It does fix it but it is bad for 90% of people since barely anyone has a 4k VRR Monior, even less a VRR capable TV and even lesser a 4k VRR TV. So all the average consumer (>90% of the market) will see is, the PS5 will look better on most 4k screens and the xBox games who depend on VRR look worse. Yeah... get a 450 bucks Series X and a 750 bucks tv to play it without screen tearing (aka, worse image quality) or get a 350 bucks PS5 that will do the same and to the averrage consumer look even better... so 1200 bucks vs 350 bucks... oh damn, what will the consumer do. Pick the more popular system that looks great on the stuff you own or the more expensive one that needs even more expensive stuff to look slightly better... what a difficult decission. Yes VRR TV's will be important ...next generation. The only big casual consumer products that are currently using it are the Series Systems and again only enthusiasts will buy a new TV for that or have a 4k capable VRR Monitor at home. Perhaps next time, consider the financial possibilites of ALL consumers, not just those who have loads of money, live in weahlty countries or waste all their money on their hobby.
I have a VRR tv (Q80T) and a series X. 120 fps is pretty smooth, I don't notice the swings in framerate with VRR and it definitely feels more smooth than 60 fps, though 60 fps is more than smooth enough. the 1440p, I can see a slight softening though in my display. So its more preference. Maybe the resolution diff would seem better if I had a smaller screen (I have a 65" and only sit like 7' away). VRR is definitely nice to have, as then you don't notice frame drops like if your display was fixed (I use my tv as a pc monitor too, once you go VRR/Gsync/freesync, you do not go back to fixed framerate, no matter how "locked" a game seems you notice every little stutter without it).
You don't need 120fps for a third person shooter. 120fps are mostly for fps. So, the best choice is 4k and 60fps for thus game. Clarity and 60fps without the need for VRR or a lower resolution.
@@kostasbousbouras2654 If my OLED was newer and had 120hz and VRR, I would be playing 120hz for sure. The difference between 1440p and 4k to me just doesn't matter much while an ultra buttery smooth framerate is always appreciated.

@@Buffinator1988 I wish games would add an unlocked frame rate mode for those of us with VRR. So you’d get “quality”, “performance” and “unlocked for VRR”. One can dream, perhaps when VRR TVs have been around for a few years and HDMI 2.1 is better adopted we will see such an option.
Two corrections: 1: The first mission is called 'Prologue: Find the Beacon' which takes place on 'Eden Prime', not 'New Eden'. 2: Those are 'Render-to-Texture' reflections on water/flat surfaces, in combination with screen-space reflections. This is probably why it's capped at 30fps because they use it quite a lot throughout the remaster (at least in Mass Effect 1 from what I've played of that so far).
To your second point, it uses a combination of SSR and render to texture. If you stand in water and pan the camera down, you can see some objects fade out as they become obscured by the camera while other objects have no change.

