I have 2 dulcimers - both with scroll heads. I've changed strings several times, but I'm always trying to figure out the best way to route the strings around the tuners. This was very helpful! Thanks!
Your explanations are so straightforward and make sense. You rock! 😎
Thank you Karen!
Did it. All by myself. Went great. Thank you!
Fantastic!
Thank you for this!
Glad it was helpful!
I did it! Not without a few expletives, and I got a little confused about the direction of winding...and I was wondering why my bass string felt so loose, until I realized it was an octave below. Anyway...seems to be holding together and sounds good! Thank you!
It will get quicker and easier each time you do it.
Hey Guidelines /my name is Dennis Fain I am a musician to just like you, although I play regular guitars, and a dobro what I would like to know how to get a hold of a gossamer like yours or a dulcimer which ever please give a prescription below of this video and where I can locate or who’s the maker of the doors first, so I can get a mountainstyle dulcimer order to play as well. Also, I can play the harmonica and their auto harp. This will be an extra fun instrument to play as well Dennis.
Very usefull thank You! I just bought one of these, it's my first contact with the instrument and didnt know where to start. ☀️🙏
Great!
What is easier to change strings, scroll or flathead ? ❤
flathead’s
Nice step by step tutorial. I will only add that when we string them up at the shoppe we string them "closest string", "bass string", "second melody or double string", then "center string". With the configuration you do not need to thread any of the strings under the other tuners. They will still lay nicely in the nut when above the tuners. Just two cents but your way certainly works too...

Thanks!
You have answered my questions and more. Thank you!
Glad to help!
I am a Newbie. I recently purchased a used dulcimer that was made from a kit. The top is spruce and the bottom and sides are oak. The surface of the wood appears to have a bit of shine as if it were possibly finished at one time but it was definitely not lacquered. It feels very dry. It has been neglected and I was able to get it for a very low price. It is clear that the entire instrument needs to be cleaned and conditioned as well as new strings. I wondered if the F One oil would work only on just the frets or if there is something I need to get for the rest of the instrument. I don’t want to damage it before I get a chance to learn to play it. BTW, I live in Colorado and today our humidity was 19. Once I get the hang of it, I’ll upgrade the dulcimer but I want to make the most of this one for now. Thank you for your guidance.
That will work on the entire instrument.
Thank you very much! Great work!
Thank you Walter!
No problem. Also thank you for your prayers a while back. My prayers were answered but not in the way I expected.
Well I’m happy to anytime Walter. Funny how that works, it’s never quite how we expect. Blessings
Will normal Guitar strings work on a 3 string Mountain Dulcimer? If not are there collard strings for the Mountain Dulcimer?
Yes normal guitar strings will work. Just use gauges that are not too high. Regular is - .10-.12 for melody string, .13-.14 for middle, .20-.24 for bass.
Hi Mandy. You are such an inspiration! I watch all of your teaching and music videos and am learning a lot. I just arranged to have an hour glass dulcimer made for me and will recieve it in a month. I can't wait. I will be watching teaching videos to learn how to play it.
Thank you for all of your help.
Ps. I am a Christian too and like how you share the Word and minister through your videos.
Thank you, God bless you!
Thank you! I just changed the strings on my dulcimer from the 1980s handed down to me by my dad. Woooh! Not that hard.
Where did you buy your dulcimer? Do you have any recommendations on what to look for or avoid?
Yes I do, watch this video first - ua-cam.com/video/P8uuR4e2OfY/v-deo.html
I caused myself wrist pain and tendinitis in my wrist from using too long of a vsl. I use a 25” from Folkcraft. I have affiliate links to Folkcraft in the description. The smallest McSpadden is a 26” unless you go ginger and that’s way too small for me. If you’d like a consultation to talk and discuss all the pro’s and con’s of a particular type of dulcimer I’m available for that. You can do that at my website if you are interested - called a Tune-up.
Why do you bring the string under the pegs fo the middle string? The scrolled pegbox is just like a fiddles pegbox, and fiddlers take all the strings over the frets. It doesn't make sense to me sorry.
When i restring my dulcimer and fiddle i bring the string over the pegs. It may be because my first instrument was the classical guitar where the strings are strung over the pegs instead of some over and some under.
Just the way I do it, sorry.
@@BanjoLemonade thank you for the response. You have nothing to be sorry for. I just didn't know if there were a reason other than preference that you did it that way. I apologize if i came off aggressive, condescending, or confrontational. That was not my intention. Im autistic and sometimes the way i say things comes off differently than i intend.
I really do appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us here on you tube.
i dont have any oil for cleaning my dulcimer what can i use other than a clean rag with water to clean
Don’t use much water. If you have furniture polish that would work. mainly just wipe it down with a dry cloth.
thanks mandy
I'm going to change the strings on my new (secondhand) dulcimer soon, but it has a moveable bridge. Does anyone have tips on how to put it back in the correct place?
Go ahead and change your strings, put the bridge back in, then put it where you think it goes. Then tune it up. DAA or DAD. Once tuned, you should get the same note at the 7th fret - DAA or DAD respectively. If a note is SHARP - move it back away from the fretboard some, if a note is FLAT - move it closer to the fretboard. Adjust until you get it right.
@@BanjoLemonade Awesome! Thank you!
Good work! What song were you playing at the end?
Thanks Rick! Boil Them Cabbage
What kind of oil for cleaning the duclimer
Fretboard cleaner-amzn.to/2N6QJY3. this is what I use
I just started to try and how to play again after many years of collecting dust I just feel the dulcimer needs a good cleaning. Do you recommend using fret board cleaner oil on whole instrument?
As long as it’s 100% natural oils yes, wipe away excess.
100% tung oil is nice if you don't want to fool around with solvents. You can get it on Ebay or Amazon. Watco or Minwax "tung oil finish" is mixed with solvents and will stink and take time to dry. It does depend on what condition your surface is in before you choose a product.
Do you recommend me removing one of my melody strings?
yes I do
Hey there, nice tutorial. I have a 4-string dulcimer just like yours that someone gave to me years ago and I'm trying to figure out which string for which peg and which winds under and which over. I play guitar so with that it always tightens counterclockwise, and strings hang over the barrel of the tuning machine. The dulcimer strings on the right tighten counterclockwise, and on the left tighten clockwise. The string farthest right is the thickest--not sure if that's correct....
Getting REAL TIRED of these stupid ASPEN DENTAL commercials on every
U tube video Is business really that bad ASPEN ?
haha sorry I have no control over what plays.
