- Easy DIY Formula for the Best Potting Mix preparation for Home Gardening that helps Plants grow and produce more flowers and also the best seed starter mix. The Video is on the best All-purpose Potting mix for all your plants based on scientific concepts.
We will also make an Ideal Terrace Gardening light weight potting mixture and the best seed starting mix.
Let me start with the 3 P’s of Successful Gardening.
1. Planning your Garden
2. Potting Mix Preparation and
3. Planting
So, Today we will discuss on the second P of gardening, that’s Preparing the best potting Mix for your plants based on some useful scientific concepts. Please watch the video till the end. First we will discuss the Criteria for the best potting soil for your plants and then the formula or the recipe for the best all-purpose universal potting mixture for your gardening.
Well, You need to Understand this Point: Why cant I just dig up the ground and use this soil for my plants? This is because we have two major limitations of this:
1. Compaction or hardening of soil - mainly with clayey soil which can suffocate the roots.
2. Lack of Nutrients in the soil- that’s the Major NPK elements (Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium) and also the minor trace elements.
Hence, the need to prepare your own potting soil arises.
Hold on friends, some more important concepts to learn before I disclose my recipe. A few criteria you should be taking care while preparing your potting mix.
1. DRAINAGE: We all know, too much water can rot your plants. So a well draining soil that quickly drains out water within a particular duration of time is important for all plants. This is the most important criteria for growing succulents and based on this you adjust the proportions of stuff like sand, perlite and other stuff.
2. WATER RETAINING CAPACITY: This is quite opposite of the first factor. So we have to add materials in such a way that the water should neither drain out too quickly nor it should stagnate in the container.
3. NUTRIENTS: This is a very important criteria in container gardening. We have to add certain nutrients into the potting mix so that your plant can produce flowering or fruiting at right time and grows in a healthy manner.
Having said that, Now Lets Start making our Potting Mix with the best and easily available ingredients.
I am showing you two formulae: Please watch the video for these details.

Great video. Coco peat alters ph no matter how much you adjust the ph of your water/ feed solution. So some lime would help to keep the medium.close to a neutral ph wich is 7. This will make sure the beneficial bacteria can continue the symbiotic relationship with the roots. Great information as always. Thank you.

Sorry Dr Saab instead water I wrote matter it's ok no problem
My potted plants in ground are good but some plants shredded their leaves it's only a minor thing these pots I used Universal potting mix it's wet but no stagnation of water no loss in my garden iam Very Very happy I made Universal potting mix ,+, soil less mix +mix for Adeniums and sacculants cactus each. 50 to 100 kg no worry for me (Dr Saab irukkirar bhayamenna,) Regarding the sprays and fertilizers mine is only 3,point policy 1--once in a week
2--once in ,15 days
3---once In a month
Dr Saab this formula is doing wonders to me This too I learnt it from u
God bless you sir and ur family good night sir

Can i mix potting mix with peat moss within garden soil?
Nice information sir.
Wonderful explanation
Thanks so much!
Please clear the % is by volume or by weight. I have just collected perlite, vermiculite, verrmicompost, neem compost , sand. Just thinking by volume 50% cocopeat+ 10% river sand+ 10% vermicompost+ 5% compost + 5%cow dung compost+10% perlite+ 10% vermiculite .We can not use any NPK + micronutrients for rose in the potting mix?
Can you make the video on bow to grow saffron bulbs. Your many viewers must looking for the video.
Thanks.
Sir kindly share the details from where to buy perlite/vermiculite on cheap rates as they are quite costly from online stores.