I'm a PC gamer who like MANY others has been trying to get a new GPU since the new GPU's from Nvidia and AMD were announced. Is the series X any easier to get? I thought the PS5 and Series X/S were just as hard to find. Thankfully my 1080 (non Ti) has been holding pretty well @ 1440p. It's starting to show its age with the most recent AAA releases but it's still more than playable. In the worst cases it's just a matter of dropping one or two settings from ultra to high. RE 8 for example ran great with everything maxed out except volumetric lighting dropped from ultra to high. It's amazing how screwed the GPU market is though. I recently saw my exact model 1080 (EVGA GTX 1080 SC) sell for a little over $600 on ebay. I'm almost positive when I bought mine when they were brand new it was $500. They are selling for more now than they did brand new lol.
XSX does seem to be taking the lead in performance. I have a ps5, though and still don't regret the decision. I think if I didn't have an Xbox One x it would be a different story but even with the slight performance gains over the PS5 I still don't get excited about it. There are just no exclusives worth buying for currently. I'll probably grab one eventually but just don't see the rush.
For the 120hz 50% segments, put playback speed to 2X if you have a 120hz display or device. Like the galaxy S20 or S21. UA-cam will play all 120 frames per second without dropping a frame!
Colossal work Thomas. Great video! I think that Series S resolution should be modified in a patch. 1440p/30fps for quality and 1080p/60fps for perfomance. Hopefully that would deliver no fps loss at each resolution and no tearing. Also, and I insist this should be on EVERY game out there on every console, there should be a fps unlock toggable option on every 30fps game, scratch that, on every game that has any fps lock, for future proofing and/or user choice. This way, newer consoles, or newer iterations of same console could improve perfomance. I still remember BioShock and Saints Row 2-3 on PS3-360 having that option and both now play at 60fps on Xbox Series X (all 360 games, not remasters). Anyway, ME Legendary Edition looks absolutely great, going to get it on SX. Thanks!
TBF comparisons between last gen games are irrelevant. The SX is so much better at playing previous generation games than the PS5. For a game series this big I'm honestly surprised they didn't do next gen versions to really optimise them. I don't think there'd be any flaws on either the SX or PS5 then. 12:30 is a problematic and stuttery location on many systems, has always been since the OG release of ME1 and I guess that is why it is featured in so many clips in this vid. It is an area that drops my fps from 100-144 to 60+ just when looking in that direction, no matter the resolution or other graphics settings on an RTX2070. The framerate makes the game shows its age a lot more obvious but the gameplay feels far more smooth and modern with 60fps.
I really miss how Mass Effect 1 made me feel. Nowadays people play it and don't understand, but it was actually the game that introduced the cinematic conversations that everyone uses now and nailed the whole space opera and exploration feel like none had done before or since. Hey guys, how about a video about old demos comparing with new games, what was achieved or not. UE 3 & 4 demos, Unity demos etc...
I was really hoping Bioware would finally fix the constraint they had regarding Saren's character model. Originally, the goal was to have Saren start out as a normal Turian and then slowly morph over the course of the game into the organic/synthetic hybrid we initially see. The Xbox 360 with it's RAM capacity couldn't accommodate that plan so they ended up just sticking with the one model, so they say. I was thinking that with the current hardware, even PS4/Xbox One could have made that a reality but I guess not, and you have to witness that scene of Saren with obvious Geth enhancements on him and the Citadel Council is like "there's no way this guy is evil"
I prefer saren straight up being sketchy and modified and nihilus and the council being in denial tbh. It's pretty fitting.

And VRR fixes both the drops below 120 on the Series X and screen tearing on Series S...
It does fix it but it is bad for 90% of people since barely anyone has a 4k VRR Monior, even less a VRR capable TV and even lesser a 4k VRR TV.
So the best chances without sacrificing too much is a Series S and a 1080p VRR Monitor.

HDMI 2.1 is a literal must to get the most out of the new consoles. Plus VRR has been on monitors for years. My wife plays on a 4K 60hz VRR monitor on her series s. @@V1CT1MIZED Well, lets ignore that 750 pounds is supposedly no luxury while it's roughly 1 to 3 monthly rents, depending on where you live, is a bold and somewhat arrogant statement. It's not just the 750 but the 450 bucks for a systems, so most don't have the money to get an additional TV. Especially if they, most likely, bought a 4k tv in the last two years.
What about the crack cocaine eyes?
It wasn’t even that bad in the original! Art direction and smart techniques go a long way.

I have the same TV and I can't perceive any drops at all either.
Makes me wonder - if Devs can't get that perfectly fixed 120fps they should probably add a little text disclaimer "recommended for use with VRR displays" or something.
Shepard is ready to bang through the galaxy again!

Another great comparison done by digital foundry!
Two corrections:
1: The first mission is called 'Prologue: Find the Beacon' which takes place on 'Eden Prime', not 'New Eden'.

Tom is also, in my opinion, the least technically knowledgeable of the group or at least that’s the impression he gives based on his videos and the way he words things in unscripted videos like the DF directs. The developers said they are using real-time render to texture reflections. Look into it yourself
@@brewski535 yes, if you can see objects in the reflection that aren’t in the camera’s view, it’s not SSR
More DF vidoes I watch.... more glad I become that I got Series X... Especially no GPU in sight for foreseeable future!! ☺️👍 Best alternative for PCMR!! 💻🖱️
MLB the show is the only one the series X didn't perform better than in terms of the PlayStation 5 this year.
@@jayevans20 MLB probably forced one of the devs to port it overnight at gunpoint. With that, the port is pretty good considering.
@@sean8102 both consoles sell out immediately.
I have a Series X and it's been great
Very much glad to be playing my favourite trilogy on Series X. It looks so slick and crisp...
I asked for this and you gave. So happy im crying.
For the 120hz 50% segments, put playback speed to 2X if you have a 120hz display or device. Like the galaxy S20 or S21. UA-cam will play all 120 frames per second without dropping a frame!
I have the s20 ultra but can't see 120fps mode
@@pizzagateisreal under display options. Set motion rate to smooth
UA-cam only show vídeos at 60 fps
@@Sda1011 it shows videos at the display refresh rate. It's called the UA-cam 120fps half rate video trick
i figure that you arent showing ps5 loading cause its about 10 seconds longer than series x ?
What's the point? We all know the ssd in the ps5 is at least twice as fast. But that doesn't mean every developer will use it regardless
Data from elanalistadebits:
Main menu loading screens:
PS5 14.63
XS 3.90

