    I have a mare who was a hunter jumper in the past, but she got injured so she couldnt be jumped for awhile. This is her first year back from maybe 7 years off of jumping, but she keeps refusing this one specific jump, its pink and blue but she will jump any other jump, so would poles/cavaleties help with that? She also cant jump more than two feet, but my old trainer would whip her if she refused, so now shes scared of jumps and whips

    Do you have any videos on what to do when your horse starts bucking at the lope when you ask them to move out/when squeeze them with your legs? I had been working on collection/shifting her weight to her hind end and she was getting pissy doing that and then the next ride she started the bucking thing. As soon as she feels any rein pressure or leg pressure she's started to lock up and not want to go forward. I know I created the problem and I'm just trying to get her to go forward now.

    Another thing that may help this horse is a professional equine dentist, I noticed he is doing lots of chewing on the snaffle bit. I always get their teeth addressed before I introduce a bit to them. I hope that helps you and you are doing a great job, keep up the good work.👍

    • @zacharias.horsemanship
      @zacharias.horsemanship 15 днів тому

      That's always a wise thing to consider! When I start a colt that likes to play with the bit, I usually give them a few weeks to see if the chewing subsides on its own as the horse grows comfortable with the snaffle. If it doesn't get better, or the horse is showing other averse reactions, I'll then take them to see the dentist. Thanks for the input!

    I think he also over thinks about the backing up from the step, when he’s back feet are on the ground he knows where the step is so he doesn’t mind it too much but once he’s fully in, he doesn’t know. He would benefit from simply backing up from any raised surface to learn that there isn’t a magical bottomless pit that forms behind him when he steps up 😂

    • @zacharias.horsemanship
      @zacharias.horsemanship 13 днів тому

      This is so true for many horses. We have a large raised bridge that we frequently do this exercise on before moving to the trailer loading. However, it wasn't done with this horse. Thanks for the comment 👍

    How do handle a horse that sulls up when you add leg pressure to lift the back?

    • @zacharias.horsemanship
      @zacharias.horsemanship 14 днів тому

      Fix the forward motion, then go back to collection. Every time you squeeze, and they slow down, firmly ask them to surge forward, whether it's with bumping/kicking or spanking them with the rein. Be sure you get a very clear response from the horse every time. Once you've established that slowing down isn't an option, you can go back to working on lifting the back. On the flip side, (and this is very important), you *must* do this in moderation so that your horse doesn't become scared of the leg and end up with the opposite problem of running through the bit when you squeeze. It's vital that you don't treat this as a punishment and create anxiety within your horse. You're simply balancing out the energy so your horse can perform the task at hand. Hope that helps! 👍

    • @charlotte893
      @charlotte893 13 днів тому

      @zacharias.horsemanship thank you so much for replying! That is so nice of you! In the walk she doesn't do it as much. It is more of an issue in the trot. She would speed up in certain areas of the arena (not necessarily towards the gate). She tends to get worried, so the longer I let her trot without asking her to do anything, the more she tries to anticipate what might be coming. She is also really sensitive to the leg. I have been doing the collection exercise you explained (squeezing the legs) and it is getting better.

    soo i’ve tried this technique, what would you do for a horse that when u put any pressure he rears. he freaks over any time of pressure from behind. he knows his ground work but his loading issues are the biggest issue

    • @zacharias.horsemanship
      @zacharias.horsemanship 13 днів тому

      Go to a contained space such as a round pen. Start with less pressure. Teach the horse to *always* move forward off of pressure, without punishing him or losing patience. Then add small obstacles to build their confidence. Once the horse knows: 1. How to always answer yes to pressure, 2. Trusts you to take care of them. 3. Has confidence in less difficult settings... You can attempt trailer loading again. Until all those other things are 100%, if you continue to ask your horse to do things you know they'll say no to, you're essentially starting fights you can't win, and your horse's confidence in you and himself will only continue to deteriorate. Please know, this is not a criticism of you. We've all been in your shoes at some point. Hope this helps!

    Thank you! This is very helpful! I do have a question; how do you tell when the horse lifts its back? My mare tries to go behind the vertical and I have been working on that. She’s doing better, but I still don’t know if she’s actually lifting her back and shifting her weight to the hind. Are you able to really feel them lift, or is it something really small you have to learn to notice?

    • @zacharias.horsemanship
      @zacharias.horsemanship Місяць тому

      Yes, you can, but as you said, it's really a small change and you do have to learn to know how it feels. When I'm attempting to help a rider feel the back rise during collection, I have them do it at a standstill because it's more obvious when there are fewer moving parts. This is for the rider only. I don't spend a lot of time standing still and asking my horse to lift his back in the collection process. I really should make a video to answer your question because it's a little more complicated than I can outline in a comment. Thank you for watching and let me know if there's anything else I can clarify for you!