can we grow indoor money plants in black earth top soil? without mixing with any other soil
Good video!
Thank you!
So the organic soil you buy from store does not contain enough nutrients?
This is so helpful. There are many things that are not available such as VAM, Bone Meal, Blood Meal etc. However, accidentally, I found Rock Phosphate and Dolomite in a small store and have no idea how to use them. Can I add Rock Phosphate and Dolomite to soil? Or can you tell at which stage I must add these to plant or soil? Appreciate your comments and advice. Thanks
Thanks. Adding RP once in 6 months sufficient or at early growth phases - detailed vid here ua-cam.com/video/cTzDlm3MCI4/v-deo.html
Many thanks for your reply.
very nice video. one Q : in the light weight mix without any garden soil but with cocopeat and compost, will the plants in container grow healthy ?
Thanks. Yes they will grow but plant anchorage is loose and might be problematic during heavy winds.
Highly informative video👏👏👏. Can you please clarify whether light-weight or seeding mix can be continued even after the plant has grown and started flowering or do we have to change to garden soil + other ingredients ?
Thanks. It depends on the type of plant. If it needs good anchorage, garden soil proportion is indispensable.
Why are my papaya leaves turning yellow? Is it because i sprinkled some potting mix around the plant and watered it?
@gardentips a quick question.. I have a soilless potting mix of ugaoo ...and a potting soil ... Can I mix two of these in 40-50 ratio to get same effect as universal mix along with 10 percent fertilizer ... I am just wondering if I should buy Coco peat or else use soilless potting mix rather
Hi. Most of the soil-less potting mixtures commercially available are 80% cocopeat. Just mix some 30% garden soil and some 20% compost to it. That should be fine.
@@GardenTips thank you sooooo much ....u r such a saviour
Nice video
Thank you Ram!
Can i use coconut oil cake powder?
In my no plant... water never comes out after watering... I add soil sand n compost.
Please guide
All purpose soil- any plant
40% garden soil, no stones
30% cocopeat
30% compost
5% bonemeal powder
5% Neemcake powder
Why does all of the different varieties of soil I am buying is hardening after I re-pot my plant's and water them?
I like your videos for helping my roses. I also like your soil mixture video. My trouble is I have the worse draining soil issue and roses were planted there without any ground soil prep. My roots rot and the soil smells terrible, like rot. I am trying to dig out some of the soil and want to replace with one of your recipes. I see you have a few different ones. For replanting the rose bushes what one of the recipes do you recommend. I think I should add sand because as I mentioned my ground does not drain well at all. so frustrating!
thanks. Coco peat, peat moss or perlite are better options than sand.
@@GardenTips doesn't the cocopeat hold water in?
renee wilson for roses they need well draining soil plus moisture retention but not compact soil for root development. You keep roses in max sunlight. 👍
@@GardenTips thanks for your help. I also have worm castings. Would that also be something to add in the ground to prevent disease on my roses? I am really hopeful to get my roses healthy again.