PS5 3.43
XSX 1.33

Thanks!
Look beautiful. Thanks for covering it. My wife is playing it on a Pro I am going to play it on PS5. Both of us in Quality Mode.
I'm commander Shepard and this is my favorite video on UA-cam
What about the loading times comparison????
why? They state in the video a few minutes in that they "barely last a few seconds".
TBF comparisons between last gen games are irrelevant. The SX is so much better at playing previous generation games than the PS5. For a game series this big I'm honestly surprised they didn't do next gen versions to really optimise them. I don't think there'd be any flaws on either the SX or PS5 then. PS5 cannot use it's next gen features on back compat game like the SX can. Really hope Sony figure back compat out eventually but it's not a must have for me, just a very nice to have
@@webhead4414 series x isn't using any next gen features either. It's just the excellence of Xbox and it's engineers, especially the backcompat team.
@@webhead4414 Neither XSX nor PS5 use any nextgen features. It's just BC and we all know that on XSX BC is better, more mature than Sony's.

DF, you neglected to mention the completely missing film grain effect.
Why would you want that looks awful on games
@@sean7332 Film Grain adds a lot to the presentation if it's used properly. And Mass Effect was a very good example of it!
@@agentsmith6161 Agreed, I liked the effect on the general atmosphere as well as the texture and complexity it gives the otherwise simplistic textures in the trilogy.
First thing I always turn off on the PC versions…
Film grain along with motion blur is terrible. No idea why they ever include it
At 7:07 you say shadow quality is boosted but you can clearly see far more detailed shadows from the leaves on the trees in 360 version
Do you see shadows like that in real life?
Why do you hide loading times ?
They don't, they said it takes a few seconds.
Because they're the same and only a couple seconds. Take off your tinfoil hat..
@@nickmotsarsky4382 they showed loading on Resident Evil 8 with like a 5 second difference. 🤷♂️ so why not show it here when XSX/S loads like 10 seconds faster.
@@rookiemonster1704 Where do you see it loading 10 seconds faster on the Xbox ?
Other channels have shown it loading 10 seconds faster on Xbox Series X
This game is on PS Plus for December 🔥
I really hope ME3 multiplayer makes a return via an update.
ME3 had the strongest combat/gunplay of the entire trilogy and the 4-player PvE element complimented it immensely and kept me playing ME3 years post-launch
Was hoping for PC port coverage first. Still love this content!
The instant loading times are the best improvement, you got to be a speed reader for the tips lol
I'm about 14h in ME1 and loving it so far, I love collections
Looking forward to playing these. I've totally slept on this series until now and it looks great!
mad lad, this is the best series ever. i envy you getting to play this for the first time......do not rush this game. enjoy every second and do every side mission
No clue when I'll be able to get a series X but once I do I'll be glad I'm planning on it vs the other options. 1440/120 sounds great
It's excellent, I'm really enjoying it but you do need VRR in the 120 mode.
Don't pay more for less.
My tv can do 1440p and 120 and has Freesync.
I got lucky today and found it at Target. 6am on a sat. morning they put a few series X's on Target. On my tv, I can't seem to get 120fps plus HDR to work. If I disable HDR, the 120 mode works, and if I leave HDR on, it automatically runs in 4k/60 mode. Not sure if it's a limitation of my TV or limitation of the game in general.
The main improvement is by far the loading times, it'll be much easier to enjoy and play the game not having to wait a minute when warping to another system and riding that elevator
Awesome, thanks so much for doing all this analysis, totally understood (and expected!) that you could only test a small portion of each--especially with the huge matrix of platforms, modes, and games within the package. Really glad to see they modernized these well, and I'll probably play through everything on my XSX once it's available on Xbox Game Pass.
Excellent work all 'round as always!
Would be awesome if Bioware dropped a truer next gen patch for PS5 and XS consoles. Getting support for dualsense, smaller install sizes and faster loading times would be a bliss.
It’s a Xbox one game and ps4 game at heart but the load times are insanely fast on the series X, like 1 second on mass effect 2
