THE REAL ROXANNE SHANTE

- Опубліковано 7 жов 2024
- “I started a career in hip hop that spanned over 35 years,” says rap legend Roxanne Shanté. “All because-clean underwear.” The Queensbridge native was just 14 years old when she recorded “Roxanne’s Revenge” for DJ Marley Marl on her way to the neighborhood laundromat. She finished her seven-minute freestyle just in time to get her laundry out of the dryer. The record would go on to become a massive hit, answering UTFO’s “Roxanne Roxanne” and setting off the legendary “Roxanne Wars"-even inspiring another artist to call herself "The Real Roxanne." But in this exclusive interview MASS APPEAL meets the real Roxanne Shanté, the woman whose extraordinary life and career inspired the film ‘Roxanne Roxanne’-produced by Pharrell Williams, Forest Whitaker, Nina Yang Bongiovi, and Mimi Valdés-which premieres on Netflix March 23. “I want every little girl somewhere to look at my story and feel it’s her story," says Shanté, Check out the interview right now and get ready to experience ‘Roxanne Roxanne.’

I really enjoyed the movie! Took me back in time.
I loved it
Facts.... I just love how Humble she is. Not a Diva Legend (Arthea Franklin) type attitude... She is so warm , and inviting .....🙏
She had me tearing up...her words went into my core cos I've been struggling with faith but her words went right into me as I really needed to hear them.
I love her.... she has a big heart and much respect on her taking the fall so most artist today can get there does in this game of takers
The Queen Latifah , MC lyte , salt and Pepa diss was extremely hard ... Roxanne murdered them
Well, Lauryn Hill is better on Hip Hop song too lol
Dam sho did. I don't know how I missed this one. The First Lady of Hip-Hop.

The Queen still looks AMAZING..... Congratulations on your movie. QueenLegend......
Respect to the OG Roxanne...HipHip Legend
To have come up in the era where Shante came outta nowhere I can really relate to her. However I don't agree with how rap has "evolved" I feel it was tampered with and purposely perverted and so we may never know what a true organic evolution would have given us by now. I stand by the credo of Wack is Wack and Dope is Dope that's any era any style any way of thinking, that being said there are a few dope cats today other than the ones people say all the time(Kendrick,J.Cole,etc.) and there were tons of wack m.c.'s back in the golden era(but at least their heart was in the right place unlike today's wack m.c.) we can't keep making excuses for the devolution of the culture however, solutions appear to be hard to come by... Roxanne was the mother of Kim Foxy and then Nikki and she deserves respect. Salt n Pepa had daughters too Latifah Lyte Monie Love were the "other" kind of female mc that didn't use sexiness as a marketing tool. End of the day tho, I wish Roxanne Shante all the success and accolades she has coming because she always kept it a buck on the mic...
CAPITALISM KILLS!!!

Influenced my taste in music from such an early age. First heard Roxanne played on the John Peel show in the UK, Peel being such a fan of her work. Anyway, wonderful, inspirational artist and I still go right back to the start to listen and remind myself just how good she is:)
Straight Facts Shante it's 2023 and your first record???? Its still being played amongst the many of us💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽🔥💯🔥💯, thank you for listening to your Mom and getting that laundry done! Much Love to you and Marley❤
Ha, I just watched the film, so great seeing her story after all these years.... Now I need a film on Kool Moe Dee ...
All I know is I had that same white sweater with the orange & pink back the day!! That was crazy to see The Bronx all day
I remember hearing roxanne, and other "underground" music on 1580 kday AM in LA..my brother and I took the city bus from Pasadena to LA to an underground record store that had all the coolest music that you couldn't find anywhere else, FM stations wouldn't even play rap back in the day!..anyhow crazy cool memories of tracking down the best music of that time, days of when we had ghetto blasters, break danced on the corner and made some change..music was everything to us! Great times!
I love the movie! Much respect to her💓
Hii
From EUR 🇪🇺 to USA 🇺🇸 the Real Roxanne Shante is the 1one1✌️🆒️✌️
Legend
As a young white New Jersey high school girl I came across UTFO & the Roxanne battle by chance - and I LOVED it and bought the albums. Soon after, I joined a strict religious group and got more into Christian music. Now that I'm in my early 50's and out of that group, I was exploring UA-cam and came across this (and other) Shante videos and am so happy to learn of your success. Your music brought me lots of joy. Now I have to see your movie! Best of everything to you!
I love her!
Awesome. All hail the original queen.
That Roxanne movie was good✨🙌
I'mma 92 baby so I never heard of her. I did like the Netflix movie Nia Long played one hell of a mother 🤗👏👏👏👏

I literally grew up when she came out. She was the best thing ever in '85. She was Ashley Banks before Ashley Banks existed. Long beautiful Hair with Mic skills and perseveance.