Also for roof top gardening the suggestion is for cocopeat 50%, compost 30%, perlite 20%. I've created my potting mix using cocopeat 30%, vermicompost 30% and perlite 30%. Also I've made nine holes of 6mm diameter. I'm not putting any stones or gravel at the pot's bottom. Still I'm seeing that the potting mix is holding a lot of water. If I squeeze the potting mix with my hand water starts dripping from it even after an hour. I think this is too much of water. Can this result in root rot ? What alterations can I do to make a well draining but water retaining potting mix ?
Instead you can reduce the frequency of watering.
👍👍👍
Ser ,,what kind of soil is that,,?
Any ulternate for perlite or vermiculite
Hi I stumbled upon your channel, I loved it. I am very fond of plants but mostly depended upon our mali ( Gardner) I think his knowledge is not up to date. After watching your channel I will try to give a new lease of life to my plants. I even bought lot of stuff from the nursery today to start a nutritional makeover of my plants. Will it be good to repot the plants in this season? Thanks a lot for your precice knowledge.
Thank you so much!
You can repot now before the start of winter. Or wait at the onset of spring. This video might be helpful- ua-cam.com/video/8QSJcJvEWCI/v-deo.html
Thank you so much. I spent two hours today , did repotting, planted winter flower saplings. I was shocked to notice that some of my pots had either no hole or the hole was not covered ! My mali is going to have it from me. Two of my gardenia had plastic cups around the roots ! Added diluted alum, Epsom salt , bone meal neem khali and vermi.compost as per your guidelines. Though I could not process coco peat ! It's a brick ! Nevertheless , I am happy with my new venture . Letting you know , afterall it is your hard work that has given me the enthusiasm and direction ⚘
@@SSsays29 soak the cocopeat brick in water it will disntegrate within a few hours
Beutifully narrated the potting mix.
Is it advisable to add gypsum for garden mix? Or it can be added for clay soil alone.
Thanks 🙏. I have discussed here ua-cam.com/video/zvzm7c1PGWc/v-deo.html
Thank you for your valuable comments.
I already came across the video for treating calcium deficiency.
Whether gypsum can be mixed while preparing potting mix rather the solution with water.
If so, how much quality is advisable for redsoil not clay nature.
😊
Sir I have plant rose in pot on Terrence should I use soil or just cocopeat and vermicompost is enough
Use a mixture as recommended in this video. Cocopeat alone is not enough.
What is rooftop gardening? Would that be in likes of apartment gardening or patio gardening?
Here ua-cam.com/video/dO1St6ypGoU/v-deo.html
Thanks for the video.can we use ready made soil which are available on online.
Yes from trusted source but they will be expensive if you have lots of plants.
If using 20% river sand, do I distribute the remaining 10% evenly to the other ingredients respective to their percentages? Or keep it simple and just put more soil in it?
Mixing everything well helps in better drainage.
Another mine of information. Thank you!
For the purpose of peat conservation, can we substitute coconut coir for cocopeat or peat moss?
Would possibly need another source of nutrients as well?
Regards,
Bob
Thanks. Yes absolutely coco coir is a good replacement.
@@GardenTips Thank you so much for your swift and helpful reply. I'll get some from Amazon...not too expensive either! :)
How I need a good drainage soil for indoor potted plant, I only have potting soil, perlite & compost. What percentage should I do?

