. And to see a band in action is priceless. X-Ray Spex are one of the very best of the 1977 British punk bands. They are fronted by one of the most unique singers in all of punk. Poly Styrene (Born Marianne Joan Elliot-Said) with her look, her braces and her voice is a presence you can not take your eyes off. Her voice has been described as "effervescently discordant" "powerful enough to drill holes through sheet metal" and "yowling witty lyrics with all the delicacy of a cat in heat." Their first single O Bondage! Up Yours!/ I Am a Cliche (September 1977) is a classic punk single and their debut album Germ Free Adolescents (November 1978) is a perfect picture of punk youth excitement in London 1977-78. Very few punk bands would have the courage to use a saxophone, but here it's abrasive touches add immeasurably to the music. There seems to be a wide range of opinions as to when this video was shot. My guess is the Hope & Anchor festival between November 22--December 15, 1977. This is part 1. Next up is part 2. This band is really something special and I know you will love them.
I answer all telemarketing calls with the delicacy of a cat in heat(as am homage to our girl) nowadays. My voice can't disinfect the Roxy toilet any more, but at least I can guy roar like the MGM lion,
when x ray spex came to cambridge in 1978 it was a riot when they played as a 15yrd old i was really taken in im glad i was able to capture them then i went to brixton and the later reunion at the roundhouse great gigs r,i,p polly
i recently watched a punk -retro band. i think punk will make a comeback in some for soon. the band was called the walloping donkeys from mold in north wales. highly recommended to any body who wants to see punk still alive..
Totally agree, but there have been those special bands since these great days. John Peel would make me sure i knew about that. Thanks for posting this sham64andahalf, brilliant
Just wonderful. Impossible to watch without a huge smile. Didn't realise at the time just how lucky we were to grow up with groups like this, Vice Squad etc. Wonder what they would have made of Poly had she come along 30 years later and crashed onto the set of Britain's Got Talent?
And to think that the day before this shoot, Dire Straits performed at this very venue, Hope & Anchor Islington. I'm hoping there will still be DS footage from 1977.
A true one-off: Poly was anything but your stereotypical punk, but by belting out intelligent & witty lyrics backed by some of the catchiest tunes of the day she nailed her claim to immortality. Besides introducing us to the joys of punk sax, the early lineup's notable for boasting not just one but two outstanding chanteuses, Poly and Lora on the aforementioned instrument: we really were spoiled. Fantastic stuff.
@TalkToTheBody That isn't Jordon. Its Siouxie on Poly's right. This clip was taken in 1976 not 78 as it says. You are right the Banshees formed in late 76. I have met Siouxie on many occasions, not as early as this video but in 1980 and beyond. I know of the Bromlet Contingent of course and know of Jordon. But its definatly Siouxie, maybe she was with the Banshees then but its definatly her.
Very sad that nothing is ever said about this punk band as being one of many that broke ground for the punk culture people in america probably have no idea who the X-ray-spex are and who Poly was? Poly is super to bad they did not cut more records she would have been a super star.
'Oh bondage, up yours' what a great title in 70s England full of pretentious rock prats writing about kings and queens. She sounds even better now than then.
@uglyshortandginger Awesome, some people are always in the right place at an awesome time.I just end up in convertibles when seagulls decide to relieve themselves.
ok. it's not soiuxsie soiux but a lookiliky. this early 78 or very late 77. lora logic played sax up till late 77 and played on the first single `oh bondage` realesed in78. punk fashion of `souisie` girl shows late 77,early 78 .like it says in the the blurb. just saying....
It was filmed 10th Dec 77 and aired 22nd Jan 78 on a show called "The London Weekend Show : Funny Punk". And I agree it's not Siouxsie although I can see why someone might think that as Sioux had a similar makeup style around that time.
Probably the most underrated punk band from the original '77 period.
As of 1977, they only had 5 songs.
@@richardperricone6909 A few more than that, I think (and it depends when in 1977) - but what songs they were.
What makes you believe they're underrated? Please explain.
I love them
Considering one album & done or something beside later, still we're here😁
Her voice always sends shivers down my spine every time. Same as Patti Smith. Sleep well Marion.
This little band were way ahead of their time. Just absolutely lovely stuff. RIP Poly.
..and they were just more than "foo..off"-band, so proffs, too. If you think Poly when at age of 18-19 it's unbelievable how talented woman she was back then.

RIP Polly, Catchy songs, Great vocals, Guitar sound, Punchy bass and drumming, The Specs were a top shelf band.

i tear literally just came to my when that girl kissed poly at the end of oh bondage. never will any band matter as much as xray spex!
I was there - but I can't see myself in the crowd.
Fantastic voice, fantastic lyrics, fantastic lady. Much missed

Only a true fan would Wright something like this! X-Ray Spex are the best!

More people love XRaySpex in the U.S. than you may think. They are true hard core original punk......
I saw the spex at the Greyhound in Croydon back in 78 one of the best punk bands of the time.
There will never be another Poly. Impossible to copy
R.I.P. Poly...gone, never forgotten
when x ray spex came to cambridge in 1978 it was a riot when they played as a 15yrd old i was really taken in im glad i was able to capture them then i went to brixton and the later reunion at the roundhouse great gigs r,i,p polly

Now everything is disco-duck rap. I miss punk.
Just to point out, maybe the programme was made in 1978 but that gig was from late 1976.
This is fantastic.
Is that Soo Catwoman at ~ 8:10?

This is fuckin' great!
seminal performance at 5:30 - essential
The birth of Alan Partridge.
Sounds like Janet Street Porter is narrating.
I came to think that his voice lacked power, I was wrong, he has a great voice.
1,2,3,4 - bind me tie me, chain me to the wall!
I wanna be in NW 3
In fact I'm in the video
'Oh bondage, up yours' what a great title in 70s England full of pretentious rock prats writing about kings and queens. She sounds even better now than then.
That is soooo not Siouxsie any daft get can see that XXX
Lots of birds dressed like that back then.
is that siouxsie sioux on stage during oh bondage up yours?
Beats the shit out of today's whiney indie music scene. The band, "Madness", played some of their earliest gigs at the Hope & Anchor.