Sir please advise if I can use Msand, as getting river sand is quite difficult
It’s construction sand
Which of the video's should I watch to learn about vermiculite and perlite ?

Very nice video , please can u make a video on neam cakes , mustard cakes , nut cakes & their uses .
👍 sure.
Sir , how long can we use this potting mixture for plants ? is it for few months or years ? can you specify ? After that do we need to completely change the entire gardening soil or add some nutrients etc to revitalize it? Please help me understand. I want to start a terrace garden with this mixture.
Explained here ua-cam.com/video/B9tNBCNyMPQ/v-deo.html
Thanks a lot. Very useful !
Can we use river sand (grey colour) which is found near construction site? If not, then what type of sand to use?
Also can rice husk be used instead of cocopeat?
Yes it’s same sand. They don’t use beach sand for construction.
Sir what can be substituted for neem cake powder & bone meal if those are not available on hand?
Bone meal substitute- Organic Rock Phosphate
Neem cake - pseudomonas or trichoderma or Mycorrhiza VAM powder- please watch these 2 vids:

5:05 can i mix potting mix with peat moss without garden soil ?
Yes depending on plants type. If a plant needs good anchorage garden soil is important.
Sir, I have a question can I use granite slab/tiles cut powder for potting soil mixture, is yes what quantity. Please please guide
Hi. 🤔 honestly I have no idea. I think you can use it like sand- 20% ratio.
@@GardenTips thank you, on trial basis will try with one pot
Terrace garden soil that u have shown in video it's only for seed germination ?? Or for plants growth also ???
For both, but for larger plants for anchoring you need to add garden soil.
@@GardenTips thanqqq
Dear Sir, thank you so much for the information about universal potting soil mix ingredients. I live in south kolkata where the soil is glue type, therefore i mix sand for well drainage and have enough room to spread roots. If i mix garden soil 20% along with sand 20%, cocopeat 20% , vermicompost 30%, 1 tsp bonemeal and handful neem cake powder, is it ok? Waiting for your reply. Your blind fan Parichay.
Anything is fine. The ideal well draining soil is one which after thorough watering drains after 30 to 60 seconds. Water out of drain holes. You can vary the proportions depending on the plant type - like for succulents increase sand to 50% whereas for trees that need good anchorage make garden soil to 50%.
@@GardenTips Thank you so much Sir
Sir can we use Used tea leave+egg shells in our potting mix?
Yes sure. There are videos on my channel. Check ua-cam.com/video/XTHXr_oNXRo/v-deo.html
can I use only vermicompost to germinate my seedlings? or should add some other thing?
Add 70 percent cocopeat and 30 percent vermicompost.
GARDEN TIPS thanks!
Very useful video. Sir does it work on any kind of Garden soil.
Yes any soil, but remove larger stuff like rocks etc. If Clayey soil, add 10 % sand additional.
GARDEN TIPS ok.. thanks a lot sir. Your information is very helpful for me.
My main challenge in growing seedlings is Fungus and small ants. They just kill the plant and its so disappointing. All my efforts go down the drain. So someone told me that my potting mix was not correct. I used red soil 60%, cocopeat 30%, 5% vermi and 5% neem cake powder. No sand. Within a few days ants and fungus would come and if the plant germinated, it would die in a few days. I have tried mixing Turmeric, cinnamon powder but it hasn't helped. Hopefully with good fine sand, I will have less fungus. I don't want to use chemical pesticides yet. It will be the last resort.
Include trichoderma in your seed starting mix as a biofungicide. Also sand or soil, you dry in hot sunlight before mixing. Also check this video ua-cam.com/video/eLACnABG2LM/v-deo.html
And do use neem oil
What is garden soil?
Ser this potting mix is also use in all kind of plants like rose bongabella snake plants and others and it can also use in anykind of vigitable like eggplant tomato carrots pechay radish cucumber and more I wait for your replay thank you so much and God bless
Yes it’s universal for all plants. For succulents you can add 30% sand.
Ser your soil is clay,,?
Hi...you have been suggesting to use Sand as a part of the potting mix..these days we get Msand..can that be used. Appreciate if you can guide us on this...thx
Use the conventional construction sand or river sand. Cocopeat is best option if you don’t have sand.
@@GardenTips thanks a ton. Appreciate your quick response
@@GardenTips can we make the perfect potting mix and have that stored for later use. Say overthe next 15 to 30 days. Is that recommend and if yes will that be effective? Regs..
Hi yes! This is my recipe ua-cam.com/video/0I_IIbVqeME/v-deo.html
You can make your own amendments based on plant type etc.
Hello sir is it important to mix sand for roses or is it optional. Thanks
If you donot have cocopeat, you can mix about 10 percent sand. Do not use fast draining soil for Rose's because they need water.
Hello sir, recently I started terrace gardening with 20 plants and they are growing fine.. I still wanted to grow more plants, so can I use soil less medium with cocopeat, vermicompost, cow manure, perlite,if yes will this be ok for leafy greens ?are there any drawbacks with this medium?
Hi. For leafy greens that’s fine but fit growing plants which require anchorage you need atleast 30 to 50% garden soil otherwise the plants won’t stand.
Please clarify -if i use, garden soil+ cocopeat+ vermicompost+ neem khali+ bone meal for all indoor and outdoor plants ...please correct if i am wrong.....reply ji
Yes 👍 you can use this for both indoor and outdoor plants. You can reduce garden soil to 25 to 30% for indoors.
@@GardenTips oh ...thanks much 😇 God Bless
Can I use filters coffee waste powder mix soil
Yes coffee or tea rich in tannic acid ua-cam.com/video/XTHXr_oNXRo/v-deo.html

Just the regular land soil in your place. It’s red soil in my place.
